Chapter 5 - THE BABY WAS NOT A PEACE TREATY

As Elena’s pregnancy progressed, gossip grew.

Some family members assumed we would marry.

No.

I said publicly only:

“Elena Morales is carrying my child. We are co-parenting. Her trust matter is separate.”

Good.

Then privately, I wanted more.

I liked her.

I had before.

But now every emotion contaminated by guilt, pregnancy, money, family scandal.

Elena said:

“I need to know you want me when there is no crisis.”

So we waited.

No dates initially.

Prenatal appointments.

Co-parenting classes.

Lawyers.

Therapy separately.

Then I learned more.

The night we slept together, Elena had been grieving Dad’s death too.

Robert was grandfather emotionally.

We comforted each other.

Not ideal foundation.

Then she said:

“I was lonely.”

“So was I.”

No fairy-tale.

Then baby born.

Sophie Morales Walker.

Both surnames.

Elena chose Sophie.

I asked to include Walker.

She agreed because paternity/identity, not ownership.

Margaret not at hospital.

Her choice? We did not invite.

Rosa came.

Samuel maybe no.

Sophie healthy.

I held.

No speech about heir.

Just baby.

Then trust.

Sophie, as my biological child, automatically became beneficiary of Ethan branch. But separate.

Elena’s restored branch unrelated.

No merging.

Good.

Then Margaret sent bracelet.

Elena returned.

Not ready.

Then a letter.

She read later.

I am sorry I called your child a disgrace before knowing—or caring—who father was. That would have been wrong even if Ethan were not father.

Specific.

Good.

Then:

I am sorry I treated your pregnancy like a threat to property.

Then:

I am sorry for what I did to Lucia.

That was bigger.

Elena cried.

No reply.

Then Margaret’s legal case.

She accepted plea? Current perjury/use of forged document and attempted interference with medical testing? Could be civil/probation.

Given age and evidence, she pleaded to falsifying sworn trust records/attempted obstruction, paid restitution, probation/home confinement, barred fiduciary roles.

No prison melodrama necessarily.

Old acts used context but time-barred.

She also made formal correction statement:

Lucia did not steal.

Family archive updated.

Important.

Then Charles’s descendants? His branch benefited from old theft? Charles had caused 420k. His estate repaid? He died years ago. Estate records showed restitution by Robert privately perhaps. Fine.

The public family history changed.

Lucia’s name restored.

Not “thief.”

Elena cared more than money.

Then she put mother’s photo in apartment.

Not mansion.

Then I asked:

“Do you forgive my mother?”

“No.”

Fair.

“Maybe someday.”

No pressure.

Then she asked me:

“Do you forgive your father?”

“I don’t know.”

Parallel.

Then Sophie grew.

At six months? Time jump.

Elena and I started dating a year after birth.

Slow.

No employer relationship.

Separate finances.

No secret.

Then Margaret found out.

She did not interfere.

Progress through restraint.

She asked:

“Can I meet Sophie?”

Elena said supervised/public.

Margaret accepted.

First meeting:

She did not grab baby.

Asked.

“May I hold her?”

Elena looked at me.

Then said yes.

Permission.

Margaret cried.

Then looked at Sophie.

“She has Lucia’s eyes.”

Elena stiffened.

Margaret corrected:

May you like

“That is not a bad thing.”

That mattered.
