Chapter 10: The Forgery That Started Everything

For several seconds, nobody moved.

I stared at the document in my hands.

My father's name appeared beneath the heading:

*IRREVOCABLE TRANSFER OF CONTROLLING INTEREST.*

The document supposedly transferred 51 percent of Carter Hospitality Group to Patricia Carter.

The date was eleven months before Daniel and I had met.

I looked at my father.

“Dad, what is this?””

He took the document from me.

His eyes moved slowly across the page.

Then he shook his head.

“I never signed this.””

Evelyn Brooks stood near the elevator, clutching her briefcase.

“I know.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Evelyn, you need to leave.””

She looked at him.

“No, Daniel. I've been quiet long enough.””

Patricia emerged from the boardroom.

“What is going on?””

Evelyn turned.

“Perhaps you should tell them.””

Patricia's face hardened.

“Tell them what?””

“That the original transfer was prepared in your office.””

The hallway fell silent.

My father looked directly at Evelyn.

“Explain.””

She opened her briefcase and removed another document.

“This is the original electronic filing record. The transfer was prepared using a corporate account registered to Patricia Carter's consulting company.””

Patricia laughed nervously.

“That's absurd. I have never had access to Robert's accounts.””

Evelyn placed the paper beside the forged transfer.

“The account used to submit the document was linked to your office computer.””

Patricia's expression changed.

“That proves nothing.””

“There's more.””

Evelyn removed a small USB drive.

“The original transaction instructions were saved in the system. I kept a backup because I became concerned about the way the documents were being handled.””

Daniel moved toward her.

“Give me that.””

My father stepped between them.

“Don't.””

Daniel stopped.

For the first time, I saw him hesitate in front of my father.

Evelyn continued.

“Patricia approached me eleven months before Claire met Daniel. She wanted to establish a financial structure that would give her control over the hospitality company if Robert became incapacitated.””

My father frowned.

“Why would she need that?””

Evelyn looked at Patricia.

“Because she believed the company was undervalued and wanted to sell its most profitable properties.””

Patricia shook her head.

“That's a complete fabrication.””

Evelyn opened another folder.

“I have the emails.””

She handed Margaret a printed conversation.

Margaret read it silently.

Then she looked at my father.

“This is serious.””

“What does it say?””

Margaret pointed to one paragraph.

“Patricia asked Evelyn to prepare a transfer document that would make it appear as though Robert had voluntarily assigned his voting interest.””

My father looked at Patricia.

“Why?””

Patricia's voice rose.

“Because you never listened to anyone! You built a business and treated everyone else like employees!””

My father remained calm.

“I built that business with Eleanor.””

“And then you kept everything!””

Patricia's face had turned red.

“You had hotels, properties, investments. My family struggled while you sat on millions.””

My father stared at her.

“Your family?””

Patricia looked toward Daniel.

“Our family.””

I felt a chill.

“You've been planning this since before I met Daniel?””

Patricia looked at me.

“Don't flatter yourself. You weren't important at the beginning.””

The words landed with deliberate cruelty.

Daniel turned toward her.

“Mom, stop.””

But Patricia continued.

“You were simply useful. Your father was successful, and you were his only daughter. Daniel needed a way into the business.””

I looked at my husband.

He didn't deny it.

My stomach twisted.

“Did you marry me because of my father?””

Daniel rubbed his forehead.

“Claire, it wasn't like that.””

“Then what was it like?””

He stepped closer.

“I loved you.””

“Did you?””

“Yes.””

“Then why did you use my name to guarantee a loan?””

He had no answer.

My father handed the document to Margaret.

“Preserve everything. Every email, every filing, every electronic record.””

Margaret nodded.

“Already arranging it.””

Patricia folded her arms.

“You cannot prove that I intended to steal anything.””

Evelyn looked at her.

“Then perhaps you can explain the payment I received.””

Patricia froze.

“What payment?””

Evelyn removed a bank statement.

“Forty thousand dollars. Transferred from an account controlled by your company. The description says consulting services.””

Patricia's mouth tightened.

“That was legitimate compensation.””

“For what?””

“Financial advice.””

Evelyn nodded.

“Then you won't mind if investigators review the records.””

Daniel suddenly stepped toward Evelyn.

“You're destroying everyone over a misunderstanding.””

Evelyn looked exhausted.

“No, Daniel. I spent three years telling myself I was protecting a family. I finally realized I was helping people deceive one.””

My father looked at her.

“Why did you wait?””

She lowered her eyes.

“Because Patricia threatened to blame me if anything went wrong. She had copies of every document I had ever processed. I was afraid I'd lose my professional license.””

Margaret intervened.

“If you cooperate fully, we can document your role accurately. But you must tell the truth.””

Evelyn nodded.

“I will.””

A security officer appeared at the end of the hallway.

“Mr. Carter, the board would like everyone to return to the meeting.””

My father looked at me.

“Are you ready?””

I nodded.

We returned to the boardroom.

The chairman was waiting.

Daniel and Patricia sat on opposite sides of the table.

Gregory remained standing beside the windows.

Margaret placed the forged transfer document in front of the chairman.

“We have evidence that the document purporting to transfer controlling shares from Robert Carter to Patricia Carter was not authorized by Mr. Carter.””

The chairman examined it.

“Can this be verified?””

“An independent forensic review will be required. But the filing records and communications already raise serious concerns.””

Patricia stood.

“I object to this entire proceeding.””

The chairman looked at her.

“On what grounds?””

“This company is being run like a private family club. Robert has been making decisions without consulting the people who helped build it.””

My father leaned forward.

“Patricia, you never built this company.””

She laughed bitterly.

“Your first hotel nearly failed. Who introduced you to the investors who saved it?””

My father went still.

Then he answered quietly.

“Eleanor did.””

Patricia looked away.

Margaret opened a final folder.

“Before this meeting continues, there is another matter.””

She distributed copies of a document.

It was a corporate resolution signed by my father three years earlier.

The document established a temporary protection clause requiring independent review of any transfer involving the founding family's voting shares.

The chairman read it.

Then he looked at Daniel.

“This resolution invalidates the voting schedule you submitted.””

Daniel pushed back his chair.

“No. It can't.””

My father stood.

“It can, because I signed it.””

For the first time, Daniel had no argument.

The chairman announced that the proposed restructuring would be suspended pending an independent investigation.

Patricia sat motionless.

Daniel looked at me.

His expression was no longer angry.

It was desperate.

“Claire, please. We need to talk.””

I looked at him.

“We've been talking for ten years.””

Then I walked out.

But as we reached the elevator, Margaret received another message.

She read it and stopped.

“What is it?”” my father asked.

Margaret looked at me.

“There's been a development with the private lender.””

“What development?””

“They've submitted a claim against the company for the entire $2.75 million loan.””

I frowned.

“But the loan was secured against my house.””

“Yes.””

“Then why are they claiming it against Dad's company?””

Margaret handed me her phone.

The claim contained a new document.

A document showing that Carter Hospitality Group had supposedly guaranteed the loan.

My father's signature appeared at the bottom.

He stared at it.

Then he whispered:

May you like

“I've never seen this document.””

And suddenly, the fraud was bigger than any of us had imagined.
