Chapter 8: The Key to My Father's House

My father held the brass key between his fingers.

For several seconds, he didn't say anything.

The little white tag swung gently beneath his hand. I recognized the handwriting on it immediately.

Three weeks earlier, Derrick had told me he wanted to surprise me with dinner at my father's house. I'd given him the spare key so he could enter through the side door while I was finishing work.

He'd returned it the following morning.

At least, I'd thought he had.

“Lorraine,” my father said quietly, “why do you have a key to my house?””

She bent to retrieve her handbag, moving quickly enough that her knee struck the table.

“It's not what you think.””

“Then explain it.””

“I don't know how it got into my bag.””

Derrick stared at her.

“Mother, you told me you returned it.””

Lorraine straightened.

“Not now.””

“You said you returned it!””

Richard stepped between them.

“Please lower your voices.””

Derrick ignored him.

“You told me the spare key had been destroyed.””

My stomach turned.

I looked at my husband.

“Why would my father's key need to be destroyed?””

Derrick went silent.

My father closed his hand around the key.

“Richard, please note where this was found.””

Richard took out his phone and photographed the key beside Lorraine's handbag before asking Walter to place it on the table.

“Until we know more, nobody should assume who used it or why,” he said.

“But it needs to be documented.””

Lorraine's face reddened.

“This is humiliating. I came here to celebrate my son's marriage, and now I'm being treated like a thief.””

I stared at her.

“You have a key to my father's house.””

“I already explained that I don't know how it got there.””

“And Derrick just said you told him it had been destroyed.””

She turned toward her son.

“Derrick, tell them what you meant.””

He rubbed his forehead.

“I meant that we'd discussed returning it.””

“That isn't what you said.””

He looked at me.

“Ariana, I can explain.””

I felt a tired laugh escape my lips.

“Of course you can.””

“I can!””

“Then explain why you needed access to my father's house. Explain the copied signature. Explain the inheritance documents. Explain why your mother was trying to get me to sign something after the wedding.””

His breathing became uneven.

“I never wanted you to get hurt.””

“But you watched me kneel on the floor while your mother laughed.””

“That was a mistake.””

“No, Derrick. A mistake is forgetting an anniversary. A mistake is saying the wrong thing when you're angry. What happened today was a choice.””

He stared at me.

My father moved closer, but I didn't need him to speak for me.

“I chose you because I believed you loved me,” I continued.

“I believed you when you said my father's money meant nothing to you. I believed you when you promised that we would make our own life.””

Derrick's eyes glistened.

“We can still do that.””

I shook my head.

“You don't get to promise me a future while refusing to tell me what you did in the past.””

He reached toward me.

I stepped back.

His hand fell to his side.

Richard cleared his throat.

“I think we should separate the questions. The key is one issue. The documents are another.

The messages are a third. Each needs to be examined on its own merits.””

My father nodded.

“Agreed.””

He turned toward Lorraine.

“Did you enter my house without permission?””

“No.””

“Did you ask anyone to enter my house?””

“No.””

“Did you know Derrick had a key?””

She hesitated.

“I knew Ariana gave him one.””

“That wasn't my question.””

Lorraine pressed her lips together.

“Yes. I knew.””

I stared at her.

“Why?””

She looked at me as if I were being deliberately difficult.

“Because he was your fiancé.””

“So you believed he could give you access to my father's house?””

“I never said that.””

“Then why did you keep the key?””

“I told you, I don't know how it got into my handbag!””

Richard raised one hand.

“Let's stop here. We cannot establish anything further without examining the circumstances.””

He turned toward Derrick.

“Do you have any messages discussing this key?””

Derrick's silence was immediate.

My father looked at him.

“Derrick?””

“I deleted some old conversations.””

Richard's expression tightened.

“When?””

“A few days ago.””

“Why?””

“Because I was clearing out my phone.””

My father looked at the phone in Derrick's hand.

“Then you should preserve whatever remains. Do not delete anything else.””

Derrick let out a frustrated breath.

“You can't order me to hand over my phone.””

“No one has asked you to hand it over,” Richard replied.

“I'm advising you not to destroy potentially relevant records.””

Derrick slipped the phone into his pocket.

Lorraine grabbed her handbag and began stuffing the spilled items back inside.

My father watched her.

“Leave the key.””

She stopped.

“What?””

