Chapter 6: The Recording Nobody Was Supposed to Hear
Vanessa wanted to meet at a coffee shop near the river.
I didn't want to go alone, so my father offered to drive me.
“Do you think she's telling the truth?”” I asked.
“I think we should listen before deciding.””
We arrived ten minutes early.
The coffee shop was almost empty. Rain streaked the windows, and a young barista was wiping down the counter.
Vanessa sat at a table in the far corner.
She looked nothing like the confident woman who had laughed at my father the night before.
Her hair was pulled into a loose ponytail. Her makeup was smudged beneath her eyes, and she kept twisting a paper napkin between her fingers.
When she saw us, she stood.
“Claire.””
“Vanessa.””
She glanced at my father.
“Mr. Carter.””
He nodded.
“Good morning.””
Vanessa sat down.
“I know you probably hate me.””
I didn't sit immediately.
“I don't know what I feel yet.””
She swallowed.
“That's fair.””
I finally took the chair opposite her.
“Why did you ask me here?””
Vanessa reached into her handbag and removed a thick brown envelope.
“Because I don't want to be responsible for what happens next.””
She pushed it toward me.
Inside were copies of several documents.
The first was a loan application.
The second was a company resolution.
The third was a printed email chain.
I recognized Daniel's name immediately.
The email was dated three months earlier.
*From: Daniel Carter*
*Subject: Personal Guarantee*
We need Claire's authorization completed before the lender releases the funds. Mom has agreed to handle the witness section. Make sure the final copy goes through the secondary email address.
I read it twice.
“Why do you have this?””
Vanessa looked down.
“Because Daniel sent it to me.””
“Why?””
“He wanted me to prepare the company records.””
My father leaned forward.
“Did you know Claire hadn't agreed to the guarantee?””
Vanessa nodded.
“I knew she hadn't read the complete documents.””
My stomach twisted.
“Did you know I hadn't signed them?””
Vanessa hesitated.
“I didn't know that part until later.””
I looked at her.
“What does that mean?””
She reached into her bag again and removed a small flash drive.
“There's a recording.””
My father frowned.
“What recording?””
“The night the papers were signed. Mom called me because she couldn't get the digital authorization to work. She asked me to come to the house.””
“Why did you record it?”” I asked.
Vanessa's eyes filled.
“I didn't intend to. I had my phone running because I was on a call with a client. I forgot to disconnect it.””
She pushed the flash drive toward us.
“I heard everything.””
My father took it.
“Have you listened to it?””
“Several times.””
“And what does it contain?””
Vanessa wiped her cheek.
“Daniel telling Mom that Claire would never find out.””
The words hit me like a slap.
My father remained still.
I felt my fingers go numb.
“Play it.””
Vanessa looked at me.
“Are you sure?””
“Yes.””
My father inserted the drive into his laptop.
A recording appeared.
The audio was slightly muffled, but the voices were clear.
Daniel spoke first.
“Did you finish the authorization?””
Patricia answered.
“Almost. The lender wants the guarantee completed tonight.””
“Claire is asleep.””
“Then use the documents she signed last Christmas.””
A pause.
Daniel sighed.
“Those are household forms.””
“It's the same signature.””
“Mom, this is a personal guarantee for almost three million dollars.””
“And you need the money.””
Another pause.
Then Patricia spoke again.
“Once the acquisition closes, we'll repay the loan. Nobody will lose anything.””
Daniel's voice dropped.
“What if Claire finds out?””
Patricia laughed.
“She won't. You know how she is. She signs whatever you put in front of her.””
I stopped breathing.
The recording continued.
Daniel asked, “What about Robert?””
Patricia's answer was immediate.
“Robert is the real problem. If the hospitality acquisition goes through, we'll have access to the information we need.””
“What if he refuses to cooperate?””
“Then the loan gives us leverage. His daughter is already tied to the company.””
I looked at my father.
His face had gone completely still.
Daniel spoke again.
“And the house?””
Patricia answered.
“If Claire becomes difficult, the house will remind her what's at stake.””
The recording continued for another minute.
Then came a sentence that made me grip the edge of the table.
Daniel said:
“Once we have Robert's company, we can sell the properties and settle everything. Claire won't have to know how it happened.””
The recording ended.
Nobody spoke.
Outside, a bus splashed through a puddle.
Inside, I felt as though the entire world had tilted.
My father closed the laptop.
