Chapter 11: The Brother Nobody Buried

I didn't believe Richard.

Not anymore.

For twelve years, he had given me explanations that sounded reasonable until someone produced evidence proving they were lies.

Now he was telling me my father's third child was dead.

The same man whose voice had just come through Vanessa's phone.

I looked at her.

"Did your mother ever mention Thomas?""

Vanessa nodded slowly.

"She said I had an older brother. She told me he was sick when he was born and died before I could remember him.""

"Did she show you photographs?""

"No.""

"Did she have a death certificate?""

Vanessa looked confused.

"I don't know.""

Richard interrupted.

"This is going nowhere. We need to leave.""

I turned toward him.

"You're not going anywhere.""

He glanced at the legal documents in Vanessa's hands.

Then he gave a humorless smile.

"You think you're in control because you found some old papers?""

I stepped closer.

"No. I think you're losing control because I found them.""

Richard's expression hardened.

"Your father trusted me with everything.""

"And you betrayed him.""

"I kept this family alive.""

"You stole his company.""

"I built that company with him!""

"And then you tried to steal it from his children.""

Richard looked at Eleanor.

"Ask her what her father did.""

Eleanor folded her arms.

"My father was an honest man.""

Richard laughed.

"Your father moved money through three different companies. He helped Thomas hide assets. He knew about the trust.""

"Then why did he disappear?""

"Because he was afraid.""

Vanessa suddenly stepped between them.

"Enough! I want to know whether my brother is alive.""

Richard looked at her.

"You don't have a brother.""

"Then why did Marcus find his name in the hospital records?""

Richard said nothing.

Vanessa's voice rose.

"Answer me!""

For the first time, she looked less like the woman who had thrown my mother's cookbook away and more like someone discovering that her entire childhood might have been built on a lie.

I took the phone from my pocket and showed her the message.

"Someone wants us at the warehouse tomorrow.""

She read it.

Her hands trembled.

"Thomas.""

"Do you recognize the number?""

She shook her head.

"No. But the message came from the same phone.""

"Then we're going.""

Richard grabbed my shoulder.

"Absolutely not.""

I turned.

"Why?""

"Because it's a trap.""

"Maybe.""

"Then why would you walk into it?""

"Because the person behind it knows something you don't want me to discover.""

Richard released me.

I looked at Amara.

"Can you get the recording?""

She nodded.

"I'll meet you at the bank when it opens.""

"Bring everything.""

She looked toward Richard.

"And don't tell anyone.""

At 8:30 the next morning, we met at First National Bank.

Eleanor arrived first.

My mother came with me.

Vanessa did not.

She had called me twice during the night, but I hadn't answered.

Amara was waiting inside a private meeting room with a small black storage device.

Beside it sat a sealed envelope.

"Is that the recording?"" I asked.

She nodded.

"And the original statement.""

I sat down.

"Let's hear it.""

Amara connected the device to a small speaker.

A burst of static filled the room.

Then my father's voice emerged.

"Richard, I know about the transfers.""

Richard answered.

"You're making a mistake, Thomas.""

"No. I have the documents.""

"You don't understand the consequences.""

"I understand that eight million dollars disappeared from the company.""

A chair scraped.

Then Richard spoke again.

"Daniel agreed to move the money. It was temporary.""

"Where is it now?""

"I don't know.""

"Don't lie to me.""

Silence.

Then my father's voice became quieter.

"Eleanor is entitled to her share. Marcus is entitled to his. I'm not allowing you to steal from my children.""

Richard laughed.

"Your children? You barely know Eleanor.""

"I know enough to know she deserves better than this.""

The recording crackled.

Then another voice entered.

A woman.

"Richard, we have a problem.""

My mother gasped.

I recognized the name from the documents.

Richard's wife.

"Not now," Richard said.

"The money has been moved.""

My father interrupted.

"Where?""

The woman hesitated.

Then she said, "Into the account you asked me to create.""

Richard's voice became furious.

"I told you not to discuss that here!""

