Chapter 9: The Daughter Hidden From the World

Grant forgot how to breathe.

The cemetery disappeared.

The fog.

The graves.

The cold air.

Even the sound of Daniel lowering the gun.

Everything faded until there was only one sentence echoing in his mind.

*I'm your daughter.*

The young woman standing beside Emily looked to be in her early twenties.

She had Emily’s eyes.

That was the first thing Grant noticed.

The same deep brown eyes that had looked at him across crowded rooms, through hospital windows, and from the photographs he kept hidden in his office.

But there was something else.

Something familiar.

The slight tilt of her head.

The way she pressed her lips together when she was afraid.

A gesture Grant had seen in the mirror.

“No,” he whispered.

Emily stepped forward.

“Grant…”

“No.””

His voice cracked.

“You have a daughter?””

Emily’s eyes filled with tears.

“Yes.””

Grant looked at the young woman.

“Who is she?””

The girl swallowed.

“My name is Ava.””

The name meant nothing.

But the pain in Emily’s expression meant everything.

Grant turned toward her.

“You knew?””

Emily nodded.

“I did.””

“How long?””

“Since before Leo was born.””

The answer hit harder than he expected.

Grant took a step back.

“You had another child?””

Ava looked down.

Emily reached for her hand.

“I didn’t know how to tell you.””

Grant laughed quietly.

Not because anything was funny.

Because his mind couldn’t process the amount of betrayal.

“You didn’t know how to tell me?””

Emily looked away.

“Grant—”

“You disappeared.””

“I was protecting you.””

“You let me mourn you.””

“I had no choice.””

“You let me raise Leo believing our family was complete.””

Emily closed her eyes.

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

His voice broke.

“You don’t know what it feels like to stand beside a grave that isn’t real.””

The words hurt her.

He saw it.

But he couldn’t stop.

“I talked to you there.””

Emily started crying.

“I know.””

“You know?””

She nodded.

“I watched.””

Grant froze.

“What?””

Emily looked down.

“After I escaped, I came back.””

“When?””

“On Leo’s birthday.””

Grant stared.

“That day…”

He remembered.

Every year, on Leo’s birthday, he visited Emily’s grave alone.

He would sit there.

Talk.

Apologize.

Tell her about the little things Leo had done.

Emily covered her mouth.

“I heard you tell me you were sorry.””

Grant looked away.

His anger weakened for one second.

Then reality returned.

“Ava.””

The young woman looked at him.

“Where have you been?””

Ava’s eyes moved to Emily.

“I was hidden.””

“From who?””

Daniel answered.

“From everyone.””

Grant turned.

Daniel was still holding the gun.

But his arm was lowered now.

“You really thought the only secret was Leo?””

Grant’s eyes hardened.

“Shut up.””

Daniel smiled.

“That’s the problem with you, Grant. You always believed your life was simple because you only saw what people allowed you to see.””

“You kidnapped my son.””

“I brought him here.””

“You scared him.””

“I kept him alive.””

Grant stepped forward.

Daniel raised the gun slightly.

Clara immediately moved between them.

“Stop.””

Everyone looked at her.

She stood there trembling.

But she didn’t move.

“He’s a child.””

Daniel’s expression changed.

“You don’t understand.””

“No.””

Clara’s voice became stronger.

“I understand exactly.””

She looked at Leo.

“He trusted you.””

Daniel looked away.

For a moment, he looked almost ashamed.

Then it disappeared.

Grant noticed.

Daniel wasn’t a monster without feelings.

That was what made him dangerous.

He could justify anything.

“Let Leo go.””

Daniel looked at Grant.

“If I do, everything gets buried again.””

“No.””

Grant looked at Emily.

Then Ava.

Then Leo.

“Not this time.””

They moved into the old cemetery chapel because Emily insisted the truth had to be explained somewhere safe.

The police were on their way.

Grant had secretly sent his location through his phone before following Daniel.

Nobody knew.

Not Daniel.

Not Vanessa.

Not even Emily.

For the first time in years, Grant had learned not to trust silence.

Leo sat beside Clara.

He refused to leave her side.

Emily sat across from Grant.

Ava sat beside her.

Vanessa stood near the wall.

Alone.

Grant looked at Emily.

“Start from the beginning.””

Emily nodded.

“I met Ava when I was nineteen.””

Grant frowned.

“You were in college.””

“Yes.””

“Before me?””

“Yes.””

Grant looked at Ava.

“Her father?””

Emily hesitated.

Ava answered.

“My father died before I was born.””

Grant looked back at Emily.

“You raised her?””

Emily shook her head.

“No.””

Her voice became heavy.

“I wasn’t allowed to.””

