Chapter 9: The Agreement Nobody Was Supposed to Find
Marcus played the recording again.
“None of us will be safe.””
His mother's voice was unmistakable.
He sat staring at the laptop, unable to reconcile the woman who had spent the previous night comforting Ava with the voice of someone who appeared to know about a secret agreement involving Danielle.
Renee looked horrified.
“I didn't know Mom was involved.””
Marcus turned toward her.
“Did you hear this before?””
“No. I swear.””
He looked back at the screen.
The recording contained no clear explanation of what had happened to the original agreement. It lasted less than two minutes, and the conversation appeared to have been recorded without the speakers knowing.
He needed answers.
But he would not accuse his mother based on an incomplete recording.
He closed the laptop.
“Call her in here.””
Renee looked toward the living room.
“Marcus, maybe we should let Rebecca—”
“I'm not going to threaten her. I'm going to ask her what she knows.””
Evelyn entered the kitchen a few minutes later, carrying a plate of toast.
She set it down and looked at their faces.
“What happened?””
Marcus turned the laptop toward her.
“I need you to listen to something.””
He pressed play.
Evelyn's expression changed before the recording reached its end. Her fingers tightened around the edge of the table.
When the audio stopped, she slowly sat down.
Marcus waited.
Finally, she whispered, “Where did you get that?””
“Danielle's files.””
Evelyn looked toward the living room, where Ava was still watching cartoons.
“Is she listening?””
“No.””
His mother covered her face.
“Marcus, I never wanted this to happen.””
He stared at her.
“What didn't you want to happen?””
Evelyn lowered her hands.
“Darius came to me before you met Vanessa. He said Danielle was worried about the inheritance and that she was making decisions based on fear. He asked me to help him persuade her to sign a financial agreement.””
“What agreement?””
“A document that would let him manage certain investments for Ava.””
Marcus leaned forward.
“Did Danielle sign it?””
“No.””
“Then what happened to the original?””
Evelyn looked down.
“I don't know.””
“Mom.””
“I truly don't know. Darius said the document had been destroyed.””
Marcus let out a slow breath.
“Why did you tell him none of us would be safe?””
Evelyn's eyes filled with tears.
“Because he told me he had already transferred some of the money. He said if Danielle reported him, he could lose his business, his house, everything. He begged me to help him convince her to keep it quiet.””
“And you agreed?””
“I agreed to speak to her. I did not agree to steal from Ava.””
“Did you know he was still moving money?””
“No.””
“Did you know he was planning to use my house as collateral?””
Evelyn shook her head.
“No, Marcus. I swear to you.””
He studied her face.
He wanted to believe her. But trust had become a dangerous thing to hand out without evidence.
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“Because I was ashamed. I thought Darius would fix the problem. He said the transfers were temporary, and he promised that every dollar would be returned.””
“When?””
“Before Ava turned eighteen.””
Marcus stood and walked to the window.
His mother had known that something was wrong with the inheritance and had chosen silence because she believed her son could be spared the pain.
Instead, that silence had allowed the situation to grow.
“Danielle was trying to protect Ava,” he said.
“You knew that.””
Evelyn began to cry.
“Yes.””
“And you let her believe she was alone.””
“I know.””
Marcus turned around.
“I don't know how to forgive that.””
Evelyn nodded, accepting the words without defending herself.
“I don't expect you to forgive me today.””
For a moment, no one spoke.
Then Ava appeared in the doorway, holding her drawing.
“Grandma? Why are you crying?””
Evelyn quickly wiped her face.
“I'm all right, sweetheart.””
Ava looked at Marcus.
“Are we in trouble?””
He crossed the kitchen and crouched in front of her.
“No, baby. The adults are trying to understand something. You haven't done anything wrong.””
Ava studied his expression.
“Promise?””
“I promise.””
She handed him the drawing.
This time, she had added another figure beside the house. A woman with long hair and a small smile.
“That's Mommy,” Ava explained.
“Grandma helped me remember what her hair looked like.””
Marcus swallowed hard.
“It's beautiful.””
“Can we put it in your office when we go home?””
He held her hand.
“Yes. We can.””
Ava returned to the living room.
Marcus watched her go, then turned back to his mother.
“From now on, nobody keeps information about Ava from me. If you remember anything else, you tell Rebecca.””
Evelyn nodded.
“I will.””
An hour later, Rebecca arrived with a folder of preliminary findings.
She listened to the recording and examined the documents Renee had brought.
“The audio supports the possibility that your brother attempted to obtain authority over Ava's trust without proper consent,” she said.
“But we need authenticated records before making a definitive claim. I'll preserve the files and arrange for a forensic examination.””
“What about the loan?””
“The lender has confirmed that the application is under review. They have also provided an electronic submission record.””
Rebecca placed a printed page on the table.
The application had been submitted through Vanessa's company. The digital account used to upload the document had been registered to Darius.
Marcus rubbed his jaw.
“So they were working together.””
“The evidence points toward coordination, but we still need to establish what each person knew and intended.””
Rebecca turned to another page.
“There is also a second document. It appears to be an agreement concerning the proceeds of the loan.””
Marcus read it.
The document stated that a portion of the funds would be directed toward a private company after the loan closed. The company was controlled by Darius.
