Chapter 5 - THE MAN WHO WAS SUPPOSED TO BE DEAD

We drove through the night.

Mason had police vehicles following us.

Lucas sat beside me.

Claire was in the back seat.

Nobody spoke for several miles.

The address led to an abandoned farmhouse.

The property looked empty.

No lights.

No cars.

No movement.

But the front door was open.

I stepped out.

Mason stopped me.

“Stay behind us.”

I nodded.

We entered.

The house smelled old.

Dust covered the furniture.

A single lamp burned in the living room.

Then a voice came from the hallway.

“Mark.”

I froze.

I knew that voice.

I had heard it on old recordings.

I had heard it in childhood memories.

I had heard it in dreams.

My father stepped into the light.

James Hayes.

Alive.

Older.

Gray-haired.

But unmistakably my father.

My knees almost gave way.

“Dad?”

He looked at me.

“I am sorry.”

I couldn't move.

“You're alive.”

“Yes.”

“For twenty years?”

“Yes.”

“You let me believe you were dead.”

His eyes filled with tears.

“I had no choice.”

I stepped forward.

“You always had a choice.”

He nodded.

“I know.”

Lucas walked toward him.

My father looked at his older son.

For a moment, the two men simply stared at each other.

Then my father hugged him.

“I should have protected you better.”

Lucas whispered:

“You tried.”

My father turned toward me.

“I tried to protect you too.”

I shook my head.

“You abandoned us.”

“I did.”

“Why?”

“Because Richard found out about the trust.”

My father explained everything.

Twenty years earlier, he discovered that Richard had been stealing from the family.

When he confronted him, Richard threatened his children.

My father staged his death.

He disappeared.

He built evidence.

He sent secret instructions through my grandfather.

But Richard discovered the plan.

My grandfather disappeared.

Lucas was hidden.

My father remained underground.

And my mother was forced to stay silent.

I listened.

Every piece of my childhood suddenly looked different.

“Why did you come back now?”

My father looked at me.

“Because Richard made his final move.”

“Lily.”

He nodded.

“He wants control of her trust.”

“Where is she?”

My father pointed toward the hallway.

“She is safe.”

I ran.

A bedroom door opened.

Lily was sitting on a bed.

She wasn't crying.

She looked angry.

“Daddy!”

I hugged her.

“Are you okay?”

She nodded.

“Grandpa found me.”

I looked at my father.

“How?”

“He followed Richard.”

I stared.

“Where is Richard?”

My father became serious.

“He's coming.”

“What?”

“He knows I am alive.”

A sound came from outside.

Car doors.

Several of them.

Mason looked through the window.

“Vehicles.”

My father moved toward the lights.

“How many?”

“Six.”

Lucas stepped beside him.

My father looked at both of us.

“Then it's time.”

The front door opened.

Richard Hale entered.

He was calm.

Almost smiling.

Behind him stood several men.

But Richard wasn't holding a weapon.

He held a folder.

“You finally found each other.”

My father stepped forward.

“This ends tonight.”

Richard smiled.

“You said that twenty years ago.”

I stepped between them.

“Where is Claire's legal file?”

Richard looked at me.

“You still care about paperwork.”

“No.”

I raised the original trust.

“I care about what you tried to steal.”

Richard's smile disappeared.

“You don't understand the trust.”

“I understand enough.”

“No.”

He pointed toward Lily.

“You don't understand what your father did to her.”

My father stepped forward.

“Don't.”

Richard laughed.

“Tell him.”

My father said nothing.

Richard turned to me.

“Your daughter isn't just the beneficiary.”

I frowned.

“What else is she?”

Richard opened his folder.

Inside was a birth certificate.

Lily's name was at the top.

But beneath her name was another document.

A medical authorization.

Then a second trust.

I read the title.

SUCCESSOR FOUNDATION CHAIRPERSON.

Richard smiled.

“When Lily turns eighteen, she controls the entire family foundation.”

I stared.

“So?”

“Your daughter isn't just wealthy.”

He leaned closer.

“She controls everything.”

My father interrupted.

“That's why Richard wants guardianship.”

Richard nodded.

“Exactly.”

Then he pulled out another document.

A court order.

I read it.

My stomach dropped.

It was dated that morning.

Richard had already filed for emergency guardianship.

And the hearing was scheduled for the next day.

I looked at him.

“You forged this.”

“No.”

He smiled.

“Your brother signed it.”

I turned toward Daniel.

He had entered the room behind Richard.

My heart broke.

Daniel looked at me.

“I didn't have a choice.”

I stared at him.

“You always say that.”

He lowered his head.

Richard stepped forward.

“Tomorrow morning, Lily will legally become my responsibility.”

“No.”

“And once that happens…”

He smiled.

“…the trust becomes mine to manage.”

My father moved toward him.

Richard raised one hand.

Several men stepped forward.

Mason drew his weapon.

“Everyone freeze!”

Chaos erupted.

People shouted.

Lily screamed.

Claire grabbed her.

Lucas pulled me backward.

Then the lights went out.

Complete darkness.

I heard footsteps.

A door slammed.

Someone shouted.

Then a single sound echoed through the farmhouse.

Three slow knocks.

Knock.

Knock.

Knock.

The same sound Lily had heard beneath our floor.

I turned toward the darkness.

And my father's voice whispered:

“That's not Richard.”

I froze.

“Then who is it?”

My father looked toward the basement.

His face had gone pale.

“The person Richard has been hiding from us.”

A weak woman's voice rose from beneath the floor.

“Mark…”

I stopped breathing.

The voice sounded familiar.

My mother covered her mouth.

Lucas whispered:

“No.”

I looked at him.

“Who is that?”

He stared toward the floor.

Then he said the words that changed everything.

“My mother.”

I couldn't move.

Lucas's mother was supposed to have died twenty-eight years ago.

But beneath the farmhouse floor…

someone was still alive.
