Chapter 7: The Father I Never Knew

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Julian stood beneath the driveway lights, holding the hospital document like a weapon.

Daniel was surrounded by two security officers.

Vanessa was crying near the entrance.

And I sat in my wheelchair, staring at the photograph of my father holding a newborn baby.

“Explain yourself,” I said.

Julian smiled.

“Which part?””

“The part where you tell me my entire life has been a lie.””

He looked down at the photograph.

“Your father wasn't always the honorable businessman everyone remembers. He had secrets. Plenty of them.””

“Put the document down.””

“Why? Afraid of what you'll discover?””

One of the officers stepped forward.

“Sir, place the briefcase on the ground.””

Julian ignored him.

“Do you know why Dad always treated you differently?””

I clenched my jaw.

“He raised me.””

“That wasn't what I asked.””

Julian opened the document.

“Your mother couldn't have children.””

I felt the blood drain from my face.

“What?””

“After she suffered a miscarriage, the doctors told her she would probably never carry another child. Your father wanted a family so badly that he arranged something privately.””

I looked at Daniel.

He stared at the ground.

Julian continued.

“You were born through a surrogate. The woman who carried you wasn't your biological mother.””

I shook my head.

“My mother was Margaret Hale.””

“She raised you. She loved you. But she wasn't the woman who gave birth to you.””

The words felt unreal.

I remembered my mother's hands fixing my school uniform. Her voice singing beside my bed when I had nightmares. The way she sat beside me in the hospital when I broke my arm.

None of that could be erased by a piece of paper.

“You're lying,” I said.

Julian shrugged.

“Then ask Daniel.””

I turned toward him.

“Is it true?””

Daniel looked up.

“Marcus, this isn't the time.””

“Answer me!””

He closed his eyes.

“Yes.””

The admission landed like a physical blow.

I looked down at my hands.

“Who was she?””

Daniel hesitated.

Julian answered for him.

“Her name was Eleanor Reeves.””

I stared.

“Reeves?””

Julian nodded toward Daniel.

“His mother.””

The driveway seemed to tilt beneath me.

Daniel finally spoke.

“My mother was a surrogate. She carried you for Margaret and your father. She was paid, and the arrangement was completely legal.””

“Then why didn't anyone tell me?””

“Your father wanted to protect your mother's feelings,” Daniel replied.

“Margaret raised you as her own. She was your mother in every way that mattered.””

I looked at the photograph again.

The hospital document carried a date.

My birthday.

Below it was a handwritten note.

Child transferred to Margaret and Thomas Hale.

My entire childhood suddenly seemed to rearrange itself.

“Did my mother know?”” I asked.

Daniel nodded.

“She knew from the beginning.””

I swallowed.

“Did she love me?””

Daniel stepped closer.

“Marcus, she loved you more than anything.””

Julian laughed.

“How touching. Now let's discuss the more interesting secret.””

He pulled another document from the briefcase.

“This is the original surrogacy agreement. Dad paid Daniel's mother through a private account. Guess which account later became the source of the money used to buy Daniel's loyalty?””

Daniel lunged forward.

“That's enough!””

The officers restrained him.

Julian stepped backward.

“There's your explanation, Marcus. Daniel didn't become your lawyer by coincidence. His family was tied to yours long before he ever entered your father's office.””

I looked at Daniel.

“Did you know about Julian's financial crimes?””

“No.””

“Did you know about Vanessa?””

“No.””

“Did you know who arranged my accident?””

Daniel looked directly into my eyes.

“I knew Richard Cole had been paid to sabotage your vehicle. I didn't know who had hired him.””

“That's not an answer.””

His face tightened.

“I was investigating your father's death. I believed the person responsible was connected to the company.””

“Then why didn't you tell me?””

“Because I was trying to protect you.””

Julian laughed again.

“He always has an excuse.””

I turned toward my brother.

“Who hired Richard?””

Julian's smile faded.

He looked at Daniel.

Then at Vanessa.

Finally, he lowered his voice.

“Your father.””

Nobody spoke.

I felt my stomach twist.

“That's impossible.””

“Your father knew you were about to discover the money transfers. He wanted to scare you away from the company. Richard was supposed to disable the car's braking system just enough to force you into a hospital stay.””

I stared at him.

“You're saying Dad arranged my accident?””

Julian nodded.

“He wanted you out of the business temporarily. He never intended for you to be permanently disabled.””

I shook my head.

“Why would he do that?””

“Because he knew what I was doing. He wanted time to gather evidence without you interfering.””

Daniel suddenly spoke.

“That's not true.””

Julian turned.

“You don't know what you're talking about.””

“I saw the original payment records. Thomas Hale never hired Richard Cole.””

Julian's expression hardened.

Daniel continued.

“The payment came from Northbridge Holdings. The same company you controlled.””

Julian laughed.

“Prove it.””

“I already have.””

He looked toward me.

“Marcus, the file your father left contains the transfer authorization. The payment was made two days before your accident.””

I stared at Julian.

“Did you hire Richard?””

He didn't answer.

Instead, he looked at Vanessa.

“Tell him.””

Vanessa was trembling.

“Julian, stop.””

“Tell him what happened.””

She shook her head.

Julian's voice became louder.

“Tell him who was supposed to be driving that night!””

I turned toward her.

“What is he talking about?””

Vanessa covered her mouth.

Then she whispered, “Me.””

I felt my blood turn cold.

“What?””

“You weren't supposed to be in the car.””

Julian stepped forward.

“The original plan was to damage the brakes while Vanessa was driving. She would suffer a minor accident, and everyone would blame the weather. But she changed the plan.””

Vanessa began crying.

“I didn't know it would happen like that!””

“You knew enough,” Julian snapped.

I looked at her.

“Why was I in the car?””

She shook her head.

“Because you discovered the transfers. You told me you were going to confront Julian. I panicked. I thought if you were injured, you would stop investigating.””

I stared at her.

“You knew the brakes had been tampered with?””

She didn't answer.

That was enough.

One of the officers moved toward her.

“Ma'am, you're coming with us.””

Vanessa collapsed onto the driveway.

Julian suddenly threw the briefcase toward the officers and ran.

Two security guards tackled him before he reached the gate.

The hospital document scattered across the pavement.

Daniel crouched to collect it.

I watched him carefully.

“Daniel.””

He looked up.

“Yes?””

“Why did you really become my lawyer?””

His face softened.

“Because my mother made me promise something before she died.””

“What?””

He held the document against his chest.

“She told me that if I ever met the child she carried, I should make sure he never believed he was unwanted.””

I looked away.

For the first time that night, I couldn't find words.

Then Daniel added something that changed the direction of everything.

“Marcus, there's one more document in that briefcase. Julian doesn't know I found it.””

He reached inside and removed a folded sheet.

It was a letter from my mother.

The date was three days before her death.

And the first sentence read:

My son, if you ever discover who gave birth to you, please understand that I chose you every single day.

I held the letter against my chest.

But before I could read further, Daniel's phone rang.

He answered.

His expression changed.

“What?””

He listened for several seconds.

Then he looked at me.

“Marcus, the police have just searched Richard Cole's house.””

“And?””

“They found a recording.””

“What recording?””

May you like

Daniel swallowed.

“A recording of your father's final conversation.””
