Chapter 10: The Woman Who Signed My Wife’s Death Certificate

“The person who was with her was the same person who signed her death certificate.””

Dr. Bennett’s words hung in the living room.

I stared at Vanessa.

She stood beside the sofa, trembling, one hand pressed against her mouth. Detective Harris watched her without blinking, her radio held close to her shoulder.

“Dr. Bennett,” I said, forcing the words through my clenched teeth, “are you telling me my wife’s death certificate was falsified?””

“I’m telling you that the circumstances surrounding her death were not accurately recorded.””

“Then tell me what actually happened.””

“I can’t explain everything over the phone.””

“You’ve had two years!””

“I understand your anger, Mr. Reed.””

“No, you don’t. My daughter is missing. My wife is dead. And everyone who knows something has decided that keeping me ignorant is more important than telling me the truth.””

There was silence on the line.

Then Dr. Bennett said, “Ask Vanessa what she signed.””

I slowly lowered the phone.

Detective Harris turned toward my wife.

“Mrs. Reed, did you sign any documents relating to Danielle Reed’s death?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No.””

The detective waited.

Vanessa looked at me.

“I didn't sign her death certificate.””

“Then what did you sign?”” I asked.

Her lips trembled.

“A statement.””

“What statement?””

She squeezed her eyes shut.

“The hospital asked me to confirm that Danielle had been conscious when I visited her. They wanted to know whether she had said anything unusual.””

“And what did you tell them?””

Vanessa didn't answer.

I stepped toward her.

“What did you tell them?””

“That she hadn't said anything.””

The room went silent.

I remembered Danielle's final words as Vanessa had described them earlier.

Protect Lily.

“You told them she hadn't spoken?””

Vanessa nodded, crying.

“Why?””

“Because Richard said her words could be used against me.””

“What words?””

She shook her head.

“I didn't know what he meant at first. Then Dr. Bennett showed me the form. It said Danielle had been confused and unable to communicate clearly.””

“And you signed it?””

“Yes.””

“Even though she had spoken to you?””

Vanessa covered her face.

“Yes.””

For a moment, all I could hear was the sound of my own breathing.

I had spent two years wondering whether Danielle had been afraid at the end. Whether she'd known she was dying. Whether she had wanted to tell me something I never got to hear.

Now I knew that someone had deliberately erased her final words from the record.

I looked at Detective Harris.

“Can we establish what happened?””

“We can investigate it,” she replied.

“But we need evidence, not assumptions.””

She turned toward the phone.

“Dr. Bennett, this is Detective Harris. I need you to preserve every record you have concerning Danielle Reed, including any communications with Richard Cole and any amendments to her medical chart.””

“I understand.””

“Where are you now?””

“At my office.””

“Remain there. Officers will contact you.””

The call ended.

Detective Harris immediately issued instructions over her radio. One officer was sent to Dr. Bennett’s office. Another team was already moving toward the Mercer Avenue records facility.

I turned back to Vanessa.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

She looked at me through her tears.

“Because I was afraid you'd ask me what Danielle said.””

“And you couldn't bear to tell me?””

“I couldn't bear what would happen if Richard found out I'd told you.””

“You were more afraid of Richard than you were concerned about Lily.””

Vanessa flinched.

“I know how that sounds.””

“It sounds exactly like what happened.””

She sat down, her face buried in her hands.

“I didn't know she was going to die, Marcus. I swear to you. When I left her room, she was still breathing. She was weak, but she was alive.””

“Then why did you leave?””

“Richard told me to.””

“And you obeyed him?””

She looked up.

“He said he had a way to stop the investigation. He said if I stayed, I'd be implicated in the financial transfers. He told me to go home and keep quiet.””

I shook my head.

“You let a man who had threatened my wife tell you what to do while she was lying in a hospital bed.””

Vanessa began crying harder.

“Yes.””

I turned away.

There was no apology capable of repairing that moment.

Then Detective Harris's radio crackled.

“Mercer team approaching the facility. Possible vehicle observed leaving the rear entrance.””

She answered immediately.

“Do you have visual confirmation of the suspect?””

A burst of static.

“Negative. We have an open service door and a vehicle matching the description from the photographs. No confirmation of the child's location yet.””

I stepped forward.

“What does that mean?””

“It means the search is continuing,” Detective Harris said firmly.

“Mr. Reed, stay here. If Richard contacts you again, we need to know immediately.””

My phone vibrated.

A message from Monica.

*I HAVE FOUND THE ORIGINAL FILE. DON'T LET BENNETT DESTROY IT.*

I showed Detective Harris.

She called Monica immediately.

No answer.

I tried the number myself.

Voicemail.

Then a second message arrived.

*THE SIGNATURE WASN'T YOURS. IT WAS VANESSA'S.*

I turned toward my wife.

She stared at the screen.

For a moment, she looked genuinely confused.

Then the expression on her face changed.

“No,” she whispered.

I held the phone toward her.

“What is this?””

She shook her head.

“I never signed that form.””

“Monica says you did.””

“She must be mistaken.””

“You said you approved transfers. You said you altered records. What else have you signed?””

Vanessa pressed both hands against her temples.

“I signed an internal authorization, Marcus. Richard told me it was a temporary transfer approval. I didn't know he'd attached it to the beneficiary change.””

“Could that be the signature Monica found?””

“I don't know.””

Detective Harris took the phone and examined the message.

“We'll need the original document to determine that.””

Vanessa looked at me desperately.

“Marcus, I never wanted to take Lily's inheritance. I was trying to repay what I owed Richard. I thought if I gave him the necklace, he'd stop threatening us.””

