Chapter 7 - SOPHIE THOUGHT SHE HAD DESTROYED HER FAMILYMy daughter stopped sleeping.
She thought the video caused everything.
One night, she came into my room.
“Dad?”
“What?”
“If I didn’t record it, would Mom still be here?”
My chest tightened.
“Maybe.”
She started crying.
“Then I ruined it.”
“No.”
She looked at me.
I chose every word carefully.
“Your video did not make your mother steal.”
Silence.
“It did not make her hurt Maria.”
“It did not make Uncle Marcus ask for money.”
“You showed what was already happening.”
Sophie whispered:
“But now Mom hates me.”
“No.”
I didn’t actually know what Victoria felt.
So I corrected.
“Your mother may be angry about what happened.”
“But if she blames you, that is wrong.”
Sophie cried harder.
“She said family protects family.”
I sat beside her.
“Yes.”
“Didn’t I fail?”
“No.”
I shook my head.
“Protecting family does not mean protecting harm.”
