Chapter 5: The Secret Behind Leo’s Birth
Grant read the message three times.
Not because he didn’t understand the words.
Because he refused to.
*Ask Vanessa who the baby really belonged to.*
The nursery suddenly felt smaller.
The walls that had once held memories now felt like they were closing in around him.
He looked at the photograph in his hand.
Emily.
Holding newborn Leo.
Smiling.
A mother who was supposed to be gone.
A mother who had apparently been fighting to return.
Grant’s fingers tightened around the paper.
“Who sent this?””
Clara stood near the doorway, holding Leo’s hand.
“I don’t know.””
Grant looked at the open window.
The cold night air moved through the room.
Someone had been here.
Someone had entered the one room nobody was supposed to enter.
Someone had left evidence.
And someone wanted him to question everything.
Leo looked up.
“Daddy?””
Grant immediately softened.
He walked over and knelt.
“Hey.””
“Why are you looking at Mommy’s picture?””
Grant glanced at the photograph.
“Because I’m trying to understand something.””
Leo looked confused.
“Is Mommy coming home?””
That question hurt more than anything else.
Grant swallowed.
“I think she might.””
Leo’s eyes widened.
“Really?””
Grant nodded slowly.
“But I need you to tell me something.””
“What?””
“Did Vanessa ever tell you anything about when you were born?””
Leo looked down.
“No.””
“Nothing?””
The boy shook his head.
“Mommy said babies don’t remember things.””
Grant looked at Clara.
She looked back at him.
Both of them knew.
A five-year-old did not invent fear.
A five-year-old did not know how to hide a secret that complicated.
Someone had been feeding him pieces of a story.
Pieces designed to control him.
Grant stood.
“Where is Vanessa?””
Mrs. Dalton answered from the hallway.
“She left.””
Grant turned.
“When?””
“While you were upstairs.””
His expression hardened.
“She left the property?””
Mrs. Dalton nodded.
“She took a suitcase.””
Clara frowned.
“A suitcase?””
Grant looked toward the front door.
She wasn’t running because she was scared.
She was running because she knew what was coming.
“Get the car.””
Mrs. Dalton hesitated.
“Mr. Ashford…”
Grant looked at her.
“What?””
“There is something else.””
The room became silent.
“What?””
Mrs. Dalton lowered her voice.
“Mrs. Ashford wasn’t the only person who went into the nursery.””
Grant stared.
“When?””
“Three weeks ago.””
“Who?””
Mrs. Dalton looked uncomfortable.
“Daniel Mercer.””
Grant closed his eyes.
His brother.
Again.
“What was he doing here?””
“I don’t know.””
“You saw him.””
“Yes.””
“Then tell me.””
Mrs. Dalton swallowed.
“He was holding a box.””
“What kind of box?””
“A wooden one.””
Grant looked toward the nursery.
A wooden box.
The same room.
The same secrets.
“What happened to it?””
“I don’t know.””
Clara stepped forward.
“Mrs. Dalton, did Vanessa know he was there?””
The housekeeper nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
Grant looked at her.
“You’re sure?””
“I heard them arguing.””
“What did they say?””
Mrs. Dalton looked afraid.
“I only heard part.””
“Tell me.””
She looked at Leo.
Then away.
“Daniel said, ‘You promised me the child would never find out.’”
Grant went still.
Leo.
The child.
Not my son.
Not Leo.
The child.
A chill moved through him.
“What did Vanessa say?””
Mrs. Dalton whispered:
“She said, ‘He belongs to me now.’”
Twenty minutes later, Grant stood outside the guest cottage at the edge of the property.
Vanessa’s car was parked outside.
The engine was still warm.
She hadn’t escaped.
She was waiting.
Grant opened the door.
The cottage was dark except for one lamp.
Vanessa sat on the couch.
A suitcase rested beside her.
She looked exhausted.
Older.
For the first time, Grant saw someone who wasn’t in control.
“You came.””
Grant closed the door behind him.
“Tell me about Leo.””
Vanessa looked away.
“Where is he?””
“Safe.””
“With Clara?””
“Yes.””
A bitter smile crossed her face.
“You trust her now?””
“I trust the person who saved him.””
Vanessa looked down.
“Of course you do.””
Grant placed the photograph on the table.
Vanessa saw it.
Her expression changed.
“You found that.””
“Who gave birth to Leo?””
Silence.
“Vanessa.””
