Chapter 12 - THE WOMAN WHO KNEW ABOUT LILY

The key opened a safe deposit box at an old bank downtown.
The box was registered under my father's name.
But the bank records showed it had been accessed only once.
Twenty-seven years earlier.
My father.
I stared at him.
“You knew this existed.”
“I knew there was a box.”
“But you didn't know what was inside.”
“No.”
We opened it together.
Inside was a stack of letters.
A birth certificate.
Several photographs.
And a cassette tape.
I picked up the birth certificate.
The name at the top made me stop breathing.
LILY HAYES.
Her date of birth.
Her hospital.
My name listed as father.
Claire's name listed as mother.
Everything was correct.
Except for one detail.
A handwritten notation at the bottom.
Genetic risk assessment pending.
I looked at my father.
“What is this?”
He didn't answer.
Lucas picked up the cassette.
“There might be something on here.”
We found an old player in the bank office.
The tape began.
Richard's voice.
“You think Lily's trust is the only thing that matters.”
A second voice answered.
My father's.
“No.”
Richard laughed.
“Then what?”
“The bloodline.”
Silence.
Then Richard said:
“She carries the same marker.”
My father's voice became tense.
“Leave her alone.”
“I can't.”
“Why?”
“Because your father created the trust around her.”
“And?”
“And the person who controls Lily controls the foundation.”
I stopped the tape.
I couldn't listen anymore.
My father looked at me.
“What marker?”
“I don't know.”
“Then find out.”
I stared at the documents.
There was a medical report.
It belonged to my grandfather.
It mentioned a hereditary condition.
But it wasn't a disease.
It was a genetic marker connected to ownership verification.
The family trust had been designed so that the final beneficiary could only be verified through biological lineage.
That was why Richard needed Lily.
Not just because she inherited the money.
Because she was the only person whose DNA could legally activate the final portion of the trust.
I looked at Lucas.
“And you?”
He shook his head.
“I'm not eligible.”
“Why?”
“Dad established the final trust after I was born.”
I looked at my father.
“You knew.”
“Yes.”
“And you never told me.”
“I was trying to protect Lily.”
I closed my eyes.
The same excuse.
Again.
But before I could argue, my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
“Hello?”
A woman's voice.
“You found the box.”
“Who are you?”
“You know me.”
“Victoria?”
Silence.
Then a laugh.
“You're finally catching up.”
My blood ran cold.
“Where is Lily?”
“She is safe.”
“Where?”
“Not with you.”
I ran upstairs.
Lily was in her room.
I opened the door.
Empty.
Her window was open.
Her backpack was gone.
I screamed her name.
“Lily!”
My father ran upstairs.
Lucas followed.
My hands were shaking.
“She was here.”
My father looked at the window.
“There are no footprints.”
Lucas checked the security system.
“Someone disabled the cameras.”
I grabbed my phone.
“Call the police.”
Then a video arrived.
I opened it.
Lily was sitting in a room.
She wasn't tied.
She wasn't crying.
A woman stood behind her.
Victoria.
Lily looked directly at the camera.
“Daddy.”
I nearly dropped the phone.
Victoria stepped into view.
“You have one hour.”
“What do you want?”
“The trust.”
“You'll never get it.”
“You misunderstand.”
She smiled.
“I don't want the trust.”
“What do you want?”
“The document your father kept from Richard.”
I froze.
“What document?”
“The original ownership agreement.”
I looked at my father.
He went pale.
Victoria continued.
“Bring it to the old courthouse.”
“Alone.”
“No police.”
“Or?”
She looked at Lily.
Then the screen went black.
My father grabbed my arm.
“You can't go.”
“I have to.”
“We'll make another plan.”
“There isn't time.”
Lucas stepped forward.
“I'll go with you.”
“No.”
“Mark.”
“You stay here.”
“Why?”
“Because someone needs to protect Dad.”
Lucas looked at my father.
Then nodded.
I picked up the document.
And left.
The old courthouse was abandoned.
Broken windows.
Dusty halls.
No electricity.
I walked inside.
“Victoria?”
My voice echoed.
A door opened.
She stepped out.
Lily stood behind her.
“Daddy!”
I moved forward.
Victoria raised a hand.
“Stop.”
I froze.
“Let her go.”
“Give me the document.”
I held it up.
She took it.
She opened it.
Then smiled.
“You have no idea what this does.”
“I don't care.”
She looked at Lily.
“You should.”
“Why?”
“Because this document doesn't transfer the trust.”
I stared.
“Then what?”
“It transfers control of the foundation.”
“To whom?”
She smiled.
“To Lily.”
I frowned.
“That makes no sense.”
“It does if the final clause is activated.”
“What clause?”
She held up the paper.
“The clause Richard never found.”
I stared.
Victoria's expression changed.
“He thought the trust would make him rich.”
“What does it really do?”
“It gives Lily control over every company Richard stole from.”
My heart stopped.
“And you want that.”
“No.”
She shook her head.
“I want revenge.”
“Against Richard?”
“Against everyone.”
She stepped closer.
“My mother lost everything because of your family.”
I realized.
Evelyn.
Victoria's mother.
The woman who had helped Richard.
“She blames my family.”
“She blamed herself.”
Victoria's eyes filled with tears.
“Richard destroyed her.”
“Then why help him?”
“I was young.”
“You're still helping him.”
“No.”
She shook her head.
“I've been working against him for years.”
I stared.
“What?”
She pulled out another folder.
Inside were bank records.
Evidence.
Messages.
Recordings.
Everything Richard had hidden.
“I was the person feeding information to your father.”
I couldn't believe it.
“Then why take Lily?”
“To force you to bring the final document.”
“You could have asked.”
“Would you have trusted me?”
“No.”
“Exactly.”
She looked at Lily.
“I never wanted to hurt her.”
I believed her.
Then the doors behind us opened.
Richard's men entered.
Victoria froze.
She hadn't expected them.
One man grabbed her.
Another grabbed Lily.
I moved forward.
“Let her go!”
A police siren sounded outside.
Victoria smiled.
“I called them.”
The men panicked.
Police stormed inside.
Within seconds, they were arrested.
Lily ran into my arms.
I held her tightly.
“Are you okay?”
She nodded.
“I wasn't scared.”
I laughed through tears.
“You were?”
“A little.”
Victoria stood nearby.
She looked exhausted.
I walked toward her.
“Thank you.”
She nodded.
“I owed your family the truth.”
She handed me the final folder.
“This is everything.”
I opened it.
Richard had been working with another person.
Someone far more dangerous.
The final page contained a name.
My grandfather's old business partner.
A man everyone believed had died twenty years ago.
May you like
He was alive.
And he had been funding Richard.
