Chapter 12: The Son Richard Erased

Margaret couldn't stop staring at the name.

Daniel Bennett.

She repeated it under her breath, as if saying it enough times might bring back a memory she had buried for decades.

“Tell me about him,” I said.

She sat slowly.

“I was nineteen when I gave birth. Richard and I weren't married yet. He was working for Evelyn's company, and I was still living with my parents.””

“Was Daniel healthy?””

Margaret nodded.

“Perfectly healthy. He had dark hair and a tiny birthmark on his shoulder.””

Her eyes filled.

“I held him for two days.””

I reached across the table.

“What happened?””

“Richard told me there had been complications. He said the hospital needed to take him for treatment.””

She paused.

“Then a nurse came back and told me he hadn't survived.””

I felt sick.

“Did you see his body?””

Margaret shook her head.

“They told me the funeral arrangements had already been handled.””

“Did you receive a death certificate?””

“No. Richard said he would take care of everything.””

Helen, who had been reviewing the notebook, looked up.

“Do you remember the hospital?””

Margaret nodded.

“St. Mary's Maternity Hospital.””

Helen wrote it down.

“And the year?””

“Thirty-two years ago.””

I looked at the notebook.

My grandmother's entry had been dated twenty-eight years earlier.

Daniel's name appeared in the same handwriting.

“Why would my grandmother know about him?””

Margaret looked toward the window.

“Because she was the one who helped me after I gave birth.””

I frowned.

“Your relationship with Evelyn was already close?””

“Yes. She treated me like a daughter. When Richard told me Daniel had died, Evelyn questioned the hospital records.””

“What did she find?””

Margaret shook her head.

“I never knew.””

She turned toward the notebook.

“Perhaps she found something.””

Helen examined the pages.

“There's a reference here to a hospital administrator named Peter Lawson.””

Margaret leaned forward.

“I remember that name.””

“Who was he?””

“He worked in the maternity ward. He was the person who told me Daniel had died.””

Helen wrote it down.

“Do you know whether he's still alive?””

Margaret shook her head.

“I don't know.””

I looked at the old letter again.

The child Richard took was not the only child he tried to erase.

A terrible possibility entered my mind.

“Margaret, could Daniel have been given to someone else?””

She looked at me.

For a moment, she seemed unable to speak.

Then she nodded.

“I've wondered that for years.””

A knock interrupted us.

Detective Harris entered with Andrew.

His face was pale.

I stood.

“Did you find her?””

Andrew nodded.

But he wasn't smiling.

“She's alive.””

Margaret began crying.

“Thank God.””

Andrew sat down.

“She was moved to Northbridge under a false identity. The facility had records showing that she was a patient with no known relatives.””

“Did you see her?””

He nodded.

“She didn't recognize me at first.””

His voice broke.

“She thought I was another visitor.””

I felt tears in my eyes.

“What happened?””

“I showed her the photograph.””

He took it from his pocket.

The same photograph from the storage facility.

Catherine holding him as a baby.

“She stared at it for a long time. Then she touched my face.””

Andrew swallowed.

“She said my name.””

Margaret covered her mouth.

“She remembered you.””

Andrew nodded.

“She remembered everything.””

He looked down.

“She asked why I had taken so long.””

Nobody spoke.

Then he added, “The doctors say she needs medical care, but she's stable. Detective Harris has arranged for her to be moved to a hospital where Richard can't access her records.””

I let out a breath I hadn't realized I was holding.

“Can we see her?””

Andrew nodded.

“Tomorrow, once the doctors finish their assessment.””

Margaret approached him.

“Andrew, I want to apologize to her.””

He looked at her.

“That's her decision.””

Margaret nodded.

“I understand.””

Detective Harris placed a folder on the table.

“We also found something interesting at Northbridge.””

Helen opened it.

Inside were medical records, transfer orders, and a list of private payments.

One document had been signed by Richard.

Another carried the signature of Dr. Martin Shaw.

I recognized the doctor's name immediately.

“He was the doctor who evaluated me.””

Detective Harris nodded.

“We've discovered that Dr. Shaw has been involved in several questionable guardianship cases over the past decade. Richard paid him through multiple corporate accounts.””

Helen studied the documents.

“This establishes a pattern.””

“There is more,” Detective Harris said.

She removed a photograph.

It showed a much younger Margaret standing outside St. Mary's Hospital.

Beside her was Richard.

He was holding a baby wrapped in a white blanket.

Margaret stared.

“That's Daniel.””

I looked at the photograph.

“Are you certain?””

She nodded.

“I remember that blanket.””

Detective Harris turned the photograph over.

A handwritten note was attached.

Baby Bennett. Transfer approved. Destination: Private guardianship placement.

Margaret's breathing became uneven.

“Private guardianship?””

