Chapter 11 - MARIA REFUSED A REWARDMom offered Maria $250,000.

Maria refused.
“I don’t want money for telling truth.”
Mom said:
“It isn’t payment.”
“No.”
Maria shook her head.
“I would feel strange.”
Eventually they compromised.
Mom funded Maria’s nursing-school tuition for her daughter.
And increased Maria’s salary.
Not as hush money.
Not as ownership.
As gratitude.
Maria stayed six more months.
Then left voluntarily to help her sister open a small bakery.
We attended opening day.
Sophie decorated cupcakes.
Badly.

Maria laughed.
That felt like recovery.
