Chapter 7: The Child Nobody Knew About

I stared at the bracelet inside the wooden box.

My name was there.

Emma Carter.

But underneath it was another name.

Vanessa Reed.

For several seconds, my brain refused to understand what I was seeing.

It was impossible.

A mistake.

A coincidence.

Anything except the truth.

“Dad…”

My voice barely came out.

He didn’t answer.

He was staring at the bracelet like it had opened a door he had spent years trying to keep locked.

“Why is her name here?””

My father reached toward the box but stopped before touching anything.

“I don’t know.””

I looked at him.

“Don’t say that.””

His eyes met mine.

“I swear to you, Emma. I don’t know.””

The old hospital room felt smaller.

The air felt heavier.

My entire life had been built on things I thought I understood.

My mother.

My father.

My family.

And now every memory felt like it had another version hidden underneath.

I picked up the bracelet carefully.

“Why would Mom have this?””

My father looked at the letter.

“Open it.””

I looked at him.

“You’re not going to?””

He shook his head.

“No.””

“Why?””

“Because it was written to you.””

My fingers trembled as I unfolded the paper.

The handwriting was unmistakable.

Mom’s handwriting.

The same handwriting that had labeled my birthday cards.

The same handwriting that had written notes in my lunch bag when I was little.

But this letter was different.

There was no warmth.

Only urgency.

I began reading.

*Emma,*

*If you are reading this, it means the truth I tried to hide has finally found you.*

My heart tightened.

*I wanted to tell you everything myself. I wanted to sit beside you and explain why some people enter our lives carrying secrets instead of love.*

I swallowed.

*But if I failed, you need to know one thing first.*

I looked at my father.

Then back at the page.

*Vanessa Reed was not a stranger when she came into our family.*

My breath caught.

I kept reading.

*Before she became Vanessa, before the new name and the new life, she was someone I tried to save.*

I frowned.

Save?

*Years ago, I met a young woman who was trapped in a dangerous situation. Her father, Richard Reed, was involved with people who valued money more than human lives.*

My eyes moved faster.

*Vanessa was not innocent. But she was not the monster everyone believed she was either.*

I stopped.

That wasn’t what I expected.

After everything Vanessa had done, I expected my mother’s letter to be filled with anger.

But it wasn’t.

It was complicated.

Like my mother understood something none of us did.

*She made choices that hurt people. She lied. She ran. But I believed there was still a part of her that wanted to escape the person her father created.*

I looked at my father.

He was listening carefully.

*The fire changed everything.*

My hands tightened around the paper.

*Richard wanted to erase evidence. Vanessa wanted to disappear. And I made the mistake of believing I could fix what was broken.*

I stopped reading.

“What does that mean?””

My father looked at the letter.

“I don’t know.””

Again.

That phrase.

But this time, I believed him.

I continued.

*Emma, the reason Vanessa’s name appears beside yours is because the night you were born was the night everything changed.*

My heart began pounding.

*Vanessa was in the hospital that night because she was injured. She had nowhere to go. She had nobody.*

I looked at the bracelet.

*For a short time, she stayed near us. I thought she could become someone better.*

The next line made my hands freeze.

*I was wrong.*

The room became silent.

I continued.

*Vanessa discovered something about you. Something that made her afraid.*

I looked up.

“What?””

My father didn’t know.

The letter continued.

*Your birth was connected to the fire.*

My eyes widened.

“No.””

The word escaped my mouth.

My father stepped closer.

“Emma…”

“No.””

I shook my head.

“My birth?””

The letter trembled in my hands.

*The fire was not only about Richard’s business. It was about a secret involving your father’s company and my decision to protect you.*

I looked at my father.

“What secret?””

He looked devastated.

“I don’t know.””

I almost believed him.

Almost.

Because my father looked just as lost as I felt.

I kept reading.

*If Vanessa ever returns, she will tell you that she came because she wanted revenge. That is only part of the truth.*

My eyes moved to the next sentence.

*The real reason she came back is because she believes you have something she lost.*

A cold feeling spread through me.

Something she lost.

What could that mean?

The final paragraph was shorter.

But it was the one that scared me most.

*Emma, if Vanessa asks you to remember the night of your birth, do not trust your memories. Trust the evidence.*

I lowered the letter.

“What does that mean?””

My father looked at me.

“You don’t remember that night.””

“No.””

“But Vanessa thinks you do.””

A sound came from the hallway.

Both of us froze.

Someone was outside.

My father immediately stepped in front of me.

“Who’s there?””

No answer.

Then footsteps.

Slow.

Moving away.

My father ran toward the door.

By the time he reached the hallway, nobody was there.

Only a small envelope sitting on the floor.

He picked it up.

I saw his expression change.

“What?””

He handed it to me.

My name was written on the front.

Not Emma Carter.

Just Emma.

I opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

An old photograph from the hospital.

My mother was sitting in a chair.

Holding a baby.

Me.

But standing beside her was Vanessa.

Younger.

Different.

And crying.

I turned the photo over.

There was writing on the back.

Not my mother’s handwriting.

Vanessa’s.

Three words.

*“She chose you.””*

I looked at my father.

“What does that mean?””

Before he could answer, my phone rang.

Vanessa.

I stared at the screen.

My father shook his head.

“Don’t answer.””

But I did.

“Hello?””

For a moment, there was only silence.

Then Vanessa spoke.

Her voice was strangely calm.

“Did you find the box?””

My blood ran cold.

“How did you know?””

She ignored the question.

“Your mother always thought she could protect you.””

“Why were you in that photograph?””

A long pause.

Then Vanessa whispered:

“Because your mother took something from me.””

I looked at the picture.

“What?””

Her voice changed.

Not angry.

Not cruel.

Broken.

“She took my daughter.””

My heart stopped.

The room went silent.

My father looked at me.

Vanessa continued:

“And she gave me you.””

I felt dizzy.

“What are you talking about?””

“You want the truth?””

Her breathing shook.

“Come to the old church on Willow Street.””

My father grabbed my arm.

“No.””

Vanessa heard him.

“You still don’t trust me, Daniel?””

My father stepped closer to the phone.

“Stay away from my daughter.””

Vanessa laughed softly.

“Your daughter?””

The words sounded painful.

Not mocking.

Painful.

“That’s what you’ve called her for twenty years.””

I looked at the photograph again.

My mother.

Vanessa.

Me.

Something was missing.

Something nobody had told me.

“Why should I believe you?”” I asked.

Vanessa was silent.

Then she answered:

“Because your mother left one more thing behind.””

“What?””

A pause.

Then:

“The truth about who gave birth to Emma Carter.””

The call ended.

I stood there frozen.

My father looked terrified.

Not because of Vanessa.

Because he knew something.

Something he had never told me.

And before either of us could speak, Mr. Harrison’s message appeared on my father’s phone.

One sentence.

May you like

One warning.

*“Daniel, do not let Emma meet Vanessa. She has finally found out what your wife hid.””*