“Why?””

Emily looked toward Daniel.

“Because of your family.””

Grant followed her gaze.

Daniel said nothing.

Emily continued.

“Your father’s company had a succession problem.””

Grant frowned.

“What does that have to do with Ava?””

“Everything.””

She took a breath.

“Your grandfather created a rule. The family trust could only pass to a direct Ashford descendant.””

Grant nodded slowly.

“I know.””

“No.””

Emily looked at him.

“You know the version they gave you.””

Silence.

“The real version required the oldest living child.””

Grant stared.

“What?””

Emily nodded.

“Not the oldest son.””

Ava looked down.

“The oldest child.””

Grant felt a cold sensation move through him.

“Ava.””

Emily nodded.

“She was born first.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“And that meant she controlled everything.””

Grant looked at him.

“You wanted the inheritance.””

“I wanted to protect the company.””

“You wanted power.””

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“I wanted what your father promised me.””

Grant laughed bitterly.

“My father promised you nothing.””

Daniel’s expression changed.

“He promised I wouldn’t be forgotten.””

For a second, nobody spoke.

Then Emily continued.

“When Ava was born, Daniel found out.””

Grant looked at her.

“How?””

“Your father’s attorney.””

Richard Vale.

The name again.

Emily continued.

“They changed the records.””

“They erased her.””

“Yes.””

Ava’s voice was quiet.

“They told my mother I was dead.””

Grant looked at Emily.

“What?””

Emily looked devastated.

“I was told Ava died after complications.””

Ava looked down.

“I was taken away.””

Grant felt sick.

“For how long?””

“Years.””

Ava answered.

“Until Emily found me.””

Grant stared.

“When?””

Emily whispered:

“The same month I found out I was pregnant with Leo.””

Everything connected.

The missing records.

The lies.

The inheritance.

Daniel’s obsession.

Grant looked at Leo.

“Leo was never the reason.””

Emily shook her head.

“No.””

“Then why?””

“Because Daniel realized something.””

“What?””

Emily looked at Ava.

“If Ava returned, the entire inheritance would go to her.””

Daniel laughed.

“And you think I was the villain?””

Grant looked at him.

“Yes.””

Daniel shook his head.

“You don't understand.””

“I understand enough.””

“No.””

Daniel’s voice became sharper.

“You don't understand what your father did.””

Grant stopped.

“What?””

Daniel looked at him.

“Ask Emily.””

Grant turned.

Emily looked terrified.

“Emily?””

She whispered:

“Your father knew about Ava.””

Grant froze.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“And he hid it?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Emily looked down.

“Because he believed the Ashford family name mattered more than people.””

Grant stared at the floor.

All his life, he had believed his father was strict.

Cold.

Demanding.

But not cruel.

Now he wasn’t sure what was real anymore.

Ava spoke quietly.

“Your father signed the papers.””

Grant looked at her.

“What papers?””

“The ones saying I never existed.””

Silence.

Then Grant heard something outside.

Cars.

Multiple vehicles.

Daniel heard it too.

His face changed.

Police lights flashed through the chapel windows.

Daniel looked toward the exit.

Grant stepped in front of him.

“It’s over.””

Daniel stared at him.

“You think this ends with me?””

Grant didn’t move.

“Yes.””

Daniel smiled sadly.

“No.””

He looked at Ava.

Then Leo.

“You still don’t know the last secret.””

Grant’s expression tightened.

“What last secret?””

Daniel backed toward the door.

“Ask Emily why she really disappeared.””

Emily went pale.

“Daniel.””

Grant turned.

“What is he talking about?””

Daniel smiled.

“Ask her who she was running from.””

The doors burst open.

Police officers entered.

Daniel was taken down before he could escape.

But Grant barely noticed.

Because he was looking at Emily.

Her face told him everything.

There was another secret.

One she still hadn’t told him.

“Emily.””

She closed her eyes.

“I was running from someone.””

“Who?””

She looked at him.

And whispered:

“Your father.””

Grant felt the world shift again.

“My father is dead.””

Emily nodded.

“I know.””

“Then who was I running from?””

Emily looked toward the police car lights outside.

Her voice was barely audible.

“The man who helped him fake his death.””

Grant froze.

“What?””

Emily grabbed his hand.

“Grant.””

Her eyes filled with fear.

“Your father never died.””

The chapel went silent.

And then Grant’s phone buzzed.

A message from an unknown number.

A photograph appeared.

An old man standing outside the cemetery.

Alive.

The caption underneath read:

*You finally found the children I tried to erase.*

Grant stared at the screen.

May you like

Then the next message appeared.

*Now find out what I did to their mother.*
