Chapter 6: The Secret Buried Beneath Sofia's Birth Certificate

I looked at Rachel.

She looked at the phone.

Neither of us spoke.

Detective Harris noticed immediately.

“What is it?””

I handed him the phone.

He read the message, then glanced between us.

“Who is Rachel?””

“My sister.””

Harris looked at her.

“Do you know what this message means?””

Rachel shook her head too quickly.

“No.””

I stared at her.

“Rachel.””

She looked at me.

“Marcus, I don't know what Elena is talking about.””

“Then why do you look terrified?””

She stepped backward.

“I think she's confused. She's been through something terrible.””

I held up the phone.

“She specifically told me to ask you about the night Sofia was born.””

Rachel pressed her lips together.

Detective Harris moved closer.

“Ma'am, did you know Elena was planning to contact your brother?””

“No.””

“Did you know she was alive?””

Rachel didn't answer.

That silence was enough.

I felt something twist inside my chest.

“Rachel?””

She started crying.

“I was trying to protect you.””

I shook my head.

“From what?””

She looked toward the stairs.

“Not here.””

“I'm done with secrets.””

“Marcus, please.””

“No. You don't get to ask me for patience after eleven months of lies.””

Detective Harris raised a hand.

“Let's sit down. Everyone needs to remain calm.””

Rachel slowly lowered herself onto the sofa.

I stayed standing.

“Tell me what happened the night Sofia was born.””

Rachel wiped her eyes.

“You remember Elena went into labor early?””

“Yes.””

“She called me because you were driving back from a job site.””

I remembered.

I had been nearly two hours away when the hospital called.

Traffic had been terrible, and Rachel had gone with Elena.

“When I arrived,” I said, “you told me everything was fine.””

Rachel nodded.

“It was.””

“Then what's the secret?””

She stared at her hands.

“Elena had complications.””

I frowned.

“What complications?””

“She lost consciousness shortly after Sofia was delivered.””

My stomach tightened.

“Nobody told me that.””

“They did eventually stabilize her.””

“Why are you telling me this now?””

Rachel took a shaky breath.

“Because Sofia wasn't the only baby delivered in that room that night.””

The words made no sense.

I stared at her.

“What?””

Rachel looked at Detective Harris.

Then back at me.

“There was another woman in labor. Her name was Claire Bennett.””

I had never heard that name.

“What does she have to do with my daughter?””

Rachel's voice cracked.

“Claire's baby died shortly after birth.””

I felt the room grow cold.

“I'm sorry, but I don't understand.””

“Elena was unconscious. Sofia had been taken to the nursery. There was confusion with the identification bracelets.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

Rachel began crying harder.

“Marcus, listen.””

“No. You're telling me the hospital mixed up babies?””

“Not exactly.””

“What does that mean?””

Rachel looked at me.

“Claire believed her daughter was dead. But Elena later discovered something in the medical records.””

Detective Harris leaned forward.

“What did she discover?””

Rachel whispered, “The baby who died wasn't Claire's.””

Nobody moved.

I looked at Rachel.

Then at the staircase.

Then back at her.

“Are you saying Sofia isn't Elena's daughter?””

Rachel nodded.

I felt the room tilt.

“No.””

“Marcus—”

“No!””

I stepped away from her.

“Sofia is my daughter.””

Rachel covered her mouth.

“I know you love her.””

“She's my daughter!””

“I know!””

Detective Harris intervened.

“Let's establish the facts before anyone jumps to conclusions. Rachel, are you saying there was an intentional infant identity switch?””

Rachel nodded.

“I don't know who arranged it. But Elena found documents suggesting Sofia had been registered under the wrong identity.””

I could barely hear her.

For seven years, I had watched my daughter grow.

I had held her when she took her first steps.

I had taught her to ride a bicycle.

I had stayed beside her through fevers and nightmares.

Nothing about those memories changed.

Nothing.

But suddenly, the people around me had turned my daughter's entire history into a question.

“Why didn't you tell me?”” I asked.

Rachel lowered her head.

“Elena asked me not to.””

