Chapter 9: The Name on the Original Will

The following morning, Daniel and I arrived at Rebecca's office before nine.

He carried his father's letters in a brown folder.

I carried the black notebook.

Neither of us had slept properly.

Rebecca greeted us and immediately asked Daniel to sit.

"I've spoken with a solicitor who handled your father's estate," she said.

"Mr. Bennett?"" Daniel asked.

"Yes. He has agreed to provide a statement and release copies of the records he retained.""

Daniel leaned forward.

"What did he tell you?""

Rebecca opened a folder.

"Your father anticipated that someone might attempt to interfere with the trust after his death. He therefore arranged for a separate copy of the original agreement to be held by his solicitor.""

Daniel looked relieved.

"Then the original still exists?""

"Yes.""

Rebecca placed several documents on the desk.

"There's something else. Your father appointed a successor trustee.""

Daniel glanced at the page.

"Who?""

Rebecca turned it toward him.

The name was clearly printed.

*NIA CARTER.*

I stared.

"What?""

Daniel looked at me.

Then back at Rebecca.

"Why is my wife named?""

Rebecca adjusted her glasses.

"According to the document, your father selected Nia as an independent trustee in the event that his original trustee became unable or unwilling to perform her duties.""

I shook my head.

"I barely knew Robert.""

"Apparently, he knew you well enough to trust your judgment.""

Daniel looked confused.

"But my mother was the trustee.""

"Initially, yes. However, the document includes a succession provision.""

Rebecca pointed to the next paragraph.

"If Patricia failed to provide proper financial accounting, misused trust funds, or attempted to alter beneficiary rights without authorization, the successor trustee could request an independent review.""

Daniel stared at the page.

"Does that mean Nia can protect the money?""

"Potentially, subject to the governing documents and applicable law. We need to verify the complete records before acting.""

I looked at Daniel.

"Why would your father choose me?""

He shook his head.

"I don't know.""

Rebecca turned to another page.

"There's a letter explaining his decision.""

She handed it to me.

The handwriting was Robert's.

I recognized it from the letters Emily had shown us.

Nia,

If you are ever reading this, I hope it means my son has found someone who loves him for the person he is, not for what he owns.

I have watched you with Daniel and Maya. You have a steady heart, and you understand that family is built through actions, not simply blood.

I am naming you as successor trustee because I believe you will ask questions when others remain silent.

Please protect both my children equally.

I couldn't continue.

My eyes filled.

Daniel reached for my hand.

"That sounds like Dad.""

I nodded.

"He trusted me.""

"More than he trusted the people closest to him.""

Rebecca allowed us a moment.

Then she continued.

"There's one more matter. Mr. Bennett found evidence that Patricia attempted to change the beneficiary arrangements after your father's death. The amendment was never properly executed.""

Daniel leaned forward.

"So Emily was never legally removed?""

"That is what the preliminary records suggest.""

He exhaled.

"Then Brooke had no right to take her inheritance.""

"Correct, if the original trust terms are confirmed.""

I looked at the bank statements.

"What happens to the money that was withdrawn?""

Rebecca folded her hands.

"That will depend on where the funds went and whether the transactions were authorized. We may need a forensic accounting review.""

Daniel stared at the figures.

"Four hundred thousand dollars.""

Rebecca nodded.

"Possibly more, depending on additional transactions.""

At lunchtime, we received a call from Mr. Bennett.

His voice was weak but clear.

"Daniel? This is Harold Bennett.""

Daniel immediately stood.

"Mr. Bennett. Thank you for calling.""

"I knew this day might come.""

Daniel looked at me.

"What do you remember about my father?""

There was a brief pause.

"Robert was a careful man. He was particularly concerned about his children. He wanted both of them protected.""

"Why didn't you contact me?""

"I tried, several times. Your mother told me you had instructed her to handle everything.""

Daniel closed his eyes.

"I never said that.""

"I know that now.""

Mr. Bennett explained that after Robert died, Patricia visited his office with Brooke.

They brought documents and requested that he release the trust funds.

He refused.

Patricia then insisted that Robert had changed his instructions shortly before his death.

But she couldn't produce a valid amendment.

"What happened afterward?"" Daniel asked.

"Your mother told me she would arrange everything directly with the bank.""

"And you let her?""

"I informed her that she had no authority to alter the beneficiary arrangements. After that, I received no further instructions.""

