Chapter 9: The Truth My Mother Protected Me From

I wanted to run.

Not because I was afraid of Vanessa.

Not because I believed her.

Because suddenly, I didn’t know who I was.

Every memory I had became a question.

My mother holding my hand.

My mother singing to me when I was sick.

My mother teaching me how to bake cookies in the kitchen.

Were those moments real?

Or was I just living inside someone else’s secret?

I looked at my father.

The man who had always been my anchor.

And for the first time, I wondered if he had been protecting me…

or protecting the truth.

“Say something,” I whispered.

My father looked at me.

“Emma…”

“No.””

My voice broke.

“Don’t say my name like that.””

He stopped.

“Tell me.””

The church was silent.

Vanessa stood a few feet away.

Watching.

Waiting.

My father looked at her.

Then at me.

“I should have told you.””

My heart sank.

“You knew.””

He lowered his head.

“I knew something was wrong.””

“That’s not what I asked.””

His silence was painful.

“Yes.””

The word barely left his mouth.

“Yes, I knew.””

I stepped back.

“How long?””

“Emma…”

“How long did you know?””

My father’s eyes filled with tears.

“Six years.””

Six years.

The number echoed in my mind.

Six years of birthday dinners.

Six years of family holidays.

Six years of him looking at me while knowing the biggest truth about my life.

“You found out when I was eighteen.””

He nodded.

“And you said nothing.””

“I was afraid.””

I laughed quietly.

“Of what?””

“Of losing you.””

The answer hurt.

Because part of me understood.

And part of me hated that I did.

“You don’t lose someone by telling them the truth.””

My father looked broken.

“I thought if I told you, everything you loved would disappear.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“Maybe it already did.””

Her expression changed.

For a second, I saw pain.

Real pain.

Not the controlled emotion she had shown for years.

“Emma,” she whispered.

I turned toward her.

“Don’t.””

She stopped.

“You don’t get to act like the victim.””

Her eyes lowered.

“I know.””

That surprised me.

“I know I made mistakes.””

“Mistakes?””

My voice rose.

“You tried to take my father’s fortune.””

“Yes.””

“You planned to send me away.””

Her face tightened.

“Yes.””

“You lied to us for two years.””

“Yes.””

The honesty almost made it worse.

Because I expected another excuse.

Another performance.

Instead, she just stood there.

Accepting it.

“Then why should I believe anything you say?””

Vanessa looked at the photograph in my hand.

“Because your mother believed me once.””

I froze.

“What?””

Vanessa took a breath.

“Your mother hated me at first.””

“That makes sense.””

“She thought I was dangerous.””

“She was right.””

Vanessa nodded.

“Maybe.””

The answer caught me off guard.

“But then she found out the truth about Richard.””

She looked at my father.

“And about what happened the night Emma was born.””

My father closed his eyes.

I noticed.

That small reaction.

That tiny moment.

He knew there was more.

“What happened?””

Nobody answered.

I looked between them.

“What happened that night?””

Vanessa spoke softly.

“Your mother saved my life.””

I stared at her.

“What?””

“Richard was trying to destroy evidence. He knew I had copies of documents.””

“What documents?””

“Records of his illegal deals.””

She looked at me.

“Your mother helped me escape.””

“And then?””

Vanessa swallowed.

“Then the fire happened.””

I looked at the photograph.

The baby.

The bracelet.

My identity.

“So where do I fit into this?””

Vanessa’s eyes filled.

“You were born during the chaos.””

“That doesn’t explain anything.””

She nodded.

“You’re right.””

She looked at my father.

“Daniel needs to tell you.””

I turned.

My father looked exhausted.

“I found the original hospital records.””

“Why?””

“Because after your mother died, I started searching for answers.””

“And?””

He took a deep breath.

“The records showed there was a mistake.””

“What kind of mistake?””

“The hospital had two newborn girls that night.””

The words made my heart stop.

“Two?””

“Yes.””

“One was yours.””

My father nodded.

“And one was Vanessa’s daughter.””

The church felt colder.

“What happened?””

He looked at the floor.

“There was a fire alarm in the maternity wing.””

I listened carefully.

“Doctors moved the babies quickly.””

“Then?””

“The records were damaged.””

I stared.

“No.””

“Yes.””

My father’s voice broke.

“Two bracelets were mixed.””

My hand went to my chest.

The bracelet.

The one in the box.

Vanessa’s name.

My name.

“It was an accident.””

Vanessa whispered.

I looked at her.

“Then why did Mom hide it?””

Her expression changed.

“Because she found out someone caused the confusion.””

My father looked at her.

“What?””

Vanessa nodded.

“Someone changed the records.””

The silence was terrifying.

“Who?””

Nobody spoke.

Then Vanessa looked at my father.

“You already know.””

My father’s face went pale.

“No.””

“Daniel.””

“No.””

“You found the same evidence I did.””

He stepped back.

“Stop.””

I looked at him.

“Who?””

My father didn’t answer.

Vanessa did.

“Richard.””

The name hung in the air.

“He changed the records because he wanted to control the situation.””

I frowned.

“How would changing two baby records help him?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“Because he knew one of the babies was connected to your mother’s evidence.””

I felt dizzy.

“What evidence?””

She looked at the folder.

“The evidence your mother left for you.””

My father’s eyes widened.

“The company.””

Vanessa nodded.

“Your mother hid everything under Emma’s name.””

I stared.

“My name?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because nobody would suspect a baby.””

My entire life had been part of a plan.

A plan created before I could even speak.

Before I could walk.

Before I knew who I was.

My phone suddenly buzzed.

A message.

From Mr. Harrison.

I opened it.

My blood froze.

*I found the original birth records. They confirm the mistake. But there is one more detail.*

A second message appeared.

*The records were changed again five years ago.*

I looked at my father.

“Five years ago?””

His face changed.

Because five years ago…

was when Vanessa entered our lives.

Another message arrived.

*Someone wanted Emma to believe she was never a Carter.*

My hands shook.

I showed them the phone.

Vanessa looked shocked.

My father looked terrified.

Then a final message appeared.

Not from Mr. Harrison.

From an unknown number.

A single sentence.

*You’re asking the wrong question, Emma.*

I stared at the screen.

Another message came immediately.

*The question isn’t who your mother was.*

My breathing stopped.

Then the final line appeared.

*The question is why she chose you.*

I looked up.

Everyone was silent.

Because whoever sent that message knew.

They knew everything.

And then my father’s phone rang.

He answered.

A man’s voice came through.

Older.

Calm.

Certain.

Richard Reed.

“I told you the truth would come out eventually.””

My father gripped the phone.

“You’re alive.””

“Yes.””

“Where are you?””

Richard laughed softly.

“That’s not important.””

“Then what is?””

A pause.

Then Richard said:

“The fact that your daughter is finally ready to hear why her mother saved her.””

My father stepped forward.

“Stay away from Emma.””

Richard ignored him.

“Because once she knows the whole story…”

His voice lowered.

“She’ll understand why Vanessa was never the person your wife feared most.””

The call ended.

And for the first time…

I wondered if Vanessa had been telling the truth.

Because maybe the woman who tried to destroy my family…

was not the only person who had been hiding something.

Maybe she was hiding something from someone else.

May you like

Someone much more dangerous.

And that person was coming for me.
