Chapter 14: The Last Person I Suspected
Detective Morris arranged for Dr. Bennett to meet us at the police station.
He arrived at noon carrying a thick medical file.
He looked exhausted.
His usual confidence was gone.
“Marcus,” he said quietly.
I didn't offer him my hand.
“Explain what you meant.””
Dr. Bennett sat across from me.
“Your father was my patient for several years. He had a heart condition that required regular monitoring. Shortly before his death, I noticed unusual changes in his medication records.””
“Who made them?””
“Someone using my credentials.””
“Your credentials?””
“Yes.””
I stared at him.
“You expect me to believe someone stole your identity?””
“No. I know who did it.””
He opened the file.
Inside were copies of medical prescriptions, hospital notes, and pharmacy records.
The name attached to the unauthorized changes was Margaret Hale.
My mother.
I felt my jaw tighten.
“Why would she do that?””
Dr. Bennett took a breath.
“Your father was taking medication for a cardiac condition. Someone replaced part of his prescription with a substance that could cause dangerous complications when combined with his existing medication.””
Detective Morris leaned forward.
“Do you have laboratory confirmation?””
“Yes. I preserved samples after I noticed the irregularities.””
“Why didn't you report this immediately?””
Dr. Bennett looked ashamed.
“Because I received a threat.””
“From whom?””
“Arthur Bennett.””
I looked at him.
“What did he threaten?””
“My daughter.””
Silence.
Dr. Bennett continued.
“He told me that if I reported the medication changes, my daughter would lose her medical school scholarship. Then he sent me photographs of her leaving campus.””
I clenched my fists.
“So you stayed quiet.””
“Yes.””
“While my father died?””
Dr. Bennett closed his eyes.
“Yes.””
I looked away.
The pattern was becoming unbearable.
Everyone had known something.
Everyone had been afraid.
And my father had paid the price.
Detective Morris collected the documents.
“We'll need a formal statement.””
Dr. Bennett nodded.
“Of course.””
Then he looked at me.
“Marcus, there's something else.””
I turned.
“More?””
He hesitated.
“Your father came to see me the day before he died. He told me he believed Margaret was planning to disappear.””
“Why?””
“He said she had discovered the full extent of Arthur's involvement. He believed she was trying to protect you by cooperating with him.””
I swallowed.
“Did he know she was changing his medication?””
“I think he suspected.””
“Then why didn't he report her?””
Dr. Bennett looked down.
“Because he still loved her.””
I closed my eyes.
That sounded like Thomas Hale.
A man who had spent his life trying to protect people, even when they were destroying him.
At four that afternoon, Detective Morris received a call.
She listened for several seconds.
Then her expression changed.
“Where?””
She wrote down an address.
When she ended the call, she looked at me.
“We found Margaret.””
My heart jumped.
“Where?””
“At a private residence outside the city. She has agreed to surrender.””
I stood.
“I want to see her.””
“Marcus, I don't recommend that.””
“She's my mother.””
“She's also a suspect in your father's death.””
I looked at her.
“I understand.””
She studied me.
Then she nodded.
“We'll arrange a supervised meeting.””
My mother looked smaller than I remembered.
She sat in a plain interview room wearing a beige sweater.
Her hands were folded neatly on the table.
When I entered, she looked up.
“Marcus.””
I sat opposite her.
For a long time, neither of us spoke.
Then I placed the medical records on the table.
“Did you change Dad's medication?””
She stared at the papers.
“Yes.””
The answer came so quietly that it almost sounded like a breath.
I felt my chest tighten.
“Why?””
“Arthur told me Thomas was planning to send you away.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“He said your father wanted to remove you from the company and transfer control to Julian. He convinced me that Thomas was becoming dangerous.””
“So you poisoned him?””
She began crying.
“I didn't intend to kill him.””
“What did you intend?””
“To make him sick. To delay his decisions. Arthur said it would give us time.””
I stared at her.
“You altered his heart medication.””
“Yes.””
“You knew he could die.””
“I didn't think it would happen so quickly.””
I leaned forward.
“Did you love him?””
She covered her mouth.
“Yes.””
“Then how could you do it?””
