Chapter 4: The Voice Behind the Secret

“The only problem is, Marcus still thinks the house belongs to him.””

The voice coming from the phone belonged to Marcus's older brother, Darius.

For several seconds, Marcus couldn't make sense of what he had heard. He stood in the middle of the bright living room, his daughter pressed against his side, while the afternoon sunlight fell across the hardwood floor.

Darius had helped him buy his first construction truck. Darius had stood beside him at Danielle's funeral. When Marcus remarried, Darius had been the one who told him he deserved another chance at happiness.

And now his brother was talking about his home as if Marcus were a temporary guest.

Marcus replayed the recording.

“The only problem is, Marcus still thinks the house belongs to him,” Darius repeated.

A second voice answered.

Vanessa.

“He won't think that for much longer.””

Marcus felt Ava's fingers curl around his hand.

“Daddy?”” she whispered.

He looked down at her.

“I'm here, sweetheart.””

“Are you going to leave me with her?””

The question nearly broke him.

“No. I'm not leaving you alone with anyone.””

Vanessa let out an irritated breath.

“Marcus, you're frightening her by behaving like this.””

He turned toward her.

“You're not going to tell me how to comfort my daughter.””

“I have done nothing but try to help this family.””

“Then explain why my brother thinks he can take my house away from me.””

Vanessa's face tightened.

“Darius is worried about you.””

“Worried enough to plan something behind my back?””

“You have no idea how difficult things have been while you've been working.””

Marcus looked at the phone.

“Then let's hear the rest.””

He pressed play again.

Darius's voice emerged through the speaker.

“Once the paperwork goes through, you won't have to keep pretending everything is fine.””

Vanessa answered, “I need Marcus to sign before he starts asking questions.””

“And Ava?””

There was a pause.

Vanessa's response was almost casual.

“She'll be taken care of.””

Marcus stopped the recording.

The silence afterward felt heavier than the words themselves.

“What does that mean?”” he demanded.

Vanessa shook her head.

“It means exactly what it sounds like. I was talking about making arrangements for her.””

“What arrangements?””

“Private school. A different living situation. Somewhere she can get the attention she needs.””

Ava shrank against Marcus.

“I don't want to go anywhere,” she whispered.

Marcus crouched beside her.

“You don't have to decide anything right now.””

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“You're acting as though I suggested throwing her into the street. I was trying to find a solution to a problem you refuse to acknowledge.””

Marcus rose slowly.

“She isn't a problem.””

“She has made our marriage impossible!””

“No. You made this marriage impossible when you decided my daughter was someone you could humiliate.””

Vanessa's eyes filled with angry tears.

“You think you're such a perfect father? You missed her school recital last month. You forgot her science fair. You leave me to handle everything, and then you come home and judge me for how I handle it.””

The accusation struck a nerve because part of it was true.

Marcus had missed the recital after a client meeting ran late. He had arrived at the science fair just before the doors closed. He had trusted Vanessa when she said Ava understood.

He had allowed his guilt over Danielle's death to convince him that providing a beautiful house and financial security could make up for the hours he spent away.

But none of that gave Vanessa permission to hurt his child.

“You should have called me,” he said.

“I did call you!””

“Then you should have told me the truth.””

Vanessa looked away.

Marcus returned to the recording list.

There were six audio files, all created that afternoon. He opened the details of the second recording and noticed a contact name attached to a recent incoming call.

*Darius Reed.*

Beneath it was a message preview.

Did she get the girl to cooperate? We need this finished before Friday.

Marcus felt cold despite the warm sunlight pouring through the windows.

He showed Vanessa the screen.

“What does this mean?””

She glanced at it and immediately looked away.

“Nothing.””

“Stop saying that.””

“You're taking ordinary messages and turning them into a conspiracy.””

“Then call Darius.””

Vanessa froze.

Marcus held out the phone.

“Call him. Put him on speaker. Let's all talk about these papers together.””

“No.””

The answer came too quickly.

“Why not?””

“Because your brother has work to do, and I will not drag him into one of your emotional outbursts.””

Marcus gave a humorless laugh.

“My emotional outburst?””

“You heard me.””

Ava tugged at his sleeve.

“Daddy, can we go to Grandma's?””

Marcus looked down.

His mother, Evelyn, lived twenty minutes away. Ava had spent many happy weekends there, baking cornbread and listening to stories about her late mother.

“Of course,” he said.

“We can go wherever you feel safe.””

Vanessa stepped between him and the front door.

“You are not taking her anywhere.””

Marcus stared at her.

“Move.””

“You can't just remove my stepdaughter because you're angry.””

“Watch me.””

“You'll regret this, Marcus.””

He picked up Ava's small pink backpack from beside the stairs. It was the one she used for sleepovers at her grandmother's house.

Vanessa followed him, her heels striking the floor.

“If you walk out that door, don't expect me to pretend everything is normal when you come back.””

Marcus stopped.

He turned just enough to meet her eyes.

“Normal ended when I found my daughter kneeling on the floor wearing that sign.””

For a moment, Vanessa looked as though she might slap him.

Instead, she leaned closer and lowered her voice.

“You should ask your brother what happened to the money Danielle left Ava.””

Marcus went completely still.

The name of his first wife changed the air in the room.

“What did you just say?””

Vanessa's expression shifted. She had revealed something she hadn't intended to reveal.

“I said you should ask Darius about the money.””

“What money?””

She looked toward the phone in his hand.

Then she smiled faintly.

“Ask him.””

Marcus stared at her, trying to decide whether she was bluffing.

Danielle had left a small inheritance for Ava. Marcus had established an account for his daughter and arranged for Darius, who worked in finance, to help him review the paperwork. The money was supposed to remain untouched until Ava was older.

He had checked the account months ago.

Everything had appeared fine.

“Where is my daughter's money?”” he asked.

Vanessa's smile disappeared.

“I think you should have that conversation with your brother.””

Marcus opened the front door.

Before stepping outside, he looked back at his wife.

“You're going to explain everything.””

Vanessa stood in the sunlight, her arms folded over her chest.

“I'm not the person you should be worried about.””

Then Marcus's phone vibrated.

A new message had arrived from Darius.

Don't listen to Vanessa. She doesn't know the whole plan.

Marcus read it twice.

Behind him, Ava clutched her backpack.

May you like

And for the first time, Marcus understood that whatever was happening in his house had started long before that afternoon.

It had started with a secret his own family had been keeping from him.
