Chapter 9: The Sister Who Came Back From the Dead

For a moment, I thought Vanessa had lost her mind.

“You're telling me Danielle's sister introduced you to Richard?””

Vanessa nodded.

“And you never mentioned this to me?””

“I didn't know she was Danielle's sister until after Danielle died.””

“How is that possible?””

“She used a different name. She told me she was a financial consultant who could help me get out of debt.””

I stared at her.

“You met a stranger who offered to help you with money, and that stranger introduced you to a man who later stole from my daughter?””

Vanessa looked down.

“When you put it that way, it sounds insane.””

“It sounds criminal.””

Detective Harris stepped between us.

“Mrs. Reed, I need the woman's name, every phone number she used, and any records you have of your communications with her.””

Vanessa nodded and began scrolling through her phone.

I turned away, struggling to process what I had heard.

Danielle had a sister.

A sister who knew Richard.

A sister who apparently knew where my daughter was.

And somehow, all of them had been connected to a secret I had never known existed.

My phone rang again.

The same woman.

Detective Harris motioned for me to answer.

“Monica?””

“Yes.””

“Where is Lily?””

“She's alive.””

“That's not enough.””

“I know. I can prove it.””

“Then tell me where she is.””

“Not while Richard can hear us.””

I looked at Detective Harris.

She held up a finger, signaling me to keep the conversation going.

“Why should I trust you?””

“Because I could have let Richard take the money years ago. I didn't.””

“Then why didn't you stop him?””

Silence.

When Monica spoke again, her voice had changed.

“Because I was trying to stop something worse.””

“What could be worse than taking money from a child?””

“Making sure that child never learned why her mother died.””

I gripped the phone.

“You keep saying that. Tell me what happened.””

“Danielle discovered that Richard had falsified records connected to several insurance accounts. She found a pattern. Money disappeared from accounts after certain policyholders died or became unable to manage their finances.””

Detective Harris began writing rapidly.

“Are you saying he was stealing from vulnerable people?””

“Yes.””

“And Danielle found proof?””

“She found enough to make him afraid.””

I swallowed.

“What happened the night she died?””

Monica's breathing grew uneven.

“She was going to report him.””

The room seemed to contract around me.

“Did he kill her?””

“I don't know.””

“You don't know?””

“I wasn't there, Marcus. I can tell you what Danielle told me, what I found in the records, and what Richard admitted afterward. I cannot tell you what happened inside that hospital room.””

“What did he admit?””

“He told me Danielle had become a problem.””

I closed my eyes briefly.

“And you believed him?””

“I believed he was dangerous. That was enough.””

Detective Harris leaned closer and spoke loudly enough for Monica to hear.

“This is Detective Harris. If you have evidence relating to a missing child or a suspicious death, we need your location immediately.””

Monica went silent.

Then she said, “I won't speak to anyone until I know Lily is safe.””

“We are trying to locate her now.””

“Then check the old records facility on Mercer Avenue.””

Vanessa gasped.

I turned toward her.

She was staring at Monica's name on the phone screen.

“That's where Richard kept the archived files,” she whispered.

Detective Harris immediately relayed the location to the officers.

“Monica,” I said, “is Lily there?””

“I believe so.””

“Believe?””

“Richard told me he was taking her somewhere he could control the conversation. The Mercer facility is the only place I know that fits.””

My heart pounded.

“Why would he take a child there?””

“Because he thinks she knows where Danielle hid the original evidence.””

I looked toward the stairs.

“She's seven. She doesn't understand any of this.””

Monica's voice softened.

“Danielle taught her a memory game.””

I went still.

“What game?””

“She showed Lily a series of objects and taught her to remember their order. She said it was something they could play whenever Lily was frightened.””

I remembered Lily rubbing the necklace's pendant with her thumb.

Monica continued.

“The sequence was connected to the original file. Danielle believed Lily would remember it even if she was too young to understand what it meant.””

I felt sick.

“My wife used our daughter to hide evidence?””

“She used what she had to protect her.””

“She's a child!””

“I know.””

Monica's voice cracked for the first time.

“Do you think Danielle wanted this? Do you think she wanted to leave her daughter with a secret that might follow her for the rest of her life?””

I had no answer.

Detective Harris took the phone from me.

“Monica, listen carefully. We have officers moving toward the Mercer facility. Do not approach the building.

Do not contact Richard. If you have evidence, preserve it and tell us where it is.””

“I can't.””

“Why not?””

“Because Richard has a copy of something that could destroy my life.””

“What?””

A long silence followed.

Then Monica said, “The original beneficiary form.””

Vanessa covered her mouth.

