Chapter 13: The Father Who Came Back From the Dead

The metal door opened slowly.

A man's hand appeared first.

Then a shoulder.

Then a familiar face emerged from the darkness.

He was older than the man in the photographs. His hair had turned almost completely gray, and deep lines crossed his forehead. But his eyes were unmistakable.

Vanessa dropped the flash drive.

"Dad?""

Daniel Whitmore stepped into the light.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

My mother made a small, broken sound.

Richard lowered his gun slightly.

"Daniel.""

The older man looked at him.

"Put it down, Richard.""

Richard laughed.

"You've been dead for twelve years. You don't get to give me orders.""

Daniel's expression didn't change.

"Neither do you.""

I stared at him.

This was the man I had been told died two days after my father's accident.

The man whose daughter had spent her entire life believing she was an only child.

The man who had supposedly helped my father establish the family trust.

And apparently, my biological father.

I couldn't find the words.

Finally, I managed one question.

"Are you my father?""

Daniel looked directly at me.

His eyes filled with tears.

"Biologically, yes.""

I felt something inside me break.

"Why?""

He lowered his head.

"Because I was a coward.""

My mother closed her eyes.

Daniel continued.

"Your mother and I were young when we met. We loved each other, but I was already involved in business dealings that could have destroyed both our families. When Evelyn became pregnant, I was terrified.""

My mother shook her head.

"Don't make it sound like I didn't know the truth.""

Daniel looked at her.

"I know.""

He turned back to me.

"Thomas knew you weren't his biological son. But he wanted to raise you. He loved you before you were even born.""

I swallowed.

"Then why did you disappear?""

Daniel's voice cracked.

"Because I let Richard convince me that staying away was the only way to protect you.""

Richard laughed.

"That's a beautiful story.""

Daniel turned toward him.

"You arranged the accident.""

Richard's face hardened.

"You have no proof.""

Daniel reached inside his jacket and pulled out a small black recorder.

"I have twelve years of it.""

Richard raised his gun.

"Give me that.""

Daniel didn't move.

"Thomas Carter discovered the missing money. He discovered that you had been transferring company assets through shell corporations. He also found out you were using Vanessa's mother to move funds through Evelyn's identity.""

"She agreed to help.""

"She didn't know what you were doing.""

Richard laughed.

"She knew enough.""

Daniel shook his head.

"She found out the truth shortly before she died. You threatened her. You told her that if she exposed you, Vanessa would lose everything.""

Vanessa began crying.

"Mom knew?""

Daniel nodded.

"She tried to stop him.""

Richard's expression became vicious.

"She should have minded her own business.""

Vanessa stepped forward.

"You told me my mother died because she was sick.""

Richard looked at her.

"She was sick.""

"Was she murdered?""

He didn't answer.

Vanessa's face collapsed.

"Did you kill my mother?""

Richard looked away.

That was enough.

I felt my fists tighten.

"You're going to prison.""

Richard laughed.

"Not before you hear the truth about your precious family.""

He pointed his gun toward my mother.

"Tell him, Evelyn.""

She shook her head.

"Richard, please.""

"Tell him why Thomas Carter took the blame for another man's child.""

My mother looked at me.

Her lips trembled.

"Daniel and I had an affair before I married Thomas.""

I stared at her.

"I know.""

"No, Marcus. You don't understand. Daniel wanted to take you away when you were born. He believed he could give you a better life.""

Daniel closed his eyes.

"That's not how it happened.""

My mother continued.

"Thomas found out. I thought he would leave me. Instead, he held you in his arms and said you were his son because he had chosen to love you.""

Tears filled her eyes.

"He told me biology didn't make a father. Being there did.""

I looked at Daniel.

He was crying silently.

My mother continued.

"Thomas asked Daniel to stay away. Daniel agreed. But when you were six months old, he came back.""

Daniel shook his head.

"I came to apologize.""

"And you brought Richard with you.""

Richard interrupted.

"Enough.""

My mother looked at him.

"No. You wanted everyone to know the truth. Let them hear it.""

She turned toward me.

"That night, Richard threatened Thomas. He said he would expose the affair and destroy our family. Thomas refused to cooperate. Daniel promised to help him.""

I looked at Daniel.

"Then what happened?""

Daniel's voice was barely audible.

"Richard arranged the accident.""

Richard raised the gun.

"Shut up!""

Daniel continued.

"Thomas survived. Richard and Dr. Bennett used the hospital to make sure he didn't leave alive.

I discovered what happened afterward. I knew Richard would come after me next.""

"So you disappeared.""

Daniel nodded.

"I thought Vanessa would be safer if everyone believed I was dead.""

Vanessa stepped forward.

"You let me bury an empty coffin?""

Daniel looked at his daughter.

"I'm sorry.""

She slapped him.

The sound echoed through the warehouse.

"Sorry? I spent twelve years visiting your grave!""

Daniel didn't defend himself.

He simply stood there and accepted it.

Then Richard moved.

He raised the gun toward Daniel.

But before he could fire, Thomas lunged at him.

The weapon discharged.

The bullet struck a wooden beam.

I rushed forward.

Richard and Thomas crashed against the floor. The gun slid beneath a workbench.

Vanessa screamed.

Daniel grabbed Richard's arm while I pulled Thomas away.

Richard punched Daniel in the face.

"Get off me!""

Daniel stumbled backward.

Richard reached beneath his jacket.

I saw the movement.

"Daniel!""

A second weapon appeared.

Before Richard could raise it, Vanessa picked up a heavy metal wrench from the workbench and struck his wrist.

The gun fell.

Thomas kicked it away.

I grabbed Richard by the collar and forced him against the floor.

"Don't move!""

He struggled.

"Get off me!""

I pressed my knee against his back.

"You're finished.""

Richard began laughing.

"You think this changes anything?""

I looked at him.

"It changes everything.""

He turned his head.

"You still don't understand, Marcus. I didn't steal your father's company because I wanted money.""

"Then why?""

His eyes met mine.

"Because Thomas Carter was going to give everything to his children.""

I stared at him.

Richard smiled.

"And one of those children was going to inherit something far more valuable than money.""

"What?""

He looked toward the metal door.

"The original ownership agreement.""

Then sirens sounded outside.

Richard's smile disappeared.

Eleanor stepped forward, holding her phone.

"I called the police before we entered.""

Richard's face twisted.

"You little—"

She cut him off.

"Your twelve-year secret is over.""

Two officers entered the warehouse with their weapons drawn.

They ordered everyone to step away.

As they handcuffed Richard, he looked at me.

"You'll regret opening that door.""

I turned toward the hidden compartment.

Inside sat a steel box.

And on top of it was a sealed envelope bearing my father's handwriting.

*For the son I chose.*

I picked it up.

May you like

My hands were shaking.

Because for the first time, I understood that the final truth might hurt more than everything we had discovered.
