Chapter 9 - I WENT BACK TO THE HOUSE ONLY AFTER IT FELT LIKE MINE AGAIN

For six months I did not sleep there.
Even though legally mine.
Rooms held memory.
Bedroom.
Hallway.
Doorways Daniel blocked.
I rented apartment.
People asked:
“Why let him take your house emotionally?”
Because recovery not property contest.
Then restraining order meant Daniel could not enter.
Evelyn/Vanessa no access.
Locks changed.
Cameras.
But still.
I waited.
Then one afternoon I entered with therapist? Maybe sister.
I opened windows.
Took down family photos.
Not all.
Kept some wedding? No need.
Then bedroom.
I replaced bed.
Not because object cursed.
Because I wanted change.
Then dining room where papers had been spread.
Turned into reading room.
The house gradually mine.
No dramatic burning.
Then I sold it two years later.
People thought surprising.
Mom left.
But I realized preserving property not preserving her.
I bought smaller home near work.
Invested proceeds under independent advice.
No guilt.
Then career.
I had paused after Mom death? Could return.
No heiress CEO. Maybe I worked in nonprofit architecture? Not relevant.
I built ordinary life.
Then relationship with Dad.
Closer, but boundaries.
He asked before giving advice.
Usually.
Sometimes forgot.
I said:
“Dad.”
He stopped.
Growth.
Then Evelyn later wrote apology.
Specific:
I saw bruises and chose my son’s explanation because it protected the future I wanted.
Then:
I called your refusal unstable because accepting your no would have forced us to face our debt.
Good.
I read.
No reply.
Vanessa wrote too.
I replied once:
Do not contact me again.
May you like
She complied.
Boundary.