My father spoke again.

"Whose account?""

A pause.

Then the woman answered.

"Evelyn Carter.""

My mother covered her mouth.

The recording continued.

"That's impossible," my father said.

"I used her identity," Richard's wife explained.

"The transfers were authorized using her signature.""

My mother began crying.

"I never signed anything.""

I held her hand.

"I know.""

Then Richard spoke.

"Thomas, listen to me. We can fix this.""

"How?""

"Give me the trust documents.""

"No.""

"Then you leave me no choice.""

The recording ended abruptly.

I stared at the device.

"That's it?""

Amara nodded.

"That's all I managed to copy.""

Eleanor looked at my mother.

"So someone used Evelyn's identity to move the money.""

Mom nodded.

"But why would your father write my name in that letter?""

I thought about it.

"He might have believed you were involved because the transfers appeared under your identity.""

"But he knew I wouldn't do that.""

"Maybe he didn't have all the evidence.""

Eleanor opened the envelope.

Inside was a handwritten note from Daniel Whitmore.

She read it silently.

Then her face changed.

"What?"" I asked.

She handed it to me.

Thomas, if you are reading this, I have discovered that Richard has been using my name to move company money. My daughter Vanessa knows nothing about it. Protect her from him.

I looked up.

"Your father wrote this?""

Eleanor nodded.

"Yes.""

The letter continued.

The money is being transferred through a private account belonging to a child. A child whose identity was changed after birth.

I felt my heart pound.

I read the final sentence.

The boy is alive. His name is Thomas Whitmore. But Richard believes he is dead.

My mother slowly stood.

"Then the message...""

"Someone knows where he is," I said.

Eleanor looked at the letter.

"Or someone wants us to believe they do.""

Amara pointed toward the bottom of the page.

"There's a date.""

I examined it.

November 13.

The day before my father's accident.

I turned the letter over.

There was a second note.

If anything happens to me, the boy is with the only person I trust.

A name followed.

*Dr. Samuel Bennett.*

The same hospital administrator who had authorized Richard's access to my father's room.

I looked at Amara.

"Was Bennett married?""

She shook her head.

"Not that I know of.""

"Did he have children?""

"One daughter, I believe.""

Eleanor suddenly looked up.

"Wait.""

She opened her handbag and pulled out a photograph.

It showed a younger woman standing beside Dr. Bennett.

I recognized her.

The nurse from the hospital photograph.

The same woman standing behind Richard twelve years earlier.

Eleanor turned the photograph over.

"Her name was Grace Bennett.""

I stared.

"Where is she now?""

Eleanor looked at the back of the picture.

"She works at a medical records center in Cincinnati.""

My phone vibrated.

Another message.

*I told you to come alone. Why did you bring the others?*

I looked at the screen.

Then another message arrived.

*Richard is already here. He has the boy.*

I stood so quickly my chair fell backward.

"Marcus?"" my mother asked.

I showed her the phone.

Eleanor grabbed the photograph.

"We need to get to the warehouse.""

Amara shook her head.

"Wait. There's something else.""

She took a second recording from her bag.

"This is the part I couldn't play yesterday.""

I stared at her.

"You said the first recording was incomplete.""

"It was. I found another copy last night.""

She pressed play.

My father's voice filled the room.

"If Richard ever finds Thomas, he will use the boy to control the trust.""

Then another voice answered.

It was a child's voice.

Small.

Frightened.

"Daddy, why is that man following us?""

My blood turned cold.

The child sounded exactly like the man on the phone.

Then my father's voice whispered:

"Because he's afraid you'll find out who your real father is.""

The recording stopped.

I looked at Eleanor.

She looked back at me.

Neither of us spoke.

Then my phone rang.

The caller ID displayed the same name.

*THOMAS CARTER.*

This time, I answered immediately.

A man's voice spoke.

"Marcus, don't come to the warehouse.""

"Where is Thomas?""

The voice went quiet.

May you like

Then he said:

"You're looking at the wrong brother.""
