Chapter 7: The Daughter My Father Hid
Daniel read the message again.
Then he looked at the photograph in his hand.
Emily.
Lily.
Two people he had never known existed.
His father had been dead for twelve years, yet somehow the past had just walked into our home and demanded an explanation.
"Who is she?"" he whispered.
Patricia stood beside the bedroom door, twisting the edge of her blanket.
"I told you. Your father had a daughter before he met me.""
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"Because it would have destroyed everything.""
Daniel stared at her.
"What exactly would it have destroyed?""
Patricia looked toward me.
"Your marriage. Your relationship with Brooke. Everything.""
I stepped forward.
"Stop looking at me. This is about your son.""
Patricia ignored me.
"Your father was a complicated man. He made promises he couldn't keep.""
Daniel lifted the photograph.
"Then why does Emily have his face? Why does that little girl look exactly like him?""
Patricia swallowed.
"Because she's family.""
"Where is she?""
"I don't know.""
Daniel looked at his phone.
"She just contacted me.""
Patricia's face changed.
"What?""
He showed her the message.
For several seconds, she couldn't speak.
Then she reached for his phone.
"Don't answer that.""
Daniel pulled it away.
"Why?""
"Because you don't know who you're dealing with.""
I folded my arms.
"That's an interesting thing to say when you've spent months hiding information about her.""
Patricia turned sharply.
"You have no idea what happened!""
"Then tell us.""
She looked at Daniel.
"Emily's mother was involved with your father before he married me. She wanted money. She wanted a comfortable life. When your father refused, she threatened to take him to court.""
Daniel frowned.
"Did Dad acknowledge her?""
Patricia hesitated.
"He did.""
"Did he support her?""
"Sometimes.""
"Did he meet Lily?""
Patricia looked away.
"Yes.""
Daniel took a step backward.
"Then why did you tell me he left everything to you?""
Patricia's voice broke.
"Because I wanted you to have a normal life.""
He laughed bitterly.
"A normal life? You've spent twelve years hiding my sister and her daughter!""
Patricia suddenly raised her voice.
"Your father was dying! I was trying to keep this family together!""
"And what about Emily's family?""
Patricia had no answer.
Daniel didn't sleep that night.
He sat at the kitchen table with the photograph, the notebook, and his father's letter spread in front of him.
I brought him coffee.
He barely touched it.
"I keep thinking about the last time Dad and I spoke," he said.
"What happened?""
"He was in the hospital. I was leaving after visiting him. He asked me to promise something.""
"What?""
"That I would always look after Mom.""
Daniel stared at the photograph.
"I promised him. I thought that meant making sure she was comfortable. I never imagined she would use that promise to manipulate me.""
I sat opposite him.
"You can't carry responsibility for choices she made.""
He rubbed his eyes.
"Do you think Emily is telling the truth?""
"I think we need to hear her side.""
He opened the message again.
*Daniel:* I received your message. Who are you, and what do you want?
The reply arrived almost immediately.
*Emily:* I'm Robert's daughter. I have proof. But I need to know whether you are alone.
Daniel looked at me.
I nodded.
He typed.
*Daniel:* I'm with my wife. You can speak to both of us.
Three dots appeared.
Then disappeared.
Then a photograph arrived.
It showed a little girl standing beside an elderly man in a hospital room.
Daniel immediately recognized his father.
His hand flew to his mouth.
The little girl was holding a stuffed rabbit.
On the back of the photograph, someone had written a date.
Three weeks before Robert died.
Another message appeared.
*Emily:* Dad told me he had arranged something for me and Lily. He said Patricia knew about it. After he died, the payments stopped. When I tried to contact the family, Brooke told me he had left nothing.
Daniel stared at the screen.
"She was there," he whispered.
"Who?""
"Brooke. She knew Dad had met Emily.""
His phone rang.
Emily.
He answered.
"Hello?""
A woman's voice came through.
"Daniel?""
"Yes.""
"My name is Emily. I'm sorry to contact you like this.""
Daniel closed his eyes.
"You're my sister?""
There was a long pause.
"Yes.""