She closed her eyes.
“Grant…”
“Answer me.””
Her hands trembled.
“I was his mother.””
“No.””
His voice was quiet.
But firm.
“Not biologically.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“You really believe her?””
“I believe the evidence.””
“What evidence?””
“Emily’s email.””
Vanessa laughed softly.
“You think Emily told you the truth?””
“Did she?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
That was enough.
Grant stepped closer.
“What happened five years ago?””
Vanessa looked toward the window.
“When Emily was pregnant, she changed.””
Grant said nothing.
“She became paranoid.””
“About what?””
“About everyone.””
“That doesn’t answer the question.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“She was afraid Daniel would take Leo.””
Grant froze.
“Why?””
Vanessa’s eyes filled.
“Because Daniel was the father.””
The room went silent.
Grant stared.
“No.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“I didn’t want to tell you.””
“Because?””
“Because you loved him.””
Grant stepped backward.
“No.””
“You raised Leo as your own.””
“No.””
“Grant—”
“No.””
The denial came louder.
He walked toward the door.
But Vanessa continued.
“She was going to leave.””
Grant stopped.
“What?””
“Emily found out.””
“Found out what?””
“That Daniel had been lying to both of you.””
Grant turned slowly.
Vanessa continued.
“Daniel wasn’t trying to take Leo from Emily. He wanted the child because of inheritance.””
Grant stared.
“What are you saying?””
“Your father’s trust.””
His face changed.
“The Ashford family trust?””
Vanessa nodded.
“Only a biological Ashford heir could control it.””
Grant felt sick.
“Leo.””
“Yes.””
Vanessa whispered.
“Daniel knew.””
Grant looked at her.
“And you?””
Vanessa looked away.
“I knew later.””
“When?””
“After the accident.””
The word hung there.
The accident.
The one that killed Emily.
Or supposedly killed Emily.
Grant’s voice dropped.
“You were there.””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
“Were you?””
Her silence was enough.
Grant’s face hardened.
“What happened?””
Vanessa wiped her eyes.
“I went to meet Daniel.””
“Why?””
“He said he had proof Emily was leaving you.””
Grant laughed bitterly.
“Of course.””
“I thought I was helping you.””
“You thought?””
“I didn’t know he planned to hurt her.””
Grant stared.
“What did you see?””
Vanessa’s voice became smaller.
“The car.””
“What about it?””
“It went off the road.””
“Was Emily alive?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“Yes.””
The word destroyed whatever hope remained.
“She was alive.””
Grant’s hands curled into fists.
“And you let everyone think she was dead?””
Vanessa started crying.
“I was scared.””
“You were scared?””
“He told me if I talked, I would lose Leo.””
Grant’s eyes narrowed.
“Because he knew Leo was his son?””
“Yes.””
A long silence followed.
Then Grant asked the question that had been burning inside him.
“Why did you tie Leo up today?””
Vanessa looked away.
“I found out Emily contacted him.””
“Contacted who?””
“You.””
Grant froze.
“When?””
“Last week.””
“How?””
“Through a message.””
“And you blocked it?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
Grant understood.
“You were afraid she would come back.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“Because if Emily returned, everyone would know.””
“Know what?””
Her lips trembled.
“The truth about Leo.””
Grant stared.
“Which is?””
Vanessa whispered:
“Leo is not Daniel’s son.””
The room went completely still.
Grant blinked.
“What?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“Daniel believed he was.””
“But he wasn’t?””
“No.””
“Then who is his father?””
Vanessa looked terrified.
Not of Grant.
Of the answer.
Before she could speak, the cottage window shattered.
Glass exploded across the floor.
Grant grabbed Vanessa and pulled her down.
A gunshot echoed outside.
Vanessa screamed.
Grant looked toward the broken window.
Someone was standing in the darkness beyond the glass.
Watching.
Then Grant’s phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
A woman’s voice came through.
A voice he had not heard in five years.
A voice that made his entire body freeze.
“Grant.””
He couldn’t speak.
The voice continued.
“I’m sorry you had to learn this way.””
His hand tightened around the phone.
“Emily?””
A pause.
Then:
“I never abandoned you.””
Grant’s eyes filled.
Outside, the shadow disappeared.
Emily whispered:
“But Leo was never the reason they tried to kill me.””
Grant held his breath.
“Then what was?””
May you like
Her answer came quietly.
“The reason was you.””
