Chapter 2: The Names on the Documents

For several seconds, the only sound in the reception hall was the faint hum of the ventilation system.

I remained on my knees, staring at the sealed folder.

My father's hand rested on top of it.

Derrick's expression had changed completely. The arrogance was gone, replaced by a strained smile that didn't reach his eyes.

Lorraine recovered first.

“Walter,” she said, setting her glass on the nearest table, “I think you've misunderstood something.””

My father turned toward her.

“Then explain it.””

She smoothed the front of her burgundy dress.

“Your daughter is upset. Weddings are emotional. There was a little accident with the wine, and Derrick was trying to—”

“Trying to what?”” Walter interrupted.

Lorraine's lips tightened.

“Maintain some order.””

Walter glanced at the mop lying beside my ruined gown.

“By making my daughter clean the floor on her knees?””

Derrick stepped between us, wearing the practiced expression he used whenever he wanted to make an ugly situation sound reasonable.

“Sir, Ariana became emotional. Things got out of hand. We were trying to keep the reception from turning into a disaster.””

I looked at him in disbelief.

“You told me to clean it.””

He didn't look at me.

“Ariana, please. Not now.””

“Not now?”” My voice cracked.

“You made me do this in front of everyone.””

His face hardened for an instant.

Then he turned back to my father.

“She misunderstood the situation.””

My father slowly removed his hand from the folder.

“Interesting.””

He said it so quietly that Derrick leaned forward to hear him.

“What is?”” Derrick asked.

“The way you speak about my daughter as if she's a problem to be managed.””

Derrick swallowed.

“That's not what I meant.””

“Then choose your words carefully.””

Nobody in the room dared interrupt.

My father had never been a man who needed to raise his voice. When I was a child, he could stop an entire argument simply by entering the room. He had built his company from a small neighborhood office into a successful regional business, but he never brought that authority home to intimidate us.

He had used it to make us feel safe.

Now, watching him stand beside that folder, I realized how little I knew about the world he had tried to protect me from.

“Daddy,” I whispered, “what inheritance documents?””

His eyes softened when he looked at me.

“Sweetheart, I was hoping we'd discuss this privately.””

“Why are their names on them?””

He paused.

“That is exactly what I'm trying to establish.””

Lorraine let out a short laugh.

“Oh, please. You're making this sound criminal.””

Walter turned toward her.

“I haven't accused anyone of a crime.””

“You arrived with a sealed legal folder and questioned us in front of your guests.””

“My daughter's guests,” he replied.

“And until a few minutes ago, I believed you were all celebrating her marriage.””

Lorraine's cheeks reddened.

“This is a family matter.””

“Yes,” Walter said.

“It is. Which makes your treatment of my daughter even harder to understand.””

Derrick reached for the folder.

My father placed his palm over it before Derrick's fingers could touch the seal.

“Don't.””

One word.

Derrick withdrew his hand.

I had seen my husband angry. I had seen him jealous, impatient, and dismissive.

I had never seen him hesitate like that.

“Mr. Hayes,” Derrick began, “whatever you think you've found, there's an explanation.””

“I'm listening.””

Derrick opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Lorraine stepped forward.

“Your daughter told us she had no interest in your business affairs. She wanted a simple life. She said she didn't want to be involved in all your money and paperwork.””

I stared at her.

“I said I wanted to build my own career.””

“Exactly,” Lorraine replied.

“And we respected that.””

“You told me your family didn't care about money.””

Her expression shifted.

“Don't twist my words.””

“You said Derrick loved me because I was different from the women he usually dated.””

Derrick finally looked at me.

“Ariana, stop.””

“No.”” My voice trembled, but I kept speaking.

“You told me you wanted a wife, not an investment. You said you didn't even know how much money my father had.””

His eyes flickered toward the folder.

That tiny glance answered something I hadn't known to ask.

My stomach turned.

“Derrick,” I whispered.

“What do you know about my inheritance?””

He rubbed his jaw.

“I know your father has money. Everyone knows that.””

“That's not what I asked.””

“Your father is making this into something it isn't.””

Walter pulled out a chair and sat down beside the gift table, positioning himself so he could see both Derrick and Lorraine without blocking my view of either of them.

“Let me make one thing clear,” he said.

“I'm not here to debate my daughter's character. I'm here because I discovered something concerning, and now I'm looking at a situation that concerns me even more.””

He tapped the folder once.

Lorraine folded her arms.

“What exactly did you discover?””

Walter looked at her for a long moment.

“Names.””

“Whose names?”” I asked.

“My daughter's. Yours, Derrick. And yours, Lorraine.””

A guest near the entrance gasped.

My hands went cold.

“Mine?”” I whispered.

Walter nodded.

“I found paperwork connected to your inheritance that I hadn't authorized. I wanted to understand why certain people were being associated with it.””

Derrick gave a humorless laugh.

“Associated with it? That's an awfully vague accusation.””

“Then you should have no trouble explaining it.””

“I don't know what you're talking about.””

My father held his gaze.

“That's a very different answer from the one you were about to give me.””

Derrick's mouth snapped shut.

Lorraine moved toward him.

“Derrick, don't let him bully you.””

Walter didn't even turn his head.

“I'm not the one who made a bride kneel beside spilled wine.””

For the first time, several guests openly stepped away from Derrick.

I felt something shift in the room. The humiliation was still there, sharp and burning, but it no longer belonged entirely to me.

My father had seen what they had done.

And he wasn't pretending it was normal.

He extended his hand toward me.

“Come here, sweetheart.””

I reached for him.

He pulled me carefully to my feet, gathering the torn fabric of my gown so I wouldn't trip. His jacket settled around my shoulders, covering the stain spreading across the bodice.

“Are you hurt?”” he asked.

“No.””

He studied my face.

“Did he put his hands on you?””

Derrick answered before I could.

“I never touched her.””

My father looked at the hand Derrick had reached toward me moments earlier.

“Then I suggest you keep it that way.””

“Walter,” Lorraine snapped, “you cannot come into our home and threaten my son.””

“Our home?”” Walter repeated.

She lifted her chin.

“This is the reception hall we arranged.””

My father glanced at the broken decorations and overturned chairs.

“Then you should have arranged better company.””

A sharp whisper traveled through the guests.

Derrick's forced smile disappeared.

“You're humiliating me in front of everyone.””

I looked at him.

The words almost made me laugh.

“You're worried about being humiliated?””

He stared at me.

“You're my wife.””

“And I was your wife when you made me kneel.””

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Walter picked up the legal folder.

“I won't discuss private documents in front of an audience. Ariana deserves the truth, and she deserves to hear it without either of you controlling the conversation.””

Lorraine's expression tightened at the word controlling.

Walter turned to me.

“There's something else you need to know.””

I held my breath.

He looked toward the front entrance, then back at the two people standing before us.

“I didn't come here because I suddenly became suspicious of your husband.””

Derrick's eyes narrowed.

Walter continued.

“I came because someone contacted me this morning and warned me that your wedding day might not be what it appeared to be.””

My blood ran cold.

“Who?”” I asked.

My father opened his mouth.

Before he could answer, Derrick's phone vibrated on the table.

The screen lit up.

A new message appeared.

Derrick saw it.

And whatever color had returned to his face vanished again.

Because the name displayed above the message was one I recognized.

*Ariana Hayes.*

My own name.

May you like

And beneath it were three words.

She mustn't know.
