Chapter 9: The Address Hidden in the Hospital Records

Detective Harris photographed the message and handed the phone to the technical officer.

“Can you trace the number?””

“We'll try. It may be disconnected, but the message metadata could still help.””

I stood beside the sofa.

“Vanessa, who has Lily?””

She shook her head.

“I don't know his name.””

“You've already told us about Daniel. Who else is involved?””

“Daniel didn't work alone.””

“Then who did?””

She looked toward the hallway.

“I only met him once.””

“Where?””

“At the hospital.””

“Describe him.””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“He was older. Maybe in his sixties. Gray hair. He wore glasses and carried a leather briefcase.””

Harris stopped writing.

“Was his name Richard Hayes?””

Vanessa nodded.

I looked at the detective.

“That's the doctor she mentioned earlier?””

“Yes.””

“Where is he now?””

Harris checked his phone.

“According to our preliminary records, Dr. Hayes retired four years ago. His last known address is outside the city.””

I felt anger rising again.

“So a doctor, a hospital employee, and Daniel Mercer arranged to switch two babies, and nobody noticed?””

“Someone noticed,” Harris replied.

“That's why Elena started investigating.””

I turned toward Vanessa.

“Why did you stay with me?””

She stared at the floor.

“Because I loved you.””

I laughed once.

It sounded ugly.

“You loved me?””

“Yes.””

“You married me while knowing you had helped destroy my first family.””

“I thought I could make things right.””

“How?””

She didn't answer.

I leaned forward.

“By raising Sofia while telling her that her mother abandoned her?””

Vanessa started crying.

“I didn't know what else to do.””

“You could have told the truth.””

She looked up.

“Daniel said he'd expose everything. He said he'd make sure I went to prison.””

I shook my head.

“You should have been afraid of prison. Not afraid of losing your comfortable life.””

The detective interrupted.

“Mrs. Cole, did Dr. Hayes ever mention where Lily was taken?””

Vanessa hesitated.

Then she nodded.

“He said she was going to a private residence.””

“Where?””

“I don't know the address.””

“Do you remember the name of the residence?””

She closed her eyes.

“Cedar House.””

Harris immediately looked at his colleague.

“Check it.””

The officer stepped away.

Vanessa continued.

“Daniel called it a temporary arrangement. He said the girl would be raised by people who wouldn't ask questions.””

I felt my stomach tighten.

“People who wouldn't ask questions?””

“He said they were paid.””

I looked at Sofia.

She was watching us silently.

I lowered my voice.

“Did Lily know she had a sister?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“I don't think so.””

“Did she know who her parents were?””

“I don't know.””

Harris received a message on his phone.

He read it twice.

Then he turned toward me.

“We found Cedar House.””

“Where?””

“It's a former children's residential facility. It closed five years ago.””

“So where is Lily?””

“The property records show it was purchased by a private foundation.””

“Which foundation?””

Harris showed me the screen.

The name was unfamiliar.

But the registered director wasn't.

Vanessa's name appeared beneath it.

I stared.

“You own that place?””

Vanessa shook her head quickly.

“No. I don't.””

“Your name is on the paperwork.””

“I was asked to sign some documents. Daniel said it was a charity.””

Detective Harris took the phone.

“Mrs. Cole, did you ever visit this property?””

She nodded.

“When?””

“Twice.””

“Did you see a child?””

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.

“Yes.””

“Was it Lily?””

“I think so.””

I stepped closer.

“What do you mean, you think so?””

“She looked like Sofia.””

I gripped the back of the chair.

“Was she being kept there against her will?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“I don't know. She was living with a woman. The woman called herself Aunt Margaret.””

Harris made another note.

“Can you identify her?””

Vanessa nodded.

“Yes.””

Before he could ask another question, the technical officer returned.

“Detective, we've recovered part of the deleted message history.””

Harris took the report.

“What did you find?””

The officer pointed to a timestamp.

“An outgoing message from Vanessa's phone, sent three days after Elena disappeared.””

