Chapter 9 - ETHAN FINALLY READ THE LETTERS HIS FATHER NEVER SENT

Dad had written me several unsent letters.

Samuel found archive.

One:

Ethan, if I tell you about Lucia, your mother will say I am destroying family.

Then:

A family already damaged by truth cannot be protected by lies.

He knew.

Yet delayed.

Then:

Elena works in house because I offered her a place and then died before I could give her one with dignity.

That hurt.

He had asked Elena to come before death, promising foundation job.

Then cancer worsened.

Margaret demoted to maid.

Dad knew some?

Perhaps not full.

Then:

If you become close to Elena, tell her truth before closeness becomes another secret.

He anticipated? Maybe he saw chemistry.

That's too contrived.

Skip.

Then another:

Do not mistake guilt for love if you ever learn what I did.

Important for Ethan/Elena relationship too.

Ethan did not marry from guilt.

Then Dad:

I loved Lucia. I failed her because standing against my father and wife at same time felt too expensive.

Then:

Cowardice is often just a calculation where someone else pays.

Strong.

Ethan kept.

Then he asked Elena:

“Do you hate Dad?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because hate would make him too important.”

Interesting.

Then:

“I am angry.”

Enough.

Then they visited Lucia's grave.

Ethan brought nothing dramatic.

He said:

“I’m sorry.”

Elena stood.

Then:

“She never met you.”

“I know.”

Then she told stories.

Lucia loved Motown.

Burned rice.

Hated rich houses.

Ethan laughed.

A person, not scandal.

Then family archive changed.

No “Lucia the thief.”

Documented:

Adopted daughter of Robert Walker and Ana Morales; wrongly accused in family-office scandal; later exonerated.

That was public correction.

Then Elena said:

“That means more than plaque.”

No plaque.

Just record.

Then Sophie eventually asked to use Morales as middle name.

Her choice.

Sophie Morales Walker already had both.

Good.

Then Ethan realized baby paternity twist had brought everything out, but Elena's dignity did not depend on baby being his.

He told her:

“My mother was wrong before test.”

Elena smiled.

“That took you long enough.”

Because Margaret had humiliated pregnant employee even if father stranger.

May you like

Yes.

Then this becomes final theme.