Another section referred to a proposed change in Ava's residence.
The language was vague, but one phrase stood out:
Upon completion of the residential transition, the remaining funds may be released.
Marcus looked up.
“They were going to use my house to borrow money, move the money through their company, and get Ava out of the way.””
“That's one possible interpretation,” Rebecca said.
“We need the full agreement and evidence of the intended transaction before we can establish the complete scheme.””
Marcus nodded, though anger was making it difficult to sit still.
Then Renee spoke.
“There's something I haven't told you.””
Marcus turned.
“What?””
“Vanessa contacted me again last night.””
Rebecca immediately opened her notebook.
“What did she say?””
“She told me that if I went to the police or spoke to a lawyer, I'd be putting Ava in danger.””
Marcus's expression hardened.
“Did she explain how?””
“She said Darius had documents that could make you look financially irresponsible. She said if the dispute became public, someone could argue that Ava shouldn't live with you.””
Rebecca leaned forward.
“Do you have the message?””
Renee handed over her phone.
Rebecca photographed the screen and asked her to preserve the original message.
“This is relevant,” she said.
“Do not respond to Vanessa. I'll document the contact and advise you on the next steps.””
Marcus stood.
“I'm going to Darius's office.””
Rebecca shook her head.
“Not alone, and not without a plan. We need to avoid giving him an opportunity to destroy records or provoke a confrontation.””
“Then what do you suggest?””
“We request the remaining records through the proper channels. We also arrange a formal interview with your brother. If he contacts you, keep the conversation in writing.””
Marcus hated the idea of waiting.
But Rebecca was right. He had spent too many months accepting assurances without checking facts. He would not make another decision based solely on anger.
That afternoon, Darius called.
Marcus answered with Rebecca sitting beside him.
“Marcus,” Darius said, “we need to settle this before it gets worse.””
“Then tell me the truth.””
“I have been trying to protect you.””
“From what?””
“From losing everything.””
Marcus looked at Rebecca, who silently motioned for him to continue.
“Explain the loan,” Marcus said.
Darius sighed.
“The company needed temporary financing. Vanessa believed the house could support it, and I thought we could repay the loan before you ever noticed.””
“You forged my signature.””
“I didn't sign your name.””
“You witnessed a document that I never signed.””
Silence.
Then Darius said, “I thought you would agree once I explained.””
“You used my daughter's inheritance.””
“I was going to replace it.””
“With what money?””
Darius didn't answer.
Marcus felt his hands begin to shake.
“You had years to tell me the truth.””
“I was trying to fix it.””
“No. You were trying to keep me from finding out.””
Darius's voice hardened.
“You don't understand what Vanessa has at stake.””
“What does she have at stake?””
“Everything.””
Marcus looked toward the window.
“Then perhaps she should have thought about that before hurting my daughter.””
He ended the call.
Rebecca immediately made a note of the time and the statements Darius had made.
Then Marcus's phone rang again.
This time, the caller was Vanessa.
He answered but said nothing.
Her voice came through, strained and furious.
“Marcus, you need to bring Ava home.””
“No.””
“She's my stepdaughter.””
“Then you should have treated her like family.””
Vanessa inhaled sharply.
“You think you've won because you've found a few documents?””
“I think you've made a terrible mistake.””
“You don't know what you're doing.””
“Then explain it to me.””
For several seconds, Vanessa said nothing.
Then her voice changed.
“Ask your mother why Danielle's original agreement disappeared. Ask her why she let Darius keep the money. And ask her what she promised him in return.””
Marcus's stomach tightened.
“My mother promised him nothing.””
“You believe that because you want to.””
“Where is the original agreement, Vanessa?””
She laughed bitterly.
“Somewhere you will never find it.””
Then she hung up.
Rebecca immediately asked him to preserve the call details and record everything he remembered.
Marcus looked at the phone.
Vanessa had just confirmed that the missing agreement mattered.
But the most unsettling part was her reference to Evelyn.
His mother had admitted knowing about the proposed financial arrangement. She had denied knowing where the original document went.
Now Vanessa was suggesting something more.
Marcus turned toward the kitchen, where Evelyn was helping Ava prepare a sandwich.
For the first time, he wondered whether the secret had been kept not merely to protect Darius, but because the original agreement contained something that could implicate everyone who had remained silent.
And if Vanessa knew where it was, she had a reason to keep Ava away from the house.
Because somewhere inside that home—or inside the records connected to it—was the one document that could expose the entire plan.
Rebecca closed her folder.
“Marcus, we need to search for the original agreement through the lawful process. If Vanessa has it, she may try to use it as leverage.””
He nodded.
Then his phone buzzed with a message from an unknown number.
A photograph appeared.
It showed a sealed envelope lying on a desk.
On the front, in Danielle's unmistakable handwriting, were four words:
*FOR MARCUS. OPEN ALONE.*
Beneath the photograph was a message.
Your brother doesn't know I kept this copy.
Marcus stared at the screen.
A second message arrived.
Meet me tomorrow. Come without Rebecca. If you want to know what Danielle really signed, you need to hear it from me.
May you like
The sender's name appeared beneath the message.
*Vanessa Reed.*
