Chapter 9: The Truth Beneath the House
The darkness lasted only a few seconds.
But those seconds felt endless.
The ballroom lights flickered back on one by one.
Guests screamed.
Security guards moved toward the exits.
Children cried.
And through all of it, I stood completely still.
Because my father’s voice was still in my head.
*Daniel… if you can hear this, run.*
Not hide.
Not fight.
Run.
My father had always been calm.
Even when things were difficult.
Even when he lost everything.
He was the person who taught me that panic made people careless.
So if he was telling me to run…
I knew it meant something was very wrong.
Emma grabbed my arm.
“Daniel.””
I looked at her.
“What did you know?””
Her eyes filled with regret.
“I should have told you sooner.””
“Yes.””
The answer came faster than I expected.
She nodded.
“I know.””
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
The room around us was chaos.
But the only thing I could focus on was the woman standing in front of me.
My wife.
The person my father trusted.
The person who had protected my children.
The person who had hidden a three-year investigation from me.
“I need the truth.””
Emma nodded.
“You deserve it.””
Victor stepped closer.
“We don’t have much time.””
I looked at him.
“You knew this would happen?””
“No.””
“Then why did you look scared before the lights went out?””
Victor didn’t answer.
That silence bothered me.
Everyone had an explanation.
Everyone had a reason.
Everyone had a secret.
I was tired of being the last person to know.
Marcus laughed from where the guards held him.
“You still don’t understand, do you?””
I turned.
“What?””
He looked around the room.
“You think this is about Evelyn.””
My mother looked at him.
“You helped me.””
Marcus smiled.
“No.””
Her face changed.
“I thought you said—”
“I said what you wanted to hear.””
The room became silent.
My mother stared at him.
“You set me up?””
Marcus shrugged.
“You were already setting yourself up.””
That was the first time I saw my mother truly understand.
She had never been in control.
She had only believed she was.
Marcus looked at me.
“Your family has spent years fighting over secrets.””
He smiled.
“And while you were all fighting, someone else was cleaning up the evidence.””
“Who?””
Marcus didn’t answer.
Instead, he looked at Victor.
Victor’s expression hardened.
“Don’t.””
Marcus laughed.
“You’re still pretending?””
I looked between them.
“What is he talking about?””
Victor looked away.
Emma stepped forward.
“Daniel…”
“No.””
I stopped her.
“Everyone gets one chance.””
I pointed toward Marcus.
“Then him.””
I pointed toward Victor.
“Then him.””
I looked at my mother.
“Then you.””
My voice dropped.
“But nobody lies again.””
Nobody argued.
Marcus leaned against the guard beside him.
“Your father discovered Thomas Reed wasn’t acting alone.””
My stomach tightened.
“Who was with him?””
Marcus smiled.
“The person closest to him.””
My eyes moved toward Victor.
Victor immediately shook his head.
“No.””
Marcus continued.
“Thomas had access to the company because someone gave him access.””
“Who?””
Marcus looked directly at Victor.
“Your uncle.””
The room exploded with whispers.
I stared at Victor.
“No.””
Victor’s face was pale.
“He’s lying.””
Marcus laughed.
“You really thought Richard never found out?””
Victor stepped forward.
“I tried to help him.””
“After you helped destroy him?””
Victor’s jaw tightened.
“I made mistakes.””
The words shocked me.
Not because he admitted it.
Because he didn’t deny it.
I looked at him.
“What mistakes?””
Victor looked at the floor.
“I was desperate.””
“For money?””
He nodded.
“Years ago.””
My chest tightened.
“So Dad knew?””
“Yes.””
“And he still trusted you?””
Victor looked at me.
“Your father believed people could change.””
I almost laughed.
“My father believed that?””
“Yes.””
Victor looked at the floor.
“Because he had changed too.””
That stopped me.
“What does that mean?””
Victor looked at Emma.
Then me.
“Your father’s biggest regret was not telling you the truth sooner.””
A guard approached.
“Mr. Carter, we need to leave this area.””
But before anyone moved, Emma spoke.
“The recording.””
Everyone looked at her.
“What recording?”” I asked.
She pulled the small envelope from earlier.
“The final message.””
My heart raced.
“You said there were three.””
Emma nodded.
“I never opened the third.””
“Why?””
“Because your father said it should only be opened when all the people involved were together.””
She looked around the room.
“Everyone he named is here.””
My mother.
Victor.
Alexander.
Marcus.
And me.
Emma opened the envelope.
Inside was a small memory card.
She connected it to her phone.
A video appeared.
My father sat in the same study.
But this time, he looked different.
Not afraid.
Determined.
“Daniel.””
My throat tightened hearing him.
“If you’re watching this, then the truth has finally reached you.””
He paused.
“I’m sorry.””
I looked down.
My father continued.
“I spent years trying to protect you from the choices of the people around me.””
His eyes lowered.
“But protecting you became another way of keeping you in the dark.””
My eyes burned.
“I need you to know something.””
The video changed.
A file appeared.
A document.
A signature.
Then my father spoke again.
“Your mother did not cause my disappearance.””
Everyone looked surprised.
My mother especially.
“She made terrible choices. She lied. She hurt people.””
My mother looked down.
“But she did one thing right.””
The video paused.
My father looked directly into the camera.
“She protected Daniel.””
I stared.
Emma squeezed my hand.
My father continued.
“The person who arranged everything was someone I trusted.””
The screen changed.
A name appeared.
I stopped breathing.
Because it wasn’t Victor.
It wasn’t my mother.
It wasn’t Marcus.
It was someone else.
Someone I had never suspected.
Someone who had been standing quietly beside us all night.
Alexander.
The room went silent.
Alexander stepped back.
“No.””
My father’s voice continued.
“Alexander was manipulated into believing I betrayed him.””
I looked at Alexander.
His face had gone white.
“But he was not the person controlling the operation.””
The screen changed again.
Another document appeared.
A bank transfer.
A name.
Thomas Reed.
And beneath it…
A second name.
The person who received the money.
My eyes widened.
Because I knew that name.
Everyone knew that name.
It belonged to someone who had been helping my family for years.
Someone who had stood beside my father.
Someone who had always claimed to protect me.
My father’s final words played.
“Daniel, the person who destroyed our family is not outside it.””
A pause.
“They are already inside.””
The video ended.
Nobody spoke.
I looked around the room.
At every face.
Every person who had lied.
Every person who had hidden something.
Then my eyes stopped on the person whose name appeared on the document.
The person standing closest to me.
The person who had been helping all night.
The person I trusted.
My blood ran cold.
Because the truth was worse than any betrayal I imagined.
The person who arranged my father’s disappearance…
Was not my mother.
Not Victor.
Not Alexander.
May you like
It was Emma’s father.
And Emma knew.
