Chapter 13: The Daughter They Tried to Erase
By the time I reached the house, two police officers were standing in the driveway.
Daniel was waiting on the front steps.
He wore a dark suit and the expression of a man who had already won.
Vanessa stood behind him, pale and trembling.
“Emily,” Daniel called.
“I'm glad you've finally come to your senses.””
I ignored him and walked toward the officers.
“What's happening?””
One of them stepped forward.
“Your brother has reported a suspected theft of estate documents and alleged unlawful occupation of the property.””
I stared at Daniel.
“Unlawful occupation? I live here.””
“Not anymore,” he replied.
He held up a document.
“Dad's will.””
I recognized the paper.
It was the original will, the one Mr. Bennett had prepared years earlier.
Daniel waved it toward the officers.
“According to this, the house and the majority of the company were left to me.””
I looked at the signature.
Something was wrong.
The date was correct, but the final page contained a clause I had never seen.
It stated that Richard Carter's estate would pass to Daniel if Emily Carter was found to have misrepresented her identity or concealed her adoption.
I looked at my brother.
“You added that.””
“Prove it.””
“You forged Dad's will.””
Daniel laughed.
“You've been saying that about every document for weeks.””
The officer held out his hand.
“Miss Carter, we need you to come inside and explain your position.””
I stepped toward the front door.
Daniel blocked my way.
“Not so fast.””
He reached into his jacket and pulled out another envelope.
“This is the document you've been avoiding.””
He opened it.
Inside was a birth certificate.
My name was printed beneath the name of a woman I had never heard of.
My recorded mother was listed as Margaret Carter, but a separate adoption registration identified another woman as my biological parent.
I stared at the paper.
“Where did you get this?””
“Dad's safe.””
“You stole it.””
“It's family history, Emily. Something you apparently know very little about.””
He turned toward the officers.
“She has been pretending to be Margaret's biological daughter while secretly pursuing an inheritance she was never entitled to.””
My throat tightened.
“I was raised by Margaret. She was my mother.””
Daniel smiled.
“Legally, perhaps.””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“Daniel, stop.””
He turned sharply.
“Stay out of this.””
“No. You've gone too far.””
He grabbed her wrist.
She pulled away.
I saw the fear in her eyes.
“Don't touch her,” I said.
Daniel released her.
Then he looked at me.
“You want the truth? Fine. Dad knew you weren't Margaret's biological daughter.
He knew Thomas wasn't your father either. That's why he kept all those secrets.””
I felt the world tilt.
“Who was my mother?””
Daniel leaned closer.
“Ask Patricia.””
The sound of a car pulling into the driveway interrupted him.
Mr. Bennett stepped out.
Jonathan followed.
They approached the officers with a folder.
“I'm representing Emily Carter,” Jonathan announced.
“And I have evidence that the document Mr. Carter is presenting is not the operative will.””
Daniel's face hardened.
“You have no authority here.””
Jonathan handed the officers a certified copy of the original trust and a notice of dispute.
“This property is held under a protected family trust. The original agreement prohibits any transfer without the beneficiary's consent. My client is the named residential beneficiary.””
Daniel laughed.
“That's the agreement she stole from Dad.””
“No,” Jonathan replied.
“It was recovered from a concealed vault on the property. Its authenticity is being independently examined.””
He handed over another document.
“And this is a forensic comparison of the signatures on the alleged will.””
The officer examined it.
Daniel's smile faded.
“What comparison?””
Jonathan pointed to the final page.
“The signature on the disputed will was copied from an earlier document. The pressure marks, ink pattern, and letter spacing are inconsistent with Mr. Carter's known signatures.””
Daniel turned toward me.
“You planned this.””
I shook my head.
“No, Daniel. Dad planned it. He just knew you would eventually prove him right.””
The officers asked Daniel to step aside while they reviewed the documents.
He refused.
“You can't do this. I'm the eldest son.””
The older officer spoke firmly.
“Being the eldest son does not establish ownership.””
For the first time, Daniel had no answer.
I turned to Vanessa.
“Come with me.””
She hesitated.
Daniel grabbed the forged will and stepped toward her.
“You're not going anywhere.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“I'm done being afraid of you.””
She walked toward me.
As we entered the house, I heard Daniel shouting behind us.
“You think this is over? You still don't know who you are!””
I stopped.
Then I turned back.
“Maybe not. But I know exactly who you are.””
Inside, Vanessa led me to the kitchen.
She placed a small memory card on the table.
“I took this from Daniel's office.””
“What is it?””
“An audio recording. He made it when he met Patricia last week.””
I stared at her.
“Why didn't you give it to me before?””
“Because I was afraid he would hurt me. But I can't keep protecting him.””
I picked up the card.
“What did they say?””
Vanessa swallowed.
“They discussed your adoption. Patricia told him where the original papers were kept.””
“Where?””
“In the old family chapel.””
I frowned.
“We don't have a chapel.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“Not the one on the property. The chapel where your mother was buried.””
My heart began to pound.
“Why would the adoption papers be there?””
“Because Patricia said your mother left a letter with them.””
I looked at the memory card.
“Did you listen to the recording?””
Vanessa nodded.
“There's something else. Daniel says the adoption was arranged after a woman died. He says your mother made a promise to her.””
I felt cold.
“What woman?””
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.
“I don't know. But Patricia said the woman was your mother's closest friend.””
I took the card upstairs and played it on my laptop.
Daniel's voice came first.
“Once Emily sees the adoption papers, she'll give up the trust.””
Patricia answered.
“She won't give up anything. She's Margaret's daughter in every way that matters.””
“Then tell me who her real mother was.””
Silence.
Then Patricia spoke.
“Her name was Eleanor.””
Daniel laughed.
“Eleanor who?””
Patricia's voice dropped.
“Eleanor Whitaker.””
I stopped breathing.
Thomas's surname.
The recording continued.
“Margaret promised Eleanor she would raise the baby as her own,” Patricia said.
“She promised nobody would ever know.””
Daniel asked, “And Thomas?””
“He wasn't the father. He was the man Eleanor loved.””
I pressed my hand against my mouth.
Then Patricia said the words that changed everything.
“Emily is not Margaret's biological daughter. But she is the child Margaret chose to save.””
The recording ended.
I sat motionless.
My mother had not hidden my identity because she was ashamed of me.
She had hidden it because she had made a promise.
And somewhere in the past, a woman named Eleanor Whitaker had entrusted her child to Margaret.
I looked at Vanessa.
“Where is Patricia now?””
Vanessa checked her phone.
“She sent Daniel a message. She's going to the cemetery tonight.””
I stood.
“Then that's where we're going.””
But as I reached for my coat, another message appeared on my screen.
May you like
It was from Patricia.
*Emily, please come alone. I have your mother's final letter. And if you want to know why she chose you, you need to hear what happened the night Eleanor died.*