“Why?””

“She said she needed time to find out who was responsible.””

“Who knew?””

Rachel hesitated.

“Vanessa.””

I stared at her.

“Vanessa knew?””

Rachel nodded.

“She was working at the hospital during that period. Not as a nurse. She handled administrative records.””

The pieces began connecting.

Vanessa had access to the hospital paperwork.

She had known about Elena's investigation.

She had stolen money from my company.

She had brought Daniel Mercer into our house.

And somehow, she had been involved in whatever happened to the babies.

Detective Harris stood.

“Rachel, I need you to tell me everything you know. Names, dates, documents, all of it.””

Rachel reached into her handbag.

“I kept something.””

She removed a sealed envelope.

The edges were worn, and the flap had been opened and resealed several times.

“Elena gave this to me before she disappeared.””

I took it.

“Why didn't you give it to the police?””

Rachel looked down.

“Because she told me not to trust anyone until I understood what was happening.””

I opened the envelope.

Inside were photocopies of hospital records, a birth certificate, and a small photograph.

The photograph showed two newborn babies lying side by side in hospital bassinets.

One wore a pink identification bracelet.

The other wore a blue one.

On the back, Elena had written:

One of these children is Marcus's daughter. The other is the reason they will never leave us alone.

I turned to the documents.

The first birth record listed Sofia Cole as the child of Marcus and Elena Cole.

The second listed a baby girl named Lily Bennett.

But there was something strange.

Both records carried the same identification number.

I handed them to Detective Harris.

He examined the pages.

“Where did these come from?””

Rachel answered quietly.

“Elena copied them from the hospital archive.””

Harris studied the dates.

Then he pulled out his phone.

“I need to verify something.””

He stepped into the hallway.

I sat down slowly.

Rachel reached for my hand.

I pulled away.

“Did you know before today?””

She shook her head.

“I knew something was wrong. I didn't know what Elena had found.””

“That's not an answer.””

Rachel started crying again.

“I saw Vanessa leaving the hospital records office the morning after Sofia was born.””

I looked at her.

“You saw her?””

“Yes.””

“And you said nothing?””

“Elena asked me to wait.””

I stood.

“Everyone keeps telling me they were protecting me. Nobody seems to understand that all those secrets left my daughter alone with a woman who terrified her.””

Rachel lowered her head.

“I know.””

A few minutes later, Detective Harris returned.

He looked more serious than before.

“Mr. Cole, I've spoken with the hospital's current administration. They're checking archived records and contacting the original medical staff.””

“Can you tell me whether Sofia is my biological daughter?””

“Not yet.””

“What about Elena?””

“We're arranging to have her speak with us in a secure location.””

I looked down at the photograph.

Two newborn babies.

Two identical hospital bracelets.

Two families whose lives had been changed without their knowledge.

Then my phone vibrated again.

Another message from Elena.

This time, there was an attachment.

A scanned document.

I opened it.

It was a DNA test report.

At the top were three names.

Marcus Cole.

Elena Cole.

Lily Bennett.

My eyes moved to the final paragraph.

The results indicated that I was not the biological father of Sofia.

But the next line was even worse.

It identified another man as the biological father.

Daniel Mercer.

I read the name again.

The same man who had been watching my house.

The same man who had entered my home on the night Elena disappeared.

The same man whose photograph had been found in a storage unit containing pictures of my daughter.

I looked at Detective Harris.

“There's something else.””

He took the phone.

His face changed as he read.

Then he looked at Rachel.

“Does Vanessa know about this result?””

Rachel nodded slowly.

“She found out before Elena did.””

I felt my throat tighten.

“Why would Daniel Mercer be Sofia's biological father?””

Rachel began shaking her head.

“I don't know.””

But before she could say anything else, the front door opened.

Vanessa walked into the house.

She wasn't alone.

A tall man stood behind her.

Dark hair.

A scar near his ear.

Daniel Mercer.

He looked directly at me, then smiled.

May you like

“Hello, Marcus,” he said.

“It's time we talked about my daughter.””