“Vanessa, why didn't you come forward earlier?””
She covered her face.
“Because I'm in the company too.””
My father looked at her.
“What do you mean?””
She took a shaky breath.
“Daniel gave me shares in DC Family Holdings. He said I would receive a percentage once the loan was paid off.””
I stared at her.
“So you benefited from this?””
She nodded.
“I did.””
“Then why should I trust you?””
Vanessa started crying.
“You shouldn't. Not yet.””
She reached into the envelope and pulled out another document.
“This is the transfer agreement.””
My father examined it.
Vanessa continued.
“Daniel promised me a portion of the proceeds if I helped arrange the financing. But after the money arrived, he changed the agreement.””
“What did he do?”” I asked.
“He transferred most of the funds to another company.””
“Whose company?””
She hesitated.
“Patricia's.””
My father leaned back.
“How much?””
“About $1.8 million.””
I stared at her.
“Where did the rest go?””
Vanessa looked directly at me.
“Blackstone Capital.””
My father immediately stood.
“That's enough. We need to get this to Margaret.””
But Vanessa grabbed his sleeve.
“There's one more thing.””
He stopped.
“What?””
She pulled out a final sheet.
It was a company authorization dated six months earlier.
The heading read:
*CARTER HOSPITALITY GROUP — PROPOSED CHANGE OF CONTROL.*
My father's name appeared at the top.
Below it was a list of proposed executive appointments.
Daniel Carter was named chief executive officer.
Patricia Carter was named chairwoman.
Vanessa Carter was listed as chief financial officer.
And beneath those names was a line that made my stomach drop.
*Robert Carter — Founding Shareholder, to be removed upon completion of acquisition.*
I looked at my father.
He was reading the document silently.
“Dad?””
He folded the paper.
“They were planning to take control of my company.””
Vanessa nodded.
“Daniel told Mom the acquisition was practically guaranteed.””
My father looked at her.
“Who told him that?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“I don't know.””
Then she reached into her handbag and removed a final envelope.
“This came from Daniel's office yesterday. I was supposed to deliver it to the lender.””
My father opened it.
Inside was a printed email.
The sender was an address belonging to Blackstone Capital.
The subject line read:
*FINAL AUTHORIZATION — CARTER ACQUISITION.*
The message contained one sentence.
Proceed with the transfer as scheduled. Robert Carter must not be informed until the voting rights have been reassigned.
My father slowly lowered the paper.
Then he noticed the date.
It was tomorrow.
I stared at him.
“Dad, what happens tomorrow?””
He looked at me.
“There's a shareholder meeting scheduled for Carter Hospitality Group.””
“But you own the company.””
“I do.””
“Then they can't just take it.””
My father looked toward the rain-streaked window.
“Not unless someone has already arranged a vote using shares they were never supposed to control.””
Vanessa whispered something.
“What?”” I asked.
She looked terrified.
“Daniel has been telling everyone that he already has enough votes.””
My father turned sharply.
“From whom?””
Vanessa's voice trembled.
“From the minority shareholders.””
“That's impossible. I hold the controlling voting rights.””
She shook her head.
“Not anymore. At least, that's what Daniel believes.””
My father took out his phone and called Margaret.
“Margaret, I need you to check the shareholder registry immediately. Something has changed.””
He listened.
Then his expression hardened.
“What do you mean the transfer was filed?””
I felt my heart pounding.
My father turned toward me.
“Claire, someone submitted a document claiming that I transferred part of my voting rights.””
“To whom?””
He stared at the paper in his hand.
Then he answered.
“To Daniel.””
My phone vibrated.
A message from my husband appeared.
*Daniel: I hope you're enjoying your meeting with Vanessa. You should know that tomorrow, your father won't be the one making decisions anymore.*
A second message followed.
*And Claire, don't bother coming home. I've already changed the locks.*
I read it twice.
Then I looked at my father.
He didn't look angry.
He looked disappointed.
He placed his phone on the table and said quietly:
“Tomorrow, we're going to find out exactly how far your husband thought he could go.””
But before we could leave, Vanessa grabbed my hand.
“Claire, there's something else I haven't told you.””
I turned toward her.
“What?””
She looked at my father, then back at me.
“The voting-rights transfer wasn't signed by Daniel.””
Her voice broke.
“It was signed by your mother.””
May you like
I stopped breathing.
My mother had been dead for eleven years.