Helen examined the date.

“Two days after Daniel was born.””

Margaret suddenly stood.

“Richard told me my son was dead.””

Detective Harris nodded.

“We believe the death record was falsified.””

Margaret gripped the edge of the table.

“Where did he take him?””

“We're still investigating.””

I looked at the photograph again.

There was a second name written in the corner.

*Guardian: Samuel and Patricia Cole.*

Margaret whispered the names.

“Cole.””

She shook her head.

“I don't know them.””

Helen searched through the remaining papers.

Then she found a document dated twelve years earlier.

It was a bank transfer from D&R Capital to an account belonging to Samuel Cole.

The payment description read:

*Annual family support.*

Margaret looked at Detective Harris.

“Does that mean Daniel is still alive?””

“We have reason to believe so.””

She began crying harder.

After thirty-two years, the possibility that her son might be alive was almost too much to bear.

Andrew placed a hand on her shoulder.

It was a small gesture.

But it was the first time he had willingly comforted her since learning what she had done.

Then Detective Harris made another discovery.

She opened a final folder.

“There's something else we need to discuss.””

Helen looked up.

“What?””

“The guardianship records show that Samuel and Patricia Cole were not the only people involved in the placement.””

She turned the document toward us.

A second signature appeared at the bottom.

Richard Bennett.

And beside it was another name.

Derek Bennett.

My stomach tightened.

“Derek?””

Detective Harris nodded.

“He was listed as a witness.””

Margaret looked confused.

“But Derek was only three years old.””

“Exactly.””

Helen leaned closer.

“Someone used his identity on this document.””

I stared at the signature.

It was written in the same handwriting as the fraudulent authorization Derek had submitted in my name.

I felt a chill.

“Could Richard have forged Derek's signature?””

“Possibly,” Helen replied.

Detective Harris examined another page.

“Or someone else signed it using Derek's identity.””

Margaret sat down.

“Who?””

Nobody answered.

Then my phone rang.

It was Derek.

I didn't want to answer, but Helen gestured for me to do so.

I put it on speaker.

“What do you want?””

His voice sounded exhausted.

“Claire, we need to talk.””

“About what?””

“About the hearing. About the company. About everything.””

“You've had plenty of opportunities to tell the truth.””

He sighed.

“I know.””

The unexpected admission made me pause.

Derek continued.

“My father is going to blame everything on me. He's already preparing to do it.””

I looked at Helen.

“What are you talking about?””

“I'm telling you that I have documents. Documents that prove Richard forged the medical records and stole the money.””

“Why should I believe you?””

“Because I have something you need.””

“What?””

A long silence followed.

Then he said:

“Proof that Margaret's first son is alive.””

Margaret froze.

Derek continued.

“And proof that my father knows exactly where he is.””

Margaret stepped closer to the phone.

“Derek, what did your father do to Daniel?””

He didn't answer.

“Derek!””

Finally, he spoke.

“Grandma Evelyn found out where Daniel was years ago. She left a letter explaining everything.””

My heart began racing.

“Where is the letter?””

“At my house.””

“Which house?””

“The house we shared.””

I looked at Margaret.

Derek's next words were quieter.

“Claire, there's something else in that letter.””

“What?””

He swallowed.

“Daniel isn't just your brother-in-law's missing brother.””

Margaret's face went white.

Derek continued.

“He's the person Grandma Evelyn named as the final protector of your inheritance.””

I stared at the phone.

“Why would she choose someone she believed was dead?””

“Because she knew he was alive.””

Then Derek whispered the sentence that shattered everything we thought we understood.

“And Claire, there's a reason my father has spent thirty years making sure nobody finds him.””

The call ended.

Helen immediately tried calling back.

No answer.

Andrew looked at Margaret.

“Your son is alive.””

Margaret sank into the chair.

For the first time in thirty-two years, she allowed herself to believe it.

But before anyone could speak, Detective Harris received a new alert.

She read it silently.

Then she looked at us.

“Richard Bennett has just been arrested.””

Margaret stood.

“For what?””

Detective Harris looked toward the folder containing Daniel's photograph.

“Suspected fraud, unlawful confinement, and conspiracy.””

She paused.

“But there's a problem.””

“What problem?”” Helen asked.

“The officers who searched Richard's office found the original guardianship file.””

Detective Harris placed a photograph on the table.

The file contained a current address.

Not an old one.

A current residential address for Daniel Bennett.

Margaret reached for the paper.

Her hands shook as she read it.

Then she looked up at me.

“Claire…”

I followed her gaze.

The address belonged to a private medical center less than ten miles away.

And the admission date was yesterday.

Daniel was alive.

May you like

He had been living nearby.

And someone had checked him into a medical facility under a false name just one day before Richard's arrest.
