Chapter 4: The Daughter Nobody Knew Existed
I stared at the photograph until the edges blurred.
The woman standing behind my grandfather looked no older than twenty-five. She had dark hair, delicate features, and the same small beauty mark beneath her left eye that I had seen every morning in my own reflection.
But it was the writing on the back that frightened me.
*Mother: Evelyn Bennett.*
I turned the photograph over again.
“Margaret, who is she?””
My mother-in-law took a shaky breath.
“I think her name was Catherine.””
“Was?””
Margaret nodded.
“Your grandmother had a daughter before she married your grandfather. She never spoke about her.””
I looked down at the photograph.
“Why would she hide her own daughter?””
“Because Catherine disappeared.””
The words hung between us.
My newborn daughter stirred in her bassinet.
I lowered my voice.
“What does this have to do with Derek?””
Margaret pulled the chair closer.
“Richard once told me that your grandmother had a secret. He said she had another child, and that child had a claim to the family business.””
I looked at the photograph again.
“Was Catherine older than my mother?””
“She was older than your mother would have been. I believe she was born before Evelyn met your grandfather.””
I tried to process that.
My grandmother had raised me after my parents died in a car accident. She had been my entire family.
And apparently, there was an entire branch of that family I had never known existed.
“Why would she keep this from me?””
Margaret reached for the ledger.
“Perhaps she was protecting someone.””
She opened the final section and found a handwritten entry.
The date was twenty-eight years earlier.
If Catherine ever returns, she must receive what belongs to her. Richard must never be allowed to control the inheritance.
Below it was a second note.
The original birth certificate is held in the private archive. Only Claire may access it.
I looked at Margaret.
“Why me?””
“I don't know.””
Before she could say anything else, someone knocked on the hospital-room door.
A nurse entered.
“Mrs. Bennett? There's a gentleman asking to see you.””
My heart began racing.
“Derek?””
The nurse checked her clipboard.
“He says he's your brother-in-law.””
I frowned.
“My husband doesn't have a brother.””
Margaret went completely still.
The nurse looked between us.
“He's waiting at reception. He said his name is Andrew Bennett.””
Margaret's coffee slipped from her fingers.
It hit the floor.
I had never seen her look so frightened.
“Don't let him in,” she whispered.
The nurse looked confused.
“Ma'am?””
“Please. Tell security not to let him into this room.””
I stared at her.
“Margaret, who is Andrew?””
She pressed a hand against her forehead.
“Richard had another son.””
I looked at the photograph.
The woman beside my grandfather.
The hidden daughter.
The missing inheritance.
Another son.
Nothing was making sense.
“Is Andrew Catherine's son?””
Margaret nodded slowly.
“I believe so.””
A moment later, my phone vibrated.
An unknown number.
One message.
*Claire, my name is Andrew. I know about the ledger. Your husband is going to tell you I'm dangerous.
Please don't believe him. I'm the only person who can explain why your grandmother hid me.*
A second message arrived.
And before you sign anything, look at the bottom of the Friday transfer agreement. My name is already there.
I opened the photograph of the legal notice Margaret had taken.
At the bottom of the transfer agreement was a line I hadn't noticed before.
*Authorized witness: Andrew Richard Bennett.*
My hands began trembling.
“Margaret, how can he be a witness if he supposedly doesn't exist?””
She stared at the screen.
“Because Richard made sure his identity disappeared from the family records.””
“Why?””
Margaret looked toward the sleeping baby.
“Because Andrew was the one Evelyn wanted to inherit everything.””
I felt as if the floor had disappeared beneath me.
Then the hospital-room door opened.
A nurse stepped inside, followed by a tall man in a charcoal coat.
He was around thirty, with dark hair and tired eyes.
He didn't look at Margaret.
He looked directly at me.
“Claire?””
I pulled the blanket closer around my daughter.
“Who are you?””
He raised both hands.
“My name is Andrew.””
Margaret stood abruptly.
“You have no right to be here.””
Andrew looked at her.
“Neither did Richard when he stole that woman's company.””
Margaret flinched.
Andrew turned back toward me.
“I know this is difficult, but I need you to listen.””
“Why should I trust you?””
He reached inside his coat and removed a small photograph.
It showed the same woman from my grandmother's photograph.
But this time, she was holding a baby.
On the back was a handwritten message.
My son Andrew. If anything happens to me, Evelyn knows where he belongs.
Andrew placed it beside the ledger.
“My mother was Catherine Bennett,” he said.
“And your grandmother spent the last years of her life trying to find me.””
I looked at his face.
“Why didn't she?””
His eyes dropped.
“Because Richard found me first.””
May you like
Then he leaned closer and whispered something that made Margaret sit down.
“Your husband isn't trying to steal your inheritance alone, Claire. He's trying to erase the only person who can prove the company was never his father's.””
