Chapter 11: The Daughter Nobody Knew About

Lily was sitting in the back of a police vehicle when Marcus finally reached her.

She jumped out before the officer had completely opened the door.

“Daddy!””

Marcus dropped to his knees and wrapped his arms around her.

“I'm here, sweetheart. I'm here.””

She buried her face in his shoulder.

“Mommy said you weren't coming.””

Marcus closed his eyes.

“I will always come for you.””

I stood a few feet away, trying not to cry.

When Lily finally looked at me, she ran into my arms.

“Grandma, are you okay?””

I kissed her forehead.

“I'm okay now that you're safe.””

The officer explained that Lily had been left with a neighbor while Vanessa went to meet someone. The neighbor had become concerned when she overheard a heated phone conversation about money and documents.

When Vanessa returned, she was carrying a suitcase.

She told the neighbor she was leaving town.

The neighbor had called the police.

Vanessa escaped before officers arrived, but Lily was unharmed.

Marcus held his daughter tightly.

“Did Mommy tell you where she was going?””

Lily nodded.

“She said she had to visit someone named Uncle Greg.””

I exchanged a look with Richard.

Gregory.

Of course.

The detective approached us.

“We have officers looking for Vanessa and Gregory's associates. But I need to ask you something, Mrs. Bennett.””

“Yes?””

“Did Robert Bennett ever mention a woman named Lily Collins?””

I felt my stomach tighten.

“Not until I read his letter today.””

The detective nodded.

“We've located an old birth record. The name appears in a sealed adoption file connected to the Collins family.””

Richard stepped forward.

“Can you tell us more?””

“Not without proper authorization. But the file may explain the trust arrangement.””

I looked at Lily.

She was playing with the zipper on Marcus's jacket, unaware that her name had suddenly become connected to a mystery that began before she was born.

“Detective,” I said, “who was Lily Collins?””

He hesitated.

“We believe she was Diane Collins's older sister.””

I felt the room tilt.

“Diane had a sister?””

“According to the adoption record, yes. Her name was Elizabeth Collins, but she was commonly called Lily.””

Richard looked at the photograph.

The young woman holding the baby.

“Was she the woman in Robert's photograph?””

The detective examined it.

“Yes. That's Elizabeth.””

Marcus looked confused.

“Then why did Dad say Vanessa was the beneficiary?””

The detective didn't answer.

Richard turned the photograph over.

“Because Robert may have discovered that Vanessa was connected to Elizabeth's child.””

I looked at the detective.

“Where is Elizabeth now?””

His expression softened.

“She's deceased.””

“When?””

“Twenty-eight years ago.””

I closed my eyes.

A woman had died before I even knew there was a secret in my husband's family.

And somehow, her daughter had become the center of everything.

That evening, Richard and I went to the second bank branch.

Marcus stayed with Lily at my house, where two officers were stationed outside.

The bank manager escorted us into a private consultation room.

She examined the key and the authorization letter.

After several checks, she nodded.

“The box is active. But there is a restriction.””

Richard leaned forward.

“What restriction?””

“It can only be opened by the named beneficiary or an authorized legal representative.””

“Who is the named beneficiary?””

The manager checked the records.

“Vanessa Collins Bennett.””

I stared at her.

“Can she open it without me?””

“Under the current authorization, yes.””

Richard frowned.

“Then we need to know whether she has already accessed it.””

The manager checked the transaction log.

Her expression changed.

“She was here yesterday.””

My heart dropped.

“What did she take?””

The manager opened a sealed access record.

“According to our documentation, she removed one envelope and a small storage device.””

Richard closed his eyes.

“She got there before us.””

I looked at the manager.

“Can you tell us what was inside?””

“I'm sorry. We cannot disclose the contents.””

Richard asked for a copy of the access record.

The manager provided it.

There was one detail that caught my attention.

Vanessa had entered the vault with another person.

The second person's name was listed as an authorized witness.

*Diane Collins.*

I sat back.

“Her mother.””

Richard nodded.

“They knew exactly where the box was.””

Before we left, the manager handed Richard another document.

It was a photocopy of the original deposit agreement.

The beneficiary information was incomplete.

But one line was visible.

In the event of the primary beneficiary's death, the trust shall pass to her direct descendant.

Richard read it twice.

“Evelyn, this changes things.””

I looked at him.

“How?””

“Vanessa may not be the ultimate beneficiary. She may only be holding the documents on behalf of someone else.””

“Who?””

He pointed to the line.

“Her child.””

I thought of Lily.

My granddaughter.

The same little girl who had secretly recorded Vanessa planting the bracelet in my purse.

The same little girl Vanessa had threatened to send away.

I couldn't make sense of it.

“Why would Robert leave money to Vanessa's family?””

Richard looked at the old photograph.

“Because the original beneficiary was her mother.””

He paused.

“And because Robert may have been trying to protect her daughter.””

We returned home just after nine.

Marcus was sitting beside Lily on the sofa.

She was asleep against his shoulder.

The television played quietly in the background.

When he saw us, he stood carefully so he wouldn't wake her.

“What happened?””

I told him about the bank visit.

He listened without interrupting.

Then he asked the question I had been avoiding.

“Mom, do you think Lily is the beneficiary?””

“I don't know.””

Richard placed the photocopy on the coffee table.

“There's one more possibility. The trust may have been established for Elizabeth's descendants, and Robert may have been trying to restore the money after Gregory diverted it.””

Marcus looked at his daughter.

“Then why would Vanessa want the money?””

Richard didn't answer.

Instead, he examined the access record again.

“Because she may believe she's entitled to it.””

Marcus shook his head.

“She has a good job. We have a home. We have everything we need.””

I looked at him.

“Do you know what her debts are?””

He hesitated.

“Not exactly.””

Richard asked, “Have you ever seen a large amount of money deposited into your joint account?””

Marcus frowned.

“Last year, there was a transfer of fifty thousand dollars. Vanessa said her mother had received an inheritance and wanted to help us.””

Richard sat forward.

“Did you spend it?””

“Some of it. We used it to pay down our mortgage.””

“Do you remember which account it came from?””

Marcus shook his head.

“I'd have to check.””

Then his phone rang.

It was a video call request from an unknown number.

He answered.

Vanessa appeared on the screen.

Her face was pale, and her hair was disheveled.

“Marcus, I need you to listen.””

He immediately stood.

“Where are you?””

“That's not important.””

“Where is Lily's trust money?””

Vanessa looked toward the camera.

Then she whispered:

“Your mother has no idea what Robert did to my family.””

I stepped closer.

“Then tell me.””

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.

“Robert didn't just steal from us, Evelyn.””

She swallowed.

May you like

“He stole my mother.””

The screen went black.