Daniel's voice tightened.

"Did you know Emily had been excluded?""

"Yes. I received several letters from her. I sent them to the address she provided for you, but they were returned.""

Daniel looked at me.

Brooke had intercepted the letters.

Or at least someone had.

Mr. Bennett continued.

"There's another reason I wanted to speak with you.""

Daniel sat down.

"What is it?""

"Your father deposited an additional amount into the trust shortly before his death. It was intended to cover future education and medical expenses for both children.""

"How much?""

"Approximately $180,000.""

Daniel stared at the desk.

"Where is it?""

"I don't know. The records show that it was transferred to a different account shortly after Robert died.""

Rebecca immediately wrote something down.

"Do you have the account details?""

"I do.""

"Please send them to me.""

Mr. Bennett agreed.

Before ending the call, he added:

"Daniel, your father also left a sealed letter specifically for you. I have kept it in my office all these years.""

Daniel's voice softened.

"What does it say?""

"I haven't opened it. It was marked to be delivered personally.""

"Can I collect it?""

"Of course.""

That afternoon, Daniel went to Mr. Bennett's office.

I stayed home with Maya.

When Daniel returned, he was carrying a white envelope.

His eyes were red.

"Did you read it?"" I asked.

He nodded.

"Twice.""

He handed it to me.

The letter was short.

My dear Daniel,

If you are reading this, I am no longer there to answer your questions.

I want you to understand something. I love your mother, but love does not mean giving someone permission to control the truth.

I have made arrangements for both you and Emily. Please never allow anyone to convince you that one child deserves less because of the circumstances of their birth.

There is something else you must know.

Brooke has been making financial decisions that concern me. She has asked your mother to help her access funds that were never intended for her.

I refused.

I hope she changes her ways. But if she doesn't, please remember that protecting your family sometimes means refusing to protect someone's secrets.

Your loving father,

Robert.

Daniel sat beside me.

"He knew.""

I placed the letter on the table.

"He suspected.""

Daniel shook his head.

"He knew Brooke was trying to take the money.""

Then he looked toward the living room.

Patricia was sitting there, watching television.

"She must have known about this letter.""

I nodded.

"Maybe that's why she wanted the envelope.""

He stood.

"Where's the notebook?""

I handed it to him.

He opened it and began turning pages.

Then he stopped at an entry we hadn't examined carefully.

It was dated five days before Patricia began accusing me of breaking things.

*Sunday — Brooke says the plan must happen quickly. Daniel has started asking questions about the trust. If he finds Emily, everything will collapse.*

Daniel looked at me.

"She knew Emily was trying to contact me.""

I nodded.

Then he turned the page.

A new entry had been written in different handwriting.

Not Patricia's.

The letters were sharper.

More hurried.

At the top was a date.

And beneath it:

*If Nia becomes trustee, the entire plan is finished.*

Daniel stared.

"Who wrote this?""

I examined the page.

There was a small signature in the corner.

B.C.

Brooke Carter.

My phone vibrated.

An incoming message from an unknown number.

I opened it.

It was a photograph of our front door.

Taken from outside.

Someone was standing on our porch.

The message read:

You should stop asking questions about the inheritance. Your daughter is watching you, Nia. Children shouldn't have to pay for their parents' mistakes.

I felt my blood run cold.

Daniel took the phone from me.

His expression turned furious.

He immediately called the police to report the threatening message and arrange for the incident to be documented.

Then he looked at me.

"We're changing the locks tonight.""

I nodded.

But before either of us could move, Maya appeared in the doorway.

She was holding a folded piece of paper.

"Mom?""

I knelt.

"What's wrong, sweetheart?""

She handed it to me.

"I found this in Grandma's room. It was underneath her pillow.""

I unfolded it.

It was a handwritten list.

Three names appeared at the top.

Patricia.

Brooke.

And Daniel.

Beside Daniel's name was a checkmark.

Beside Patricia's was another.

But beside Brooke's name, someone had written:

*If the inheritance investigation continues, make sure Daniel takes the blame.*

At the bottom was one final sentence.

*He signed the original document. We can prove he knew.*

I looked at Daniel.

His face went completely white.

Because suddenly, the question wasn't just whether his mother and sister had stolen the inheritance.

May you like

It was whether they had prepared evidence to make him look like the person responsible for everything.

And somewhere in the house, Patricia's bedroom door quietly opened.
