Chapter 3 - The DNA Envelope

No one spoke.

The voicemail had already destroyed whatever illusion Daniel had tried to preserve.

But the sealed envelope in Jonathan Hayes's hand somehow made the room feel even colder.

He didn't open it immediately.

Instead, he looked at me.

"Ava, before I continue, I need to ask you something."

I nodded numbly.

"About three months ago, did you ask me to quietly investigate your family's financial records?"

"I did."

"You also asked me to investigate whether your signatures had been copied."

"Yes."

"And you asked one more question."

I searched my memory.

Then I remembered.

The question that had kept me awake night after night.

"Was Daniel hiding anything else from me?"

Mr. Hayes gave a slow nod.

"I'm afraid the answer is yes."

Daniel finally found his voice.

"Jonathan, don't."

"You lost the right to ask for privacy when you forged your wife's identity."

The police officers remained silent, allowing him to continue.

Mr. Hayes placed the envelope on the coffee table.

Across the front were typed words:

CONFIDENTIAL – FAMILY VERIFICATION

Daniel's breathing became noticeably heavier.

Evelyn took one step backward.

I looked from one to the other.

"What is it?"

Neither of them answered.

Mr. Hayes broke the seal.

Inside were several laboratory reports and a short letter.

He unfolded the first page.

"This investigation began because Mrs. Carter noticed unusual withdrawals from her accounts."

He turned another page.

"During that investigation, we discovered documents that should never have existed."

The officer frowned.

"What documents?"

"A request for amended inheritance records."

I stared.

"Inheritance?"

"Yes."

"I never filed anything."

"You didn't."

He looked directly at Daniel.

"Someone else did."

Daniel slowly sat down on the sofa.

Almost as though his legs could no longer support him.

Mr. Hayes continued.

"The application claimed that Mrs. Carter had voluntarily surrendered all future inheritance rights connected to her late father's estate."

My heart stopped.

"My father's estate?"

He nodded.

"It also claimed she agreed to transfer those rights to her husband."

I couldn't breathe.

"My father spent his entire life building that company."

"I know."

"He left it to me."

"I know."

"And someone tried to steal it."

Mr. Hayes didn't answer.

He simply handed the papers to the police.

The older officer carefully read each page.

Then he looked at Daniel.

"These signatures appear to be forged as well."

Daniel rubbed both hands across his face.

"It wasn't supposed to happen like this."

I stared at him.

"What wasn't?"

He didn't answer.

My voice became sharper.

"What wasn't supposed to happen?"

Still nothing.

Lily quietly climbed into my lap.

She wrapped both arms around my neck.

"Mommy..."

I kissed the top of her head.

"I'm here."

"Are we going somewhere?"

"I don't know yet."

"I don't want to leave you."

"You won't."

Across the room, Noah stood beside one of the officers.

The officer gently rested a hand on his shoulder.

Everything suddenly felt unreal.

Our children should have been finishing homework.

Watching cartoons.

Arguing over bedtime.

Instead, they were watching police investigate their own father.

Mr. Hayes unfolded another document.

"This concerns the Carter Family Trust."

Daniel immediately stood.

"Don't."

Mr. Hayes ignored him.

"The trust contains a clause that becomes active if Mrs. Carter is proven to be the victim of financial coercion."

The officer looked up.

"What happens then?"

"Every transfer involving her inheritance is automatically frozen."

Daniel closed his eyes.

Evelyn whispered,

"No..."

Mr. Hayes continued.

"All jointly held assets are placed under court supervision until the investigation concludes."

Daniel looked at me desperately.

"Ava..."

It was the first time he had spoken my name all evening without anger.

I looked back at him.

"What?"

"We can fix this."

I almost laughed.

"Fix it?"

"I made mistakes."

"You stole my identity."

"I panicked."

"You forged my signature."

"I thought I could repay everything."

"You planned to divorce me."

His shoulders slumped.

"I never wanted it to go this far."

I slowly stood, still holding Lily's hand.

"Then how far did you want it to go?"

He couldn't answer.

The silence lasted several long seconds.

Then Evelyn suddenly spoke.

"It was my idea."

Everyone turned.

Daniel looked horrified.

"Mom..."

She ignored him.

"I told him the business would recover."

She took a shaky breath.

"I told him we only needed a little more time."

"A little more time?" I repeated.

She nodded weakly.

"I told him no one would ever find out."

Daniel shook his head.

"No."

She looked at him.

"I won't let you take all the blame."

"You don't understand."

"I understand perfectly."

The officers exchanged glances.

One of them quietly began writing notes.

Mr. Hayes spoke again.

"There is still one matter remaining."

He lifted the final laboratory report.

"The reason I requested DNA verification."

I frowned.

"I don't understand."

"Neither did I."

He handed me the report.

"The request wasn't filed by you."

"It wasn't?"

"No."

"Who filed it?"

He looked toward Daniel.

"He did."

I turned to my husband.

"You ordered a DNA test?"

Daniel looked at the floor.

"Why?"

His lips moved.

Barely.

"I needed proof."

"Proof of what?"

He finally looked into my eyes.

His expression wasn't angry anymore.

It was broken.

"My mother told me..."

His voice cracked.

"...that Lily wasn't my daughter."

The room exploded.

"No!" I shouted.

Lily clung to me in confusion.

"Daddy?"

Daniel covered his face.

"I didn't want to believe it."

I felt tears filling my eyes.

"You actually questioned our daughter?"

"I was manipulated."

"You watched her be born!"

"I know."

"You cut her umbilical cord!"

"I know."

"You named her!"

"I know!"

His voice echoed through the house.

Then disappeared into silence.

Mr. Hayes quietly took the report from my hands.

"The laboratory confirmed that Mr. Daniel Carter is the biological father of both Lily and Noah."

Daniel began crying.

Real tears.

The first I had seen from him in years.

"I was wrong."

I looked at him with complete disbelief.

"You believed your mother instead of your wife."

He couldn't deny it.

Evelyn suddenly whispered,

"I only wanted to protect my son."

I stared at her.

"From what?"

She looked away.

"I thought..."

"No."

I stepped toward her.

"What did you think?"

She swallowed.

"I thought if he divorced you before the debts were discovered..."

The realization hit me like lightning.

"...the debts would stay with me."

She slowly closed her eyes.

No one needed to say another word.

Everyone understood.

The divorce had never been about a failed marriage.

It had been about leaving me legally responsible for millions of dollars they had secretly borrowed.

The officers looked at one another.

Then the senior officer spoke calmly.

"Mr. Carter. Mrs. Carter."

He looked at both Daniel and Evelyn.

"At this point, we're treating this as a criminal fraud investigation."

Daniel lowered his head.

The handcuffs hadn't appeared yet.

But I could already hear them.

And deep inside, I realized something painful.

The man I had spent ten years loving...

May you like

had disappeared long before this dinner ever began.

I had only been the last person to notice.