She looked at me with desperate eyes.
“Because I was terrified of losing you.””
I shook my head.
“You didn't protect me. You helped destroy me.””
“I know.””
“You let Julian sabotage my car.””
“I thought it would be temporary.””
“You let Vanessa push my wheelchair toward the stairs.””
“I didn't know about that.””
“You knew enough.””
She began sobbing.
I looked at the woman who had once held my hand through every childhood nightmare.
Now I couldn't recognize her.
“Did Dad know?””
She nodded.
“He confronted me the night he died.””
“What happened?””
“He had discovered the medication changes. He told me he was going to the police.””
I closed my eyes.
“Then?””
“I begged him not to. I told him Arthur would destroy us.””
“And he refused?””
“Yes.””
She wiped her cheeks.
“He said he would rather lose everything than lose his son.””
I looked at her.
“What did you do?””
“I left.””
“You left him dying?””
“He was still standing when I walked out.””
I felt sick.
“Did you call an ambulance?””
“No.””
“Why?””
“Because I was afraid the doctors would discover what I had done.””
I stared at her.
My father had been alive.
He had needed help.
And his wife had walked away.
I stood.
“I'm done.””
She grabbed my hand.
“Marcus, please.””
I pulled away.
“Don't.””
She began crying harder.
“I was wrong. I know I was wrong. But I need you to understand that I never wanted you dead.””
I looked at her.
“That's what everyone says after they try to kill me.””
I turned toward the door.
Then she spoke again.
“Marcus, wait.””
I stopped.
“There is one more thing.””
I didn't turn around.
“Your father knew Arthur wasn't your only biological father.””
My stomach tightened.
“What does that mean?””
She swallowed.
“Arthur wasn't the man who fathered you.””
I turned slowly.
“What?””
“Thomas was your biological father.””
I stared at her.
“But you told me—”
“I lied.””
She reached into her handbag and removed an old medical report.
It was dated thirty-one years earlier.
The report confirmed that Thomas Hale had undergone fertility treatment before my birth.
He had been told he could father a child.
Arthur had helped arrange the surrogacy because he was involved in the medical business at the time.
The supposed biological connection between me and Arthur had been fabricated.
“Why would Arthur lie about that?””
My mother looked down.
“Because he wanted you to believe you were his heir. He wanted to control you through your identity.””
I stared at the report.
“Then Ethan?””
“Ethan is Thomas's biological son too. Your father was his biological father.””
I thought about Ethan.
About his quiet loyalty.
About the way he had refused to claim the company.
My father had known.
He had known the truth about both of us.
And he had chosen to raise me as his son because I was his son.
I felt tears burn behind my eyes.
“Why didn't you tell me?””
My mother shook her head.
“Because Arthur had falsified the original records. He wanted to use the confusion to destroy the family.””
I looked at her one last time.
“Then tell the police everything.””
She nodded.
“I will.””
As I reached the door, she called my name.
“Marcus?””
I turned.
She looked at me through tears.
“Your father left something for you. Something he asked me to give you only if you ever learned the truth.””
She slid a small envelope across the table.
Inside was a photograph of my father holding me as a baby.
On the back, he had written:
My son. My blood. My greatest gift.
I pressed the photograph against my chest.
For the first time since this nightmare began, I knew one thing for certain.
Thomas Hale had been my father.
Not because of a document.
Not because of genetics.
Because he had chosen me.
And that was something Arthur Bennett could never take away.
That evening, Detective Morris called.
“Marcus, we have a problem.””
“What now?””
“Arthur Bennett has been released on temporary medical grounds. His attorney claims the evidence against him is circumstantial.””
I closed my eyes.
“Where is he?””
“His private residence.””
“Keep him under surveillance.””
“We are.””
Then she added:
“There's something else. Julian has requested a meeting with you.””
“Why?””
“He says he has the original recording proving who ordered your accident.””
I looked at the photograph of my father.
“Tell him I'll meet him.””
Detective Morris hesitated.
“Are you sure?””
“Yes.””
Because I had finally understood something.
May you like
My family had spent years hiding behind secrets.
And the only way to end it was to bring every last one into the light.
