Chapter 12: The Secret My Brother Was Paid to Keep
Nobody moved.
David looked as though he had been slapped.
Vanessa stared at Richard.
Elaine covered her mouth.
I slowly turned toward my brother.
"Explain.""
David shook his head.
"He's lying.""
Richard gave a short laugh.
"Am I?""
Daniel stood.
"Mr. Cole, sit down. This meeting is being documented, and you should not leave before we've clarified these statements.""
Richard ignored him.
He looked directly at me.
"Your brother approached me first. He wanted access to the estate before Vanessa ever became involved.""
I stared.
"That's not true.""
Richard opened his briefcase.
He removed a thin folder and placed it on the table.
"Ask him about the original house.""
I looked at David.
His face had gone pale.
"What about it?""
Richard opened the folder.
Inside were copies of several emails.
The first was dated eleven months before my mother's death.
It was from David to Richard.
The subject line read:
*MOTHER'S PROPERTY ARRANGEMENT.*
I read the email.
David had asked whether there was a way to challenge my mother's decision to place the house into a protective trust for Maya.
Richard had replied that it would be difficult unless the original authorization could be amended.
David's response was short.
Then we need to make sure the amendment looks legitimate.
I stopped reading.
The room became blurry.
I looked at my brother.
"Why?""
David stared at the table.
"Marcus...""
"Why would you do this?""
He rubbed his face.
"Because I was drowning.""
I laughed once.
"Drowning?""
"I had debts.""
"How much?""
He didn't answer.
Richard did.
"Approximately $190,000.""
I looked at David.
He nodded slowly.
"I owed money to several creditors. My business had collapsed.""
"So you decided to steal from your niece?""
"I wasn't trying to steal from Maya!""
I slammed my hand against the table.
"Then what were you doing?""
David flinched.
"I thought I could borrow against the property. I thought I'd pay it back.""
"With what?""
"My business was supposed to recover.""
"And when it didn't?""
He looked away.
Richard answered for him.
"Vanessa offered to help.""
I turned toward her.
Vanessa's expression was now cold and controlled.
"Don't look at me like that, Marcus. David came to me.""
David shook his head.
"You promised me I wouldn't lose everything.""
"I gave you an opportunity.""
"You told me the money would be transferred.""
"And it was.""
I stared at both of them.
They were arguing over my daughter's inheritance as though it were a business disagreement.
I opened another email.
It showed that David had received a payment of $25,000 shortly after signing the disputed amendment.
The description was listed as consulting services.
"Was this your payment?""
David nodded.
"Yes.""
"And the other forty thousand?""
"Some went toward my debts.""
I stared at him.
"So you took sixty-five thousand dollars?""
He looked up.
"I didn't know how bad things would get.""
I pointed toward the purple notebook.
"Did you know what Vanessa was doing to Maya?""
"No.""
"Did you know she was making her wash everyone's clothes?""
"No.""
"Did you know she was withholding dinner?""
David shook his head.
"Marcus, I swear—"
"Did you know she was planning to send her away?""
He looked toward Richard.
Then he whispered:
"Yes.""
The room went silent.
I felt my heart beating painfully.
"When?""
"Three months ago.""
"Three months?""
He nodded.
"Vanessa said Maya was becoming difficult. She said a boarding placement would solve the problem.""
"And you agreed?""
"I thought it was temporary.""
I stared at him.
"She's eleven years old.""
"I know.""
"She's your niece.""
David covered his face.
"I know!""
For a moment, I saw tears in his eyes.
But I couldn't bring myself to comfort him.
He had been the person my mother trusted.
He had been the person who promised to protect Maya.
And he had accepted money to help remove her from the family.
Daniel interrupted.
"Mr. Hale, there is one important question we haven't answered.""
He turned toward Richard.
"Who created the forged trust amendment?""
Richard remained silent.
Daniel placed the disputed document beside the email.
"We have a copy of the original signature, the altered version, and the financial transfers. We also have a witness statement from Elaine Parker.""
Richard leaned back.
"You don't have the original document.""
Daniel smiled faintly.
"Actually, we do.""
He opened a sealed evidence envelope.
Inside was a document recovered through the proper legal process from the storage unit.
The original trust amendment.
Richard's expression changed.
Daniel pointed to the bottom.
"There's a handwritten note on the reverse side.""
I leaned closer.
The note was short.
*Use Marcus's old signature from the mortgage file. David says it will match closely enough.*
Below it was a set of initials.
