Chapter 8 - EVELYN FINALLY SAID SHE WAS AFRAID OF LOSING DANIEL

At seventy-four, after completing sentence/probation, Evelyn requested mediated conversation.

I went without Grace first.

She looked smaller.

No pearls.

No power.

“Claire.”

“Evelyn.”

Then:

“I am sorry.”

Specific?

I waited.

She understood.

“I am sorry I threw apron at you.”

“I am sorry I helped build medical file.”

“I am sorry I treated your inheritance like family property.”

Then:

“I am sorry I used Daniel’s fear of losing child to make him easier to control.”

That one.

Then I asked:

“Why did you hate me?”

She thought.

“I was afraid of you.”

I laughed.

“Me?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“You did not need me.”

There.

Evelyn had built identity around being necessary to Daniel.

After his father died, she became adviser.

Then I married him.

I had money.

Career.

Father.

Opinions.

Daniel listened to me.

Then Grace.

She feared becoming irrelevant.

Then:

“Madison needed me.”

Yes.

So she liked.

Then:

“You could have had place without taking mine.”

Evelyn cried.

“I know now.”

Then:

“Do you expect forgiveness?”

“No.”

Good.

Then Grace.

She asked:

“Can I ever meet her?”

Eventually, age twelve, supervised.

Grace asked directly:

“Did you try to take me from Mom?”

Evelyn answered carefully.

“I helped create false papers that could have made it easier for your father to control decisions if your mother was vulnerable.”

Grace frowned.

“So yes-ish.”

Claire nearly laughed.

Evelyn:

“Yes-ish.”

Then:

“Why?”

“I wanted control.”

Children cut through.

Then:

“Do you still?”

“No.”

Grace:

“Good.”

No hug first meeting.

May you like

Later maybe.

Not automatic.
