Chapter 4: The Video That Changed Everything

I watched the video three times before I understood what I was seeing.

My mother was sitting at our kitchen table, wearing the same lavender cardigan she'd worn on her birthday.

Vanessa stood behind her.

A document lay between them.

“Just sign here, Margaret,” Vanessa said.

My mother looked down.

“What is it?””

“It's a medical authorization. It allows me to help with your appointments and medication.””

My mother adjusted her glasses.

“Why does Daniel need to sign this?””

“He's busy. I'm trying to make things easier for everyone.””

“But Daniel is my son.””

Vanessa leaned forward and placed a pen beside her hand.

“And I'm his wife. We're family, Margaret.””

My mother didn't pick up the pen.

“Can I read it first?””

Vanessa's smile disappeared.

“You've already read it.””

“No, I haven't.””

“Margaret, we've been over this.””

My mother pushed the paper away.

“I want Daniel to see it.””

Vanessa stood motionless.

Then she picked up the document and placed it back in front of her.

“Your memory isn't what it used to be. You asked me about this yesterday.””

My mother looked confused.

“Did I?””

“Yes.””

There was a long silence.

Then my mother asked something that made my blood run cold.

“Why are you so angry with me?””

Vanessa bent down until her face was inches from my mother's.

“Because you make everything difficult.””

The video ended.

I stood inside Mr. Whitmore's office, staring at the black screen.

My hands were shaking.

“Was that recorded before the symptoms began?”” he asked.

“Two days before.””

He removed his glasses.

“Daniel, preserve the original video. Don't edit it, forward it unnecessarily, or delete anything. It may be important evidence.””

I nodded.

Then I called Nia.

She answered immediately.

“Dad?””

“Sweetheart, where are you?””

“I'm in the laundry room.””

“Lock the door.””

“I did.””

“Is Mom still there?””

“Yes. She's looking through Grandma's papers.””

I closed my eyes.

“Listen carefully. Don't argue with her. Don't touch anything. I'm coming home.””

Nia whispered, “Dad?””

“Yes?””

“Mom knows about the videos.””

My stomach tightened.

“What videos?””

“The ones I recorded when Grandma was acting strange.””

“How many?””

“Lots.””

“Where are they?””

“On my tablet. But Mom found the tablet last night.””

I looked at Mr. Whitmore.

He was already reaching for his phone.

“Do you still have copies?”” I asked.

Nia hesitated.

“Yes.””

“Where?””

“I sent them to Grandma's old email account.””

I almost stopped breathing.

“Why?””

“Because Mom doesn't know the password.””

For the first time that morning, I felt a flicker of hope.

“Good thinking, sweetheart.””

Then she said, “Dad, I think Mom knows where I hid the backup.””

The call ended abruptly.

I grabbed my keys.

When I reached home, the front door was unlocked.

I entered quietly.

The house smelled of Vanessa's expensive perfume and freshly brewed coffee.

“Nia?””

No answer.

I hurried toward the laundry room.

The door was open.

My daughter was gone.

On the washing machine sat her pink notebook.

Beside it was a piece of paper.

Three words were written across it.

*Ask Marcus about Dad.*

I read it twice.

Then I heard footsteps upstairs.

“Daniel?””

Vanessa appeared at the top of the staircase.

She was holding a thick blue folder.

Her hair was perfectly arranged. She wore a cream-colored blouse and the diamond earrings I'd bought her for our tenth anniversary.

She looked like the woman I'd married.

That was the most frightening part.

“Where's Nia?”” I demanded.

“She went to school.””

“School ended hours ago.””

“She asked to stay with a friend.””

“Which friend?””

Vanessa descended the stairs.

“Why are you interrogating me?””

“Because I called her, and she told me you found her recordings.””

Vanessa stopped.

For a second, neither of us moved.

Then she placed the blue folder on the dining table.

“Daniel, we need to talk.””

“About the medication?””

“About your mother.””

“About the forged documents?””

Her face hardened.

“You've been speaking to Whitmore.””

It wasn't a question.

I stared at her.

“How do you know that?””

“Because he's been trying to interfere in our family for years.””

“Our family?””

“Yes. Our family. The family you seem determined to destroy over a woman who doesn't even remember your name.””

I stepped closer.

“Don't talk about my mother like that.””

Vanessa opened the folder.

Inside were photocopies of medical forms, property records, and a document bearing my mother's signature.

“Look,” she said.

“Your mother authorized me to help her.””

“Then why does the signature look different?””

“She was unwell.””

“Why was the document never witnessed by an independent attorney?””

“Because it wasn't necessary.””

“Why did Whitmore reject your application?””

Vanessa's eyes narrowed.

“Because he's an old man who wants to control everything.””

I picked up the document.

At the bottom was Marcus's signature.

I held it toward her.

“Your brother witnessed this?””

“Yes.””

“Did he actually see Mom sign it?””

Vanessa didn't answer.

Then I asked the question I'd been avoiding.

“Where's Nia?””

She crossed her arms.

“I told you. She's at a friend's.””

I pulled out my phone.

“I'm calling the police.””

Vanessa suddenly reached for the blue folder.

“Don't.””

I stepped back.

She grabbed the folder and clutched it against her chest.

“Daniel, you don't understand what you're doing.””

“Then explain it.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

But something about them felt wrong.

“I was trying to protect us.””

“From what?””

“From losing everything.””

I stared at her.

Then my phone rang.

It was Nia.

“Dad,” she whispered.

“I'm at Grandma's neighbor's house.””

I exhaled.

“Are you safe?””

“Yes. But Dad…”

“What?””

“Uncle Marcus is here.””

My eyes moved toward Vanessa.

She had gone completely still.

May you like

And then Nia whispered:

“He brought the original papers.””