R.C.
Richard Cole.
I looked at my brother.
"Did you know?""
David nodded.
"I gave him the signature.""
I stepped away from the table.
I needed air.
I needed to leave the room.
But before I could move, Vanessa spoke.
"You're all acting as though I did this for myself.""
I turned.
"Didn't you?""
She shook her head.
"Your mother was going to leave me with nothing.""
"You had a home. You had a family. You had a husband.""
"Your mother never accepted me!""
"That doesn't give you the right to take from my daughter.""
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.
"Do you know what it's like to spend years being treated like an outsider? I raised those children while you worked. I kept this house running.""
"And Maya?""
"She was difficult.""
"She was a child.""
"She was always getting in the way!""
The words came out so sharply that even David looked up.
Vanessa continued.
"Everything was about Maya. Her grandmother's money. Her grandmother's house.
Her grandmother's rules. I couldn't make a single decision without hearing that something belonged to her.""
I stared at her.
"So you decided to make her earn the right to live in her own home?""
Vanessa didn't answer.
Then Richard spoke.
"You're wasting time. The important part is that the final transfer was never completed.""
Daniel turned toward him.
"What final transfer?""
Richard hesitated.
I felt a chill.
"There's another document?""
He looked at Vanessa.
She stared at the table.
Richard finally opened his briefcase again.
He removed a final sheet.
It was a transfer authorization dated three days earlier.
The document attempted to move the beneficial interest in Maya's property into Hale Family Property Holdings.
The signature at the bottom appeared to be mine.
But something else caught my attention.
The date.
It was signed after I had already discovered the missing money.
"Who signed this?""
Richard said nothing.
Daniel examined the document.
"Was this submitted to the property registry?""
"Not yet.""
"Why?""
Richard looked toward Vanessa.
She answered.
"Because we needed Maya's birth certificate.""
My stomach dropped.
"Why?""
Vanessa folded her hands.
"To establish the transfer.""
Daniel stared at her.
"That isn't how a minor's beneficial interest can simply be transferred.""
Vanessa's expression hardened.
"Richard said he could handle it.""
Richard immediately snapped.
"I told you it required additional documentation!""
I looked between them.
They were blaming each other.
But the document had been prepared.
My daughter's home was still at risk.
Daniel took possession of the paper through the appropriate process and instructed the trustee to initiate an urgent protective review.
Then my phone rang.
It was Maya.
I stepped into the hallway.
"Hi, sweetheart.""
"Dad?""
"Yes?""
"Can you come home?""
My chest tightened.
"What's wrong?""
She hesitated.
"There's a man here.""
I froze.
"What man?""
"He says he's Uncle David's friend.""
I looked through the conference room glass.
David was still inside.
"Where are you?""
"At the apartment.""
"Stay with Tyler and Sophie. Don't open the door.""
Maya's breathing became faster.
"Dad, he knows my name.""
I felt the blood drain from my face.
"What did he say?""
She whispered:
"He said Grandma left something for me.""
I turned toward Daniel.
He immediately stood.
"Marcus?""
I covered the phone.
"Someone is at the apartment.""
Daniel grabbed his jacket.
I returned to the call.
"Maya, listen carefully. Stay away from the door.""
Then I heard a man's voice through the phone.
"Hello, Maya.""
My daughter screamed.
The call disconnected.
I ran.
Daniel was right behind me.
We reached the elevator as my phone rang again.
This time, it was the building's security desk.
"Mr. Hale?""
"Yes!""
"There's a man downstairs asking for your daughter. He says he's a family attorney.""
I stopped breathing.
"What's his name?""
The security guard hesitated.
"Richard Cole.""
I looked at Daniel.
He immediately called the police.
But before the elevator doors opened, another message arrived on my phone.
It was from Maya.
A photograph.
She had taken it from inside the apartment.
Richard was standing outside the door.
And he was holding a document.
The heading was visible.
*NOTICE OF IMMEDIATE TRANSFER OF GUARDIANSHIP.*
Beneath it was a signature.
Not mine.
Not Vanessa's.
Not David's.
It was my mother's.
And the date was the day after she died.
I stared at the screen.
My mother had been dead for twenty-four hours when someone supposedly used her signature to authorize the document.
Then I noticed the final line.
*BENEFICIARY: MAYA HALE.*
But the destination address wasn't ours.
May you like
It was a residential facility.
And Richard was standing outside my daughter's door with the paperwork that could determine where she spent the rest of her childhood.