Harris read it aloud.

The girl is safe. Marcus believes Elena left. You can stop watching the house.

I looked at Vanessa.

“You told them I believed Elena had abandoned us.””

She began crying.

“I was trying to make them leave you alone.””

“Who?””

Harris looked at the next message.

The recipient's number was saved under a single letter.

R.

I felt my stomach tighten.

“Who is R?””

Vanessa looked at me.

Then at Rachel.

Rachel stood up.

“What?””

Vanessa started shaking her head.

“I'm sorry.””

I turned toward my sister.

“Rachel?””

She took a step backward.

“I don't know what she's talking about.””

Detective Harris looked between them.

“Mrs. Cole, identify the recipient.””

Vanessa whispered, “Richard.””

Harris frowned.

“Dr. Richard Hayes?””

Vanessa nodded.

Then she added something that made the entire room go silent.

“He wasn't the only person receiving updates.””

“Who else?”” Harris asked.

Vanessa looked directly at Rachel.

“Her.””

I turned.

Rachel's face had lost all color.

“No,” she whispered.

I stared at her.

“Tell me she's lying.””

Rachel shook her head.

“Marcus, I can explain.””

I felt my throat tighten.

“You knew?””

She started crying.

“I never wanted Sofia hurt.””

“Did you know where Lily was?””

Rachel covered her face.

“Not at first.””

“Did you help them?””

She looked at me.

And then she said the words I had been dreading.

“I helped Elena hide the truth about Sofia's birth.””

I stepped backward.

“What?””

Rachel reached into her handbag and pulled out another envelope.

“This is why Elena contacted me.””

She handed it to Detective Harris.

Inside was a photograph of a woman holding a newborn baby.

The woman was Elena.

The baby was Sofia.

But the photograph had been taken in a hospital room different from the one listed on Sofia's birth certificate.

On the back, Elena had written:

The baby Marcus brought home was never supposed to be ours.

I looked at Rachel.

“What does that mean?””

She wiped her tears.

“Marcus, the DNA report Elena sent you is real. But there's something she never told you.””

“What?””

Rachel pointed at the photograph.

“The baby Daniel wanted wasn't Sofia.””

I stared at her.

“Then who was it?””

Rachel took a shaky breath.

“Lily.””

Detective Harris looked up sharply.

Rachel continued.

“Daniel knew Claire was carrying his child. He arranged the hospital switch because he wanted Lily erased from Claire's life. But when Elena discovered the truth, she made a decision.””

“What decision?””

Rachel looked directly at me.

“She switched the babies back before you took Sofia home.””

I couldn't move.

The DNA report.

The matching bracelets.

The two birth records.

Everything suddenly seemed to contradict itself.

I looked down at the photograph.

“If Elena switched them back, then Sofia is…”

Rachel nodded through her tears.

“Your biological daughter, Marcus.””

For a moment, relief washed over me.

Then Detective Harris examined the documents again.

His expression darkened.

“Wait.””

He turned the photograph over and checked the date.

Then he looked at Rachel.

“This photograph was taken after the date on the official birth records.””

Rachel froze.

Harris slowly placed both documents side by side.

“Mrs. Cole, if Elena switched the babies back, why does this second document show that Sofia's hospital identification number was changed again three days later?””

Rachel opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

The detective leaned forward.

“Who took Sofia out of the hospital after her mother switched the babies?””

Rachel began trembling.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A woman's voice whispered urgently.

“Marcus, it's Elena.””

I nearly dropped the phone.

“Where are you?””

“Listen to me. Don't believe anything Rachel tells you.””

I looked at my sister.

Elena continued.

“Your daughter is in danger. Daniel isn't the one who ordered the switch.””

“Then who did?””

There was a long silence.

Then Elena said five words.

“The father is still alive.””

The call ended.

And Detective Harris slowly turned toward Rachel.

May you like

Because she had just recognized the voice.

And she looked absolutely terrified.
