Chapter 5: The Brother I Never Knew

The man standing in front of me looked like a stranger.

But somehow, I saw pieces of my father in him.

The same calm eyes.

The same way he stood with his shoulders slightly back.

The same expression that suggested he knew something everyone else didn’t.

And that terrified me.

Because my entire life, I had believed I was my father’s only child.

I had been the person who carried his last name.

The person who inherited his memories.

The person who sat beside him during his final months.

But now a stranger was standing in front of me, claiming to be his son.

My brother.

The ballroom had gone completely silent again.

It seemed every secret in my family had decided to reveal itself in the same room.

The man extended his hand.

“I’m Alexander Vale.””

I stared at his hand.

I didn’t take it.

“You expect me to believe that?””

His expression didn’t change.

“No.””

That answer surprised me.

He lowered his hand.

“I wouldn’t believe it either.””

My mother stepped forward.

“Alexander, you shouldn’t be here.””

His eyes moved toward her.

The temperature in the room seemed to drop.

“Hello, Evelyn.””

My mother looked like she had seen a ghost.

“You don’t understand what you’re doing.””

Alexander gave a small, humorless smile.

“No. I understand exactly what I’m doing.””

Emma moved closer to me.

Quietly, she whispered:

“Do you want me to get the kids out?””

I looked at Noah and Lily.

They were still near the wall, holding hands.

They had witnessed enough for one night.

I nodded.

“Please.””

Emma guided them away from the crowd.

As she passed my mother, she stopped.

“You should be ashamed.””

My mother didn’t respond.

She couldn’t.

Because for once, there was nothing she could say to make herself look innocent.

When Emma disappeared into the hallway with the children, I turned back to Alexander.

“Start talking.””

He looked at my mother.

“She never told you?””

“No.””

He nodded slowly.

“I figured.””

The sadness in his voice confused me.

“You figured?””

Alexander looked around the ballroom.

“At some point, I stopped being surprised by what Evelyn was willing to hide.””

My mother’s face hardened.

“Watch your words.””

Alexander laughed softly.

“That’s exactly what you told me when I was twenty-two.””

My chest tightened.

Twenty-two.

He knew her.

Not recently.

Years ago.

“How long have you known my mother?””

Alexander looked at me.

“Almost my entire life.””

The answer hit harder than I expected.

My mother had a whole relationship with this man.

A whole history.

And I had never heard his name.

“Who are you?””

Alexander took a breath.

“My mother’s name was Sarah.””

My mother looked away.

I noticed.

“You knew that name.””

She didn’t answer.

Alexander continued.

“Your father met my mother before he married Evelyn.””

The guests around us began whispering again.

I barely heard them.

My entire focus was on him.

“My father cheated?””

Alexander’s jaw tightened.

“I didn’t come here to destroy your image of him.””

“But you just told me he had another child.””

“Yes.””

“Then what am I supposed to think?””

Alexander looked at me.

“The truth is more complicated than betrayal.””

I hated that sentence.

Because every person who had lied to me tonight had used some version of it.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

Alexander nodded.

“Because it’s true.””

He opened the leather folder he carried.

Inside were documents.

Old documents.

Photographs.

Letters.

He removed one picture and handed it to me.

I looked down.

My father.

Younger.

Standing beside a woman I had never seen.

And a small child.

A boy.

Alexander.

I felt sick.

Not because the picture existed.

Because my father was smiling.

I had never seen this picture.

My father had never shown me this part of his life.

“Why didn’t he tell me?””

Alexander’s expression softened.

“Because he was afraid.””

“Of what?””

He looked at my mother.

“Her.””

My mother immediately stepped forward.

“That is a lie.””

Alexander turned toward her.

“Is it?””

She said nothing.

I looked between them.

“What happened?””

Nobody answered.

Then Alexander said:

“Your father found out that money was disappearing from his company.””

My heart sank.

The same thing my father had mentioned on the phone.

“Who was stealing?””

Alexander looked at my mother.

Again.

I felt the answer before he spoke.

“Evelyn wasn’t stealing alone.””

My mother’s eyes narrowed.

“Don’t.””

Alexander ignored her.

“She had help.””

“Who?””

He reached into the folder.

He pulled out another document.

Then he handed it to me.

At the top was a company name.

A company I recognized.

My father’s private investment firm.

Below it were transaction records.

Large amounts of money.

Transferred over several years.

My hands tightened around the paper.

“Why are you showing me this?””

“Because your father wanted you to know before it was too late.””

“Too late for what?””

Alexander looked toward the entrance.

Then back at me.

“For them to erase the evidence.””

A chill moved through me.

“Who is them?””

Before he could answer, my mother spoke.

“Daniel, don’t listen to him.””

I looked at her.

“Why?””

“Because he wants what your father left behind.””

Alexander laughed quietly.

“There it is.””

“What?””

“The thing she always does.””

He pointed at my mother.

“When she can’t control the truth, she attacks the person telling it.””

My mother’s voice became sharp.

“You have no idea what I did to protect this family.””

Alexander’s expression changed.

“And you have no idea what I lost because of your choices.””

The words were quiet.

But they carried years of anger.

I looked at Alexander.

“What did you lose?””

For the first time, he looked away.

“My mother died believing your father abandoned her.””

Nobody spoke.

He continued.

“She spent her entire life waiting for him to come back.””

My mother closed her eyes.

I could see the guilt.

Real guilt.

Not the performance she had shown earlier.

Something deeper.

“But my father didn’t abandon her?””

Alexander looked at me.

“No.””

“Then what happened?””

He took a breath.

“Your mother found out about me.””

My mother looked down.

“She gave your father a choice.””

My stomach tightened.

“What choice?””

Alexander’s voice became colder.

“Me or you.””

I felt the room disappear.

“She made him choose?””

Alexander nodded.

“And he chose you.””

The words should have made me feel better.

They didn’t.

Because they came with a terrible question.

“What happened to him?””

Alexander looked at the phone in my hand.

“Your father tried to expose what Evelyn had done.””

My mother whispered:

“Stop.””

Alexander continued.

“He was planning to transfer control of the company and protect both of his children.””

“Both?””

“Yes.””

He looked at me.

“You.””

Then he tapped the documents.

“And me.””

I stared at the papers.

The protection clause.

The hidden agreement.

The secret son.

Everything my father had left behind was pointing toward one thing.

He had been trying to fix something before he disappeared.

But my mother had buried the truth.

My phone suddenly vibrated.

Everyone looked at it.

Unknown number.

A message appeared.

I opened it.

My heart stopped.

It was a photograph.

A photograph of my father.

Alive.

Sitting in a room I didn’t recognize.

Below it were five words.

*Ask Alexander why he lied.*

I looked up.

Alexander’s face had changed.

For the first time that night, he looked afraid.

“Who sent that?””

I turned the phone toward him.

He stared at the picture.

Then whispered:

“No.””

“What?””

He stepped closer.

His voice dropped.

“That’s impossible.””

“Why?””

He looked at me.

Because whoever sent the message knew something Alexander had never told anyone.

Something that changed the entire story.

“He isn’t the only one who survived.””

I froze.

“Who?””

Alexander looked toward the dark hallway behind the ballroom.

May you like

Then he said:

“The person who tried to kill your father.””
