Chapter 7 - DANIEL SAID HE NEVER THOUGHT OF HIMSELF AS AN ABUSER

Of course.

Most people do not.

In mediated legal interview after restraining order, Daniel said:

“I never punched her.”

True.

“I never broke bones.”

True.

“I never wanted to hurt her.”

Harder.

Then prosecutor played recording.

My voice:

“Let go of me.”

Daniel:

“Sit down and finish this.”

Then sound of furniture.

My crying.

Then:

“You’re making this worse.”

His face collapsed.

He said:

“I was trying to keep her from leaving conversation.”

That is restraint.

Then another recording:

Claire: You left bruises.

Daniel: You bruise easily.

He closed eyes.

Then:

“I sounded terrible.”

Not sounded.

Was.

Then financial.

He said he planned temporary use.

After Robert’s trust distribution, repay.

He thought I would forgive because company survived.

Then house title transfer to Evelyn LLC would be reversed.

Again temporary theft rationalization.

Then:

“Did you know signatures were forged?”

He admitted one.

The deed.

Richard told him Claire had “previously authorized broad structure.”

Daniel knew I had not signed deed itself.

He still proceeded.

Then altered will?

He claimed no knowledge of forgery.

He saw copy Richard provided and assumed authentic.

But recording showed Daniel saying:

“Mom’s lawyer found a clause we can use.”

Not enough to prove he knew false.

Later forensic evidence: Richard sent message:

Use revised estate summary, not original.

Daniel asked:

Will Claire know difference?

Richard:

Not unless she compares.

There.

That was bad.

Maybe not explicit "forged," but knew something concealed.

Then domestic violence charges.

Depending jurisdiction, assault/battery, unlawful restraint/coercive control not everywhere statutory. We can keep broad: assault-related and unlawful restraint counts, financial fraud/forgery conspiracy.

Daniel eventually pleaded to financial fraud, use of forged documents, unlawful restraint/assault-related conduct where proved.

Meaningful sentence/probation, restitution, no contact.

No attempted murder.

Then I filed divorce.

He cried.

Asked therapy.

Too late for marriage.

Therapy could help him.

Not access to me.

Then he asked:

“Was any of it real?”

Marriage.

I answered:

“Yes.”

That made him cry harder.

Love can coexist with abuse.

That does not make abuse less.

Then:

“Do you hate me?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because I don’t want to spend that much energy.”

True.

Then:

“Will you forgive?”

“Maybe.”

He looked hopeful.

I continued:

“Forgiveness won’t restore marriage.”

May you like

He nodded.

Finally understanding difference.
