Chapter 6 - VANESSA SAID SHE NEVER TOUCHED THE JEWELRY, AS IF THAT MADE HER INNOCENT

Daniel’s sister Vanessa returned with attorney.

She said:

“I never stole a piece.”

Technically maybe.

Then emails.

She knew.

She helped.

She received $30k.

Then:

“I thought Mom owned some.”

“Which?”

“Not sure.”

“So when you wrote ‘if Claire realizes jewelry is missing,’ what did you think?”

Silence.

Then:

“Did you know ring was Claire’s mother’s?”

“Yes.”

There.

Then why?

Family debt.

Margaret was scared.

Richard said estate messy.

Vanessa convinced herself items might have been gifts to Margaret.

No document.

Then:

“Why tell her to lie?”

“Because I didn’t want fight.”

Again.

Peace as cover.

Then $30k.

She said reimbursement for helping with company crisis.

Source mattered.

She knew by then.

So restitution.

Potential receiving/concealing stolen-property/fraud conspiracy based proof.

She eventually took plea to financial/fraud-related offenses? Let's keep plausible: she accepted plea for conspiracy to conceal proceeds and false documentation; restitution/probation, maybe limited custody depending jurisdiction. Margaret/Richard heavier.

Then Vanessa apologized to me:

I treated your mother’s belongings as money that could solve a Carter problem.

Specific.

Then:

I told myself no one was using jewelry, so no one was being hurt.

There.

Objects carry memory.

Ownership still.

Then:

When Mom kept the ring, I knew it was because it was recognizable. I should have stopped everything then.

I did not forgive immediately.

Maybe later not relationship.

Then Margaret.

She insisted for months:

“I meant to repay.”

With what?

Future company profits.

Classic.

No consent.

Then she said:

“Your mother had more jewelry than she wore.”

Irrelevant.

Then:

“She was dead.”

That ended any sympathy I had.

I looked at her in victim-impact preparation.

“She was dead, so you thought her wishes stopped mattering?”

Margaret stared.

Then:

“Claire…”

“No.”

Then:

“You did not steal from dead woman. You stole from living people she chose.”

There.

Then:

May you like

“And you hit my son to keep doing it.”

That tied.
