Chapter 7: The Photograph That Changed Everything
Marcus stared at the photograph on his phone as if looking harder might somehow bring his daughter back.
Lily was sitting in the back of a black SUV. Her pale-blue sweater was visible beneath her seat belt, and her cheeks were wet with tears.
Behind her, I could see a man's shoulder.
The same dark jacket Patricia had described.
“Call the police,” I said.
Marcus was already dialing.
Richard grabbed his coat.
“I'm contacting the investigator and the officers handling the original threat. We need the vehicle's location.””
Marcus paced across the office.
“Vanessa has lost her mind. She's taking my daughter somewhere without telling me.””
I held his arm.
“Don't do anything reckless. Lily needs her father thinking clearly.””
He looked at me, his eyes filled with panic.
“Mom, she's nine. She thinks we're going to abandon her.””
Those words hurt.
I remembered Lily following me through the house when she was little, asking whether I would still love her if she broke something. I remembered her sleeping beside me after Robert died because she was afraid I would disappear too.
I couldn't let her feel that fear again.
Richard returned from the hallway.
“The police have the photograph. They're tracing the vehicle through nearby traffic cameras.””
Marcus looked at him.
“How long?””
“I don't know.””
“Then we're going.””
Richard blocked the doorway.
“Marcus, if that man is involved in the forged property documents, he may be dangerous. Let the officers locate them.””
Marcus clenched his fists.
“That's my daughter.””
“And that's exactly why you need to stay alive long enough to bring her home.””
For several seconds, Marcus didn't move.
Then his phone rang.
Vanessa.
He answered immediately.
“Where is Lily?””
“She's fine.””
“Put her on the phone.””
“Not until you listen.””
Marcus switched on the speaker.
Vanessa's voice sounded strangely calm.
“You and your mother have turned this into something it never needed to be.””
“You forged her signature.””
“I was trying to protect our family's future.””
“You tried to steal her house!””
“Your mother has more money than she knows what to do with. Meanwhile, we're drowning in expenses.””
I stepped closer to the phone.
“Vanessa, you have no right to my property.””
She laughed.
“That's what you think.””
Marcus's voice shook.
“Where are you taking my daughter?””
“Somewhere safe.””
“From whom?””
“From people who keep interfering.””
I interrupted.
“Vanessa, what does Gregory have to do with this?””
Silence.
Then she answered.
“You should have left his name alone.””
Richard looked at me sharply.
I continued.
“Did Gregory pay you to steal my house?””
Vanessa's breathing changed.
“You don't understand the situation.””
“Then explain it.””
She laughed softly.
“Your husband understood it. That's why he hid everything from you.””
My stomach tightened.
“What did Robert hide?””
But Vanessa refused to answer.
Instead, she said, “There's a reason Gregory was at your house the night Robert died.””
Marcus stepped toward the phone.
“What reason?””
“Ask your mother what she remembers about that night.””
I felt the blood drain from my face.
“Vanessa, put Lily on the phone.””
“No.””
“Please.””
For the first time, my voice broke.
There was a brief rustling sound.
Then Lily whispered, “Grandma?””
I closed my eyes.
“I'm here, sweetheart.””
“Mommy says you did something bad.””
My heart cracked.
“I didn't, baby. I promise.””
“Are you coming to get me?””
“Yes.””
I looked at Marcus.
He nodded, tears gathering in his eyes.
“We're coming,” I told her.
The call disconnected.
A few minutes later, Richard received a message from the investigator.
The black SUV had been spotted near an industrial property outside Hartford.
Police units were on their way.
We followed their instructions and drove to a nearby staging area.
The cold afternoon wind cut through my coat as we waited beside Richard's car.
Marcus stood with his phone in his hand.
He kept calling Lily.
No answer.
Then an officer approached.
“Mr. Bennett?””
Marcus turned.
“We located the vehicle.””
“Where is my daughter?””
“The SUV was found abandoned near an old warehouse. There was no one inside.””
Marcus looked as though someone had punched him.
“What?””
“The vehicle belongs to a company registered to Ethan Cole.””
Richard stepped forward.
“Did you find any evidence?””
The officer nodded.
“A child's backpack, a phone charger, and some documents.””
“Where is Lily?”” I demanded.
The officer looked at me.
“We're still searching.””
Marcus began walking toward the warehouse.
Two officers stopped him.
“Sir, we need you to stay here.””
Then Richard's phone rang.
He answered.
His expression changed almost immediately.
“What do you mean?””
He listened.
Then he looked at me.
“Evelyn, they found something.””
He turned the phone so we could see the photograph.
It showed a small white envelope lying on the passenger seat of the abandoned SUV.
My name was written across the front.
Inside was a single photograph of Robert and Gregory standing together outside a bank.
On the back, someone had written:
*Ask Evelyn what happened to the money before Robert died.*
I stared at the handwriting.
It was Robert's.
Marcus looked at me.
“Mom?””
I couldn't answer.
Because suddenly, I remembered something I had spent twelve years trying to forget.
The night Robert died, he had asked me to bring him a glass of water.
When I returned, he was arguing with someone in his study.
And I had heard him say:
“Gregory, if you touch that money, you'll destroy this family.””
May you like
Then came the sound of something hitting the floor.
And after that, silence.
