Chapter 13: The Last Document My Mother Signed
The elevator doors opened.
I ran.
Daniel was behind me, speaking urgently into his phone, while I sprinted down the hallway toward the apartment.
Two uniformed officers were already standing near the entrance.
A third man was holding Richard Cole against the wall.
Richard's briefcase lay open on the floor.
"Where's my daughter?"" I shouted.
One officer pointed toward the apartment.
"She's inside with the other children. They're safe.""
I pushed past him.
Maya was sitting on the sofa, holding Sophie so tightly that neither girl seemed able to breathe properly. Tyler stood beside them, gripping a kitchen chair.
When Maya saw me, she ran.
"Dad!""
I caught her and lifted her into my arms.
"You're okay. I've got you.""
She buried her face against my shoulder.
"He said Grandma wanted me to go with him.""
I closed my eyes.
"You're not going anywhere.""
"He said you had agreed.""
"I didn't.""
"He showed me a paper.""
"I know, sweetheart.""
She began crying.
"He said if I didn't listen, the police would come and take me away.""
I held her tighter.
Across the room, Sophie was trembling.
Tyler looked furious.
"He wouldn't leave," Tyler said.
"He kept saying he was legally allowed to take Maya.""
Daniel entered behind me.
"Did he try to enter the apartment?""
Tyler nodded.
"He said he had authority.""
Daniel turned toward the officers.
"Please preserve the document he was carrying. It appears to contain a fraudulent guardianship authorization.""
One officer nodded.
"Mr. Cole is being questioned. We also found several documents in his briefcase.""
I looked at Daniel.
"What documents?""
He glanced toward the open briefcase.
"Travel arrangements, identification copies, and a second guardianship application.""
My stomach tightened.
"Where was Maya supposed to go?""
Daniel examined a paper an officer handed him.
"An out-of-state residential facility. The application lists Vanessa as the requesting guardian.""
I looked at Maya.
She was listening.
I crouched in front of her.
"Sweetheart, I need you to understand something. No one can take you somewhere just because they show you a piece of paper.""
She nodded, but her fingers were still trembling.
"Can we go somewhere else?""
"Yes.""
"Somewhere Vanessa doesn't know?""
I swallowed.
"Yes.""
The officer approached.
"Mr. Hale, we'd like to ask your daughter a few questions, but only when she's comfortable. There's no urgency to do that this moment.""
I nodded.
"Thank you.""
Richard was escorted past the apartment door.
As he passed me, he turned his head.
"You have no idea what your mother started.""
I stepped toward him.
"Then tell me.""
He gave a humorless smile.
"Ask David.""
The officers took him away.
Daniel remained in the apartment.
He collected the documents that had been left behind and began examining the paperwork.
After several minutes, he looked up.
"Marcus, this is worse than I thought.""
"What now?""
He held up the guardianship authorization.
"The signature attributed to your mother appears on a document dated the day after her death.""
I stared at it.
"How is that possible?""
"It isn't. Unless the document was backdated, altered, or created using an earlier signature.""
I looked at the paper.
There were two witness names.
David Hale.
And Vanessa Hale.
My brother and my wife had both witnessed a signature that my dead mother could never have made.
"Can they be prosecuted?""
"That depends on the investigation and the evidence. But this document raises serious concerns.""
He turned to another page.
There was a handwritten note in the margin.
*Facility placement must be completed before December 20.*
I felt sick.
Today was December 17.
They had been planning to remove Maya in three days.
Daniel checked the remaining paperwork.
Then he found something unexpected.
A letter from the original trustee.
It was addressed to Richard.
The letter stated that any attempt to transfer Maya's beneficial interest or change her guardianship without independent approval would automatically trigger a full review of the estate.
At the bottom was a handwritten sentence.
*Mrs. Hale specifically anticipated this possibility.*
I looked at Daniel.
"She knew.""
He nodded.
"Your mother seems to have prepared for several scenarios.""
"Why didn't she tell me?""
"Perhaps she believed telling you would put you in a difficult position while she was alive. Or perhaps she didn't have enough evidence to make accusations.""
I sat down.
My mother had been fighting a battle I hadn't even known existed.
And my daughter had been left to endure the consequences.
That evening, Daniel arranged for the children to stay at a secure family residence while the investigation continued.
Before we left, I received a call from David.
I almost ignored it.
But I answered.
"Marcus?""
"What?""
"Richard was arrested.""
"He's being questioned.""
David exhaled.
"I know.""
"How?""
"Vanessa called me.""
I looked through the window.
Maya was sitting with Sophie, watching a cartoon.
"Why are you calling?""
"I need to see you.""
"No.""
"Please. There's something you don't understand.""
"I understand that you took money from your niece.""
"That's not all.""
I closed my eyes.
"David, I'm done.""
"Mom left something else.""
My grip tightened.
"What?""
"An original letter. Not the recording. A letter she gave me before she died.""
I stood.
"Why didn't you tell Daniel?""
"Because it explains why she wanted the house protected.""
"What does it say?""
David was quiet.
Then he answered:
"She knew Vanessa was planning to use Maya's identity to claim something that didn't belong to her.""
"What something?""
"The original estate.""
I frowned.
"She already had an estate.""
"No, Marcus. I'm talking about the property your mother inherited from Grandpa. The land outside town.""
I remembered it.
A large piece of rural land with an old farmhouse, a barn, and several acres of woodland.
It had been in the family for generations.
My mother had always said it would eventually belong to Maya.
"That land was transferred years ago.""
"Part of it was.""
I felt a chill.
"What do you mean?""
David lowered his voice.
"Grandpa left a separate parcel in a trust. Mom never told anyone except me and the original trustee.""
"Why?""
"Because the land has value beyond what you think.""
I looked at Daniel.
He was watching me.
"How much?""
David answered.
"More than four million dollars.""
I couldn't speak.
Then he added:
"And Vanessa found out.""
The call ended.
Daniel stared at me.
"Marcus, I think we've just discovered the real reason behind everything.""
I looked toward Maya.
My daughter had spent months being treated like an unwanted servant.
She had been threatened, falsely accused, and nearly taken from her father.
All because someone wanted property she didn't even know existed.
And now I understood why my mother had written that the person behind the plan hadn't acted alone.
May you like
There were more people involved.
And the biggest secret hadn't even been revealed.
