Chapter 6 - The Banker Who Never Made It to Court

Nobody spoke for several long seconds.

The only sound inside the living room was Noah quietly crying against my shoulder.

I held him closer without taking my eyes off Rebecca Sloan.

"What did you say?" I asked.

Rebecca looked down at the file in front of her.

"The banker who approved the fraudulent transfers was found dead this evening."

Daniel's face drained of color.

Evelyn grabbed the back of a chair to steady herself.

The senior police officer immediately became serious.

"Cause of death?"

"Still under investigation."

"Who identified him?"

"His assistant couldn't reach him all day. Building security entered the apartment."

The officer exchanged a quick glance with his partner.

"This investigation just changed."

I looked at Daniel.

"You knew."

He slowly shook his head.

"I knew he was scared."

"Scared of what?"

"He said someone wanted every document destroyed."

Rebecca turned another page.

"His email records support that statement."

She slid several printed emails across the coffee table.

Each one had been sent from anonymous addresses.

The messages were short.

Delete the files.

Erase the signatures.

Forget Mrs. Carter ever existed.

One message stood out from all the others.

Finish the divorce before the audit begins.

The date on the email was only four days earlier.

I felt my stomach tighten.

"So the divorce..."

Mr. Hayes nodded.

"...was scheduled before anyone discovered the missing money."

I looked toward Daniel.

"You weren't divorcing me because you stopped loving me."

He lowered his head.

"You were divorcing me because you needed someone to blame."

His silence answered everything.

Lily looked up at me.

"Mommy?"

"Yes?"

"Are we still a family?"

The question broke something inside me.

I brushed her hair away from her face.

"You will always be my family."

She looked toward Daniel.

"What about Daddy?"

Daniel covered his face with both hands.

"I'll always be your father."

Lily's small voice trembled.

"Then why did you make Mommy cry?"

No answer came.

Even Evelyn couldn't speak.

The senior officer carefully closed the binder.

"Mr. Carter, we're going to need a full statement downtown."

Daniel nodded.

"I'll cooperate."

"You understand you're now part of an active financial fraud investigation."

"I understand."

Rebecca quietly interrupted.

"There is something else."

Everyone looked toward her.

"I traced one final account."

She placed another bank statement on the table.

Unlike the others, this account wasn't under Daniel's company.

It wasn't under Evelyn's name.

It wasn't under Melissa's either.

The account holder's name made my heart stop.

Ava Elizabeth Carter.

I frowned.

"That's impossible."

"I've never opened that account."

Rebecca nodded.

"I know."

"The account was created eighteen months ago using forged identity documents."

My heart pounded.

"How much money went through it?"

Rebecca inhaled slowly.

"Just over six million dollars."

The room became silent again.

Daniel looked genuinely shocked.

"Six million?"

Rebecca nodded.

"And every transfer was moved out again within forty-eight hours."

The officer looked up.

"Where did the money go?"

Rebecca turned to the final page.

"Offshore accounts."

Mr. Hayes leaned forward.

"Can you identify the beneficiaries?"

Rebecca hesitated.

"One."

"Who?"

She pointed to a highlighted line.

Carter Legacy Holdings.

Daniel frowned.

"I've never heard of it."

Rebecca looked directly at him.

"That's because it wasn't your company."

Evelyn suddenly looked terrified.

"No..."

Everyone noticed.

Mr. Hayes slowly turned toward her.

"You recognize the name."

She shook her head too quickly.

"I... no..."

"You do."

"I don't."

Daniel stared at his mother.

"Mom?"

She refused to answer.

Rebecca calmly opened another folder.

"Carter Legacy Holdings was incorporated twenty-three years ago."

She looked at me.

"Five years before you and Daniel met."

I frowned.

"So who owns it?"

Rebecca answered quietly.

"We don't know."

The company has no listed directors.

No public shareholders.

No registered employees.

It exists only through a network of trusts."

The older officer frowned.

"A shell company."

"Exactly."

"But someone controlled it."

Rebecca nodded.

"And that person received almost every dollar stolen in Ava's name."

Daniel slowly sat back down.

"I swear..."

He looked at me.

"I didn't know about this account."

For the first time all night...

I believed him.

He had lied.

He had cheated.

He had forged documents.

But the confusion on his face wasn't fake.

Someone had been using both of us.

Mr. Hayes quietly asked,

"Rebecca... who authorized the transfers into Carter Legacy Holdings?"

She reached into her satchel and removed one last certified document.

"I requested the original authorization from the central banking archive."

She placed it carefully on the table.

At the bottom appeared a signature.

Not mine.

Not Daniel's.

Not Melissa's.

Not Evelyn's.

The signature belonged to only one person.

Robert Carter.

Daniel's late father.

The man who had supposedly died twelve years earlier.

Daniel stared at the document.

His lips parted.

"That's impossible."

Rebecca looked at him sadly.

"It would be."

She tapped the authorization date.

"It was signed..."

She paused.

"...eight months ago."

Every person in the room froze.

Daniel whispered the words none of us were prepared to hear.

"My father..."

"...has been dead for twelve years."

Rebecca slowly closed the file.

"Then someone has been pretending to be a dead man."

And suddenly, our divorce case had become something much larger than fraud.

Someone had stolen millions.

Someone had built an invisible company.

May you like

And somewhere...

a man who was supposed to be dead had just signed away my future.