“The key stays here until we determine its origin and whether it was used.””

“You cannot keep my property!””

“It's a key to my house.””

Lorraine looked toward Derrick, expecting him to intervene.

He didn't.

With a sharp movement, she placed the handbag on the table and stepped away from the key.

Then she turned toward me.

“I hope you're satisfied, Ariana. You've managed to turn one wedding into a family scandal.””

I stared at her.

“You did that yourself.””

Her face tightened.

“You don't understand what you've walked into.””

“Then explain it.””

She said nothing.

“You keep telling me I don't understand,” I continued.

“You tell me I'm naïve, emotional, and ungrateful. But every time I ask you to explain what you've done, you refuse.””

Lorraine lifted her chin.

“Some things are too complicated for you.””

I shook my head.

“No. Some things are too ugly for you to say out loud.””

Her eyes flashed.

For a moment, I thought she might strike me.

Instead, she grabbed her handbag and walked toward the entrance.

Derrick followed her two steps before stopping.

“Mother, wait.””

She spun around.

“Don't follow me.””

He looked bewildered.

“But you said—”

“I said don't follow me!””

Her voice cracked across the room.

Then she stormed through the front doors.

Derrick remained where he was.

He looked at me as if I were the only person left in the world who could save him.

“Ariana, please. I need you to understand something.””

I was exhausted.

“I'm listening.””

He swallowed.

“My mother believed your inheritance would change everything. She thought your father was going to transfer control of some assets after you married.””

“Who told her that?””

“She heard it from someone.””

“Who?””

“I don't know.””

“Derrick.””

He closed his eyes.

“She had a contact who worked with your father's business.””

My father stepped forward.

“Name.””

Derrick looked at him.

“I don't know his full name.””

“His first name?””

“Marcus.””

Walter's expression shifted.

It was subtle, but I saw it.

“Marcus what?”” he asked.

Derrick shook his head.

“I only heard my mother mention him.””

My father exchanged a look with Richard.

“What is it?”” I asked.

Walter hesitated.

“There is a Marcus who worked as an outside consultant for one of my companies several years ago. He no longer has access to our records.””

“Could he have prepared the document?””

“We don't know.””

Richard opened his briefcase again.

“Do you have any messages mentioning Marcus?””

Derrick shook his head.

“Not that I remember.””

“Then we will need to verify the name through other records.””

I looked toward the entrance where Lorraine had disappeared.

“What happens now?””

Richard answered carefully.

“Now we preserve the evidence, review the documents, and establish what happened before anyone makes further assumptions. You should also speak privately with an independent attorney about your own interests.””

I nodded.

I didn't need to know every answer that afternoon.

I needed to stop allowing other people to make decisions about my life without me.

My father placed a hand on my shoulder.

“Come home with me tonight, sweetheart.””

I looked at Derrick.

He shook his head.

“Don't do this. We can go home together.””

I took off my wedding ring.

The diamond caught the light as I held it in my palm.

Derrick stared at it.

“Ariana.””

“I need space.””

“You can't end a marriage over questions you don't have answers to.””

I looked at him.

“I'm not ending anything today. I'm choosing not to pretend everything is fine.””

I placed the ring on the table beside the legal folder.

Then I walked toward the entrance with my father.

For the first time all afternoon, nobody told me where to go.

But as we reached the doors, Richard called after us.

“Walter, one moment.””

He held up his phone.

“I just received a reply from the bank's legal department.””

My father turned.

Richard read the message twice.

Then he looked at me.

“The bank has confirmed that an authorization request was submitted under Ariana's name.””

My heart pounded.

“Was it approved?””

“No,” Richard said.

“It was flagged for verification.””

I exhaled shakily.

Then he continued.

“But there's something else. The request was submitted using contact information associated with an account that was closed last year.””

My father frowned.

“Whose account?””

Richard looked at the screen.

“Marcus Reed.””

Walter's face went pale.

I had never seen my father look frightened before.

Not when his business had suffered losses. Not when he'd undergone emergency surgery. Not even when I had called him from college after a car accident.

Now he stared at that name as if it belonged to a ghost.

“Daddy?”” I whispered.

“Who is Marcus Reed?””

He looked at me.

And after a long silence, he said, “The man who helped me build my company.””

May you like

Then he added something that made my stomach turn.

“And the man who was supposed to have died six years ago.””