“You tried to steal from a child to cover up your own involvement.””

“I know.””

“You watched me believe Danielle's death was a tragedy, knowing you'd helped someone conceal what she said before she died.””

Vanessa lowered her head.

“I know.””

“And now my daughter is missing because the people you trusted want evidence hidden.””

She didn't answer.

For the first time, I understood that the woman standing in front of me wasn't going to give me a single revelation that made everything better. There would be no explanation that transformed her choices into sacrifices or her lies into acts of love.

Whatever happened next, she would have to face what she had done.

My phone rang.

Detective Harris signaled for me to answer on speaker.

“Monica?””

Her voice was breathless.

“I found the file. I'm at the Mercer facility.””

“Where's Lily?”” I demanded.

“I don't know. Richard left before I arrived.””

“Then where is she?””

“I found her necklace.””

My heart dropped.

“What?””

“The gold pendant was lying beside a chair. The key was still inside it.””

I looked at the empty space on the coffee table where Lily's necklace had been.

“Is she there?””

“No. But I found something else.””

“What?””

“The original beneficiary form. The transfer records. And a medical report Danielle obtained before she died.””

Detective Harris moved closer to the phone.

“Monica, don't touch anything else. Officers are on their way.””

“I won't.””

“What's in the medical report?””

Monica paused.

Then she said, “It shows Danielle had been asking for an independent review of her treatment. She suspected someone had altered her medical records.””

I felt the room spin.

“Who?””

“I don't know yet. But there's a signed amendment attached to the report.””

“Whose signature?””

“Dr. Bennett's.””

Detective Harris's expression hardened.

“Preserve the documents. Officers are approaching.””

Monica's voice broke.

“Marcus, there's something else. Danielle wrote a note on the back of the original form.””

I gripped the phone.

“What does it say?””

“She wrote that the person who changed the beneficiary wasn't the person who wanted the money.””

I stared at Vanessa.

Monica continued.

“She said the money was only a way to force someone to reveal what happened at the hospital.””

My heart hammered.

“Who was she talking about?””

“I don't know. The note ends with a name.””

“Whose name?””

Monica took a shaky breath.

“Marcus, it's yours.””

I couldn't speak.

Detective Harris looked at me.

“What does that mean?””

“I don't know,” I whispered.

Monica continued, her voice trembling.

“Danielle wrote that she believed someone had used your identity to authorize the transfer. She said she was afraid that when the truth came out, you would be blamed for something you didn't do.””

I stared at the floor.

For two years, I had thought I was investigating my wife's betrayal of our daughter.

Now I wondered whether someone had been building a case against me from the beginning.

Then a new voice sounded in the background of Monica's call.

A man's voice.

“Put the file down, Monica.””

I recognized it immediately.

Richard.

Monica gasped.

Detective Harris raised her radio.

“Units, possible suspect at Mercer. Move in now.””

I shouted into the phone.

“Monica, get away from him!””

There was a crash.

A muffled cry.

Then silence.

“Monica?””

Nothing.

“MONICA!””

The line disconnected.

Detective Harris was already moving toward the door, speaking rapidly into her radio. One of the officers followed her outside.

I stood in the middle of the living room, unable to move.

Then my phone vibrated again.

A photograph appeared.

It showed the original beneficiary form.

At the bottom was a signature.

*MARCUS REED.*

Beneath it, someone had written a single sentence in red ink.

*IF YOU WANT YOUR DAUGHTER BACK, CONFESS TO WHAT YOU DID.*

I stared at my own name.

I had never signed that document.

But as I enlarged the photograph, I noticed something that made my blood run cold.

The signature wasn't simply a forgery.

It was an exact copy of the signature on a document I had signed only once in my life.

Danielle's original marriage certificate.

And I knew who had access to it.

I slowly raised my eyes toward the hallway where Vanessa had disappeared from view.

For the first time, I wondered whether she had been lying about one final thing.

Not the money.

Not the necklace.

Not even the night Danielle died.

But the reason she had chosen to marry me in the first place.

My phone buzzed one last time.

*ASK YOUR WIFE WHY SHE CHOSE YOU.*

I turned toward the staircase.

“Vanessa!””

No answer.

I ran upstairs.

Her handbag was gone.

Her phone lay abandoned on the bedroom floor.

And on the bed was a folded piece of paper.

I opened it.

The handwriting was Vanessa's.

Marcus, I am sorry. I should have told you the truth before you ever trusted me with Lily.

Beneath that sentence was another.

Richard didn't introduce us by accident.

I read the words twice.

Then I heard Detective Harris shouting from downstairs.

“Mr. Reed! We've found your daughter!””

I ran toward the staircase.

But the officer waiting at the bottom wasn't smiling.

He held out a small evidence bag containing the gold necklace.

Inside the pendant was the tiny strip of paper Monica had described.

And on it, written in Danielle's handwriting, was a final message.

*THE PERSON WHO BETRAYED ME IS THE PERSON MARCUS LOVES MOST.*

I stared at the words.

Then I looked at the empty staircase.

Because somewhere between the missing money, the forged signature, the hospital records, and the woman who had entered my life after my first wife's death, I had finally reached the truth.

And it was far more devastating than anything Richard Cole could have told me.

*Vanessa hadn't married me to steal my daughter's inheritance.*

She had married me because Danielle had left behind evidence that could destroy her.

And for eighteen months, my wife had been living in my house, raising my daughter, and waiting for the day I would discover why.

May you like

That day had finally arrived.

And Vanessa was gone.