He struggled to speak.
"Why didn't anyone tell me?""
Emily gave a quiet laugh.
"Your mother told me you didn't want to know me.""
Daniel looked horrified.
"What?""
"She said you were angry about Dad's past. She told me not to contact you because it would hurt your marriage.""
I felt Daniel's hand tighten around the phone.
"That's not true.""
"I know that now.""
Emily took a breath.
"Daniel, I didn't contact you because of money. I contacted you because something happened to my daughter.""
Daniel sat upright.
"What happened?""
"Lily was admitted to hospital last month. We needed financial records for a family medical matter, and I started looking through Dad's old paperwork.""
Her voice trembled.
"I found a letter from him. It mentioned a trust.""
Daniel looked at his father's letter.
"Was it the same trust?""
"Yes. But there was another document. It said that part of the inheritance was supposed to be reserved for me and Lily.""
Daniel went silent.
Rebecca had mentioned an inheritance.
But nobody had mentioned a second beneficiary.
Emily continued.
"Your father promised he would make sure Lily was protected. Patricia told me the money had been exhausted by medical expenses.""
Daniel looked at the bank statement.
"How much were you supposed to receive?""
"Three hundred thousand dollars.""
He slowly lowered his head.
Three hundred thousand.
A significant portion of the missing trust funds.
"Emily," he whispered, "I think my mother and sister took it.""
She didn't respond immediately.
Then she said:
"There's something else. Brooke came to see me two weeks ago.""
Daniel looked up.
"Why?""
"She offered me money to sign a document.""
"What document?""
"A statement saying Dad had never promised me anything and that I had no claim against the estate.""
Daniel stood so quickly his chair scraped across the floor.
"Did you sign it?""
"No.""
"Good.""
Emily lowered her voice.
"Because Brooke told me if I refused, she would make sure nobody in the family ever believed me.""
The following afternoon, Daniel and I met Emily at a small café near the hospital where her daughter had received treatment.
She arrived carrying a folder.
She was in her late thirties, with Robert's unmistakable eyes and a nervous habit of twisting her wedding ring.
Daniel stood when he saw her.
For several seconds, they simply stared at each other.
Then Emily whispered, "You look like him.""
Daniel's eyes filled.
"So do you.""
They sat down.
Emily placed the folder on the table.
"I brought everything.""
Inside were letters from Robert, copies of trust documents, and several bank statements.
One letter was addressed to Emily.
My dear Emily,
I know I cannot undo the years we have lost. But I want you to know that I have never forgotten you. I have made financial arrangements to protect you and Lily. Patricia knows about these arrangements, and I hope she will respect my wishes.
Daniel read the letter twice.
His fingers trembled.
Emily wiped her eyes.
"He wanted to introduce us before he died. But he got sick too quickly.""
Daniel looked at her.
"Why didn't you contact me directly?""
"I tried.""
She opened another folder.
Inside were several returned letters.
All addressed to Daniel.
All marked undeliverable or returned to sender.
Daniel stared at them.
"These were sent to my old address.""
Emily nodded.
"Brooke told me she would pass them along.""
He closed his eyes.
"She never did.""
Emily looked down.
"Daniel, I don't want to destroy your family. I just want what Dad promised Lily.""
Daniel reached across the table.
"You haven't destroyed anything. The people who hid you did that.""
Then Emily slid one final document toward him.
It was a bank transfer record.
The recipient account belonged to Northbridge Holdings.
The transfer amount was $300,000.
The date was eleven years earlier.
Daniel looked at the account details.
Then he looked at Emily.
"Brooke received your inheritance?""
Emily nodded.
"Yes.""
Before Daniel could respond, his phone rang.
Brooke.
He answered.
Her voice was sharp.
"Where are you?""
Daniel looked at Emily.
"Why?""
"Because I know you've been talking to her.""
Daniel's face hardened.
"How?""
Brooke gave a cold laugh.
"Mom told me everything.""
May you like
Then she said something that made him grip the edge of the table.
"If you keep digging, you'll discover that Dad wasn't the only person who kept secrets.""