Detective Harris looked at her.

“Do you know what she's referring to?””

Vanessa nodded slowly.

“The form that supposedly authorized the transfer of Danielle's money.””

Monica continued.

“Richard has the document with Marcus's forged signature. But I have the original version Danielle signed before the changes were made.””

My pulse quickened.

“Where?””

“In a safety deposit box under my legal name.””

“What is your legal name?””

“Danielle's sister was born Monica Elaine Brooks. But the name I've used for years is Monica Hayes.””

Detective Harris wrote it down.

“Why didn't you come forward earlier?””

“Because I was afraid.””

“Of Richard?””

“Of Richard, yes. And of what the records might reveal about my own part in this.””

Vanessa suddenly spoke.

“You helped him!””

Monica didn't deny it.

“I did. At first. I introduced Vanessa to him because he promised he could help her settle her debts. I believed him when he said Danielle had stolen money from the bank.””

“You knew it was a lie!”” Vanessa cried.

“I suspected it. I didn't know how deep it went until Danielle showed me the records.””

“And you left her alone!””

Monica's voice broke.

“Yes.””

The admission filled the room.

For the first time, the woman on the phone sounded less like a mysterious rescuer and more like someone who had spent years carrying a terrible mistake.

“I left my sister alone because I was angry with her,” Monica continued.

“We'd stopped speaking after our mother died. I thought she always believed she knew better than everyone else. When she called me about Richard, I told her I didn't want to get involved.””

I stared at the phone.

“And now?””

“Now she's dead, and my niece is missing.””

Nobody spoke.

Then Monica added, “There's something you need to know about the necklace.””

I looked at the gold chain on the table.

“The key isn't the only thing Danielle hid inside the pendant.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No. That's impossible.””

“What else is inside?”” I asked.

Monica took a breath.

“A tiny strip of paper. Danielle wrote a name on it.””

“Whose name?””

“Not Richard's.””

The line crackled again.

I leaned closer.

“Tell me.””

Monica whispered the name.

“Dr. Samuel Bennett.””

Vanessa stumbled backward.

I turned toward her.

“You know him?””

She looked as though she might faint.

“He was the doctor who treated Danielle.””

Detective Harris immediately asked Monica to repeat the name.

But before she could, the call ended.

My phone buzzed with a new message.

It was from Richard.

*YOU SHOULD HAVE STAYED OUT OF THE PAST.*

A second message appeared.

*YOUR DAUGHTER HAS JUST TOLD ME WHAT I NEED TO KNOW.*

I felt the blood drain from my face.

Then came a photograph.

Lily sat at a table, crying. The necklace was beside her hand. Across from her sat a man whose face was mostly outside the frame.

But I could see his wrist.

A silver watch.

And beside his hand lay a white hospital folder.

Detective Harris took one look at the photograph and reached for her radio.

“Get every available unit to Mercer Avenue. Now.””

I turned toward Vanessa.

“Why did you react when Monica said the doctor's name?””

She was shaking so badly she could barely stand.

“Because Dr. Bennett told me something after Danielle died.””

“What?””

Vanessa looked directly at me.

“He said Danielle's death had been recorded incorrectly.””

I felt the room go silent.

“What does that mean?””

Her eyes filled.

“He said the time of death on the paperwork wasn't the actual time she died.””

My phone rang again.

This time, the caller ID showed a name.

*DR. SAMUEL BENNETT.*

I stared at it.

Detective Harris motioned for me to answer on speaker.

I did.

A man's calm voice filled the living room.

“Mr. Reed, my name is Dr. Samuel Bennett. I believe you've been given some very dangerous misinformation.””

I gripped the phone.

“My daughter is missing. What do you know about that?””

“I know Richard Cole has involved you in something that began long before you met your second wife.””

“Did you treat Danielle?””

“Yes.””

“Did you falsify her medical records?””

Silence.

Then the doctor replied, “I did what I was instructed to do.””

Vanessa began sobbing.

Detective Harris raised her radio.

I stared at the phone.

“Who instructed you?””

Dr. Bennett took a slow breath.

“Before I answer that, you need to understand one thing.””

“What?””

“Danielle was alive when Richard left her hospital room.””

My knees nearly buckled.

“Then who was with her when she died?””

The doctor's voice dropped to a whisper.

“Your wife wasn't alone, Mr. Reed.””

A pause.

Then he said the words that shattered everything I thought I knew.

“The person who was with her was the same person who signed her death certificate.””

I stared at Vanessa.

May you like

She was crying too hard to speak.

And Detective Harris was looking at her as if she had just become the most important suspect in the room.
