Chapter 3 - THE NIGHT THOMAS CARTER DIED

Thomas Carter died three years earlier from a heart attack in his office.

That was family story.

He was sixty-eight.

Overworked.

High blood pressure.

No autopsy requested.

Patricia said it was natural.

Daniel accepted.

Rebecca accepted.

Everyone did.

Then Detective Cole reopened timeline.

Thomas collapsed at Carter Holdings headquarters at 10:40 p.m.

Patricia called ambulance.

Martin Vale, CFO at time, was supposedly not there.

But building records told different story.

His badge entered at 9:58.

Exited at 11:12.

The entry disappeared from official report.

Who controlled security logs?

Martin.

Daniel stared at screen.

“He was there when Dad died.”

Patricia said nothing.

Detective asked:

“Did Martin kill Thomas?”

Patricia snapped:

“No.”

Too quick.

Then:

“Then what happened?”

She refused.

Attorney stopped interview.

Police needed medical records.

Original death certificate:

Cardiac arrest.

No indication of foul play.

But that did not mean murder.

Could be unrelated cover-up.

Important.

Then Rebecca arrived.

Daniel’s older sister.

Forty-two.

She had received police call about loan in her name.

She stormed into mansion.

“Mom, what the hell?”

Patricia cried.

“I was trying to save everything your father built.”

Rebecca threw folder.

“You borrowed one point two million dollars using my identity!”

“I was going to repay it.”

“When?”

“When company recovered.”

“And if it didn’t?”

Silence.

Rebecca then looked at me.

Rain incident had already spread.

She said:

“I’m sorry she locked you out.”

I nodded.

Not enough, but not her crime.

Then Detective asked Rebecca about Thomas’s death.

She hesitated.

“I always thought something was weird.”

Daniel turned.

“What?”

The night before he died, Thomas called Rebecca.

He said:

“If anything happens, don’t let your mother sign anything for me.”

Rebecca assumed marital argument.

Then Thomas died.

After funeral, Patricia produced revised corporate power-of-attorney giving her temporary authority.

Was it real?

Now questionable.

Samuel? No, use family attorney, Charles Benton.

Attorney Charles Benton reviewed.

Signature looked valid.

But notarization belonged to notary who had died six months earlier.

Impossible.

Document forged after notary death using old stamp.

Now Patricia looked far worse.

She used Thomas’s death to seize company control.

Did she cause death?

Still no evidence.

Then Detective found hospital toxicology? No autopsy. Could exhume? High stakes. Maybe not needed.

Better: Thomas had wearable health device. Cloud data saved.

It showed severe arrhythmia beginning 10:31.

Then heart rate spikes.

Then collapse.

No indication cause.

But audio from office smart recorder? Maybe assistant voice device captured segment.

Thomas:

“Martin, I said no.”

Martin:

“You don’t have a choice.”

Then Patricia:

“Thomas, please.”

Thomas:

“You brought him here?”

Crash.

No more.

Daniel looked at mother.

“You were there before call?”

Patricia had claimed she arrived after collapse.

Lie.

She started crying.

“I was there.”

“What happened?”

Thomas discovered Martin had hidden company losses.

Nearly twenty million.

Martin used off-book financing.

Thomas planned to fire him and call auditors.

Patricia panicked.

Why?

Because Patricia had co-signed some transactions.

Without board approval.

If exposed, both faced fraud allegations.

She asked Martin to help fix before Thomas acted.

They confronted him.

Thomas became furious.

Then chest pain.

He reached for medication.

Patricia gave it.

Ambulance later.

Did they delay call?

Yes.

By nine minutes.

Why?

They were destroying financial documents.

Daniel stared.

“Nine minutes.”

Patricia sobbed.

“I thought medicine would work.”

“You spent nine minutes hiding papers while Dad was dying?”

“I was scared.”

Rebecca walked out.

I understood.

This was not premeditated murder.

But morally devastating.

Martin knew.

He used secret ever since.

Blackmail.

Patricia paid him through Bellweather.

Now fraudulent loans funded blackmail and company debt simultaneously.

The man exploiting family was former CFO.

Then Detective traced $900,000 from my loan.

Only $200,000 reached company.

$700,000 went offshore through Martin.

He had been bleeding Patricia too.

Patricia created crime to hide earlier crime.

Martin monetized fear.

Cycle.

Then police located Martin.

He had left home.

Passport active.

Flight booked next morning.

But before arrest, he emailed Daniel.

Subject:

YOUR MOTHER IS LYING ABOUT CLAIRE TOO

My skin went cold.

Attachment:

Photographs of Patricia inside my condo months before loan.

How did she enter?

My missing bank card.

Maybe key?

More photos.

One showed Daniel.

Standing beside her.

Date three months earlier.

My husband was in my condo with Patricia while I was away.

Daniel went white.

I looked at him.

“You said you didn’t know.”

“I didn’t know about loan.”

“Why were you there?”

He swallowed.

“Mom said she needed insurance documents.”

“You helped her enter my condo?”

Silence.

“Yes.”

That changed everything.

Maybe he did not know fraud.

But he helped Patricia access my private files.

Then I asked:

“Did you give her my documents?”

“No.”

“Did you leave her alone?”

He looked down.

“For ten minutes.”

There it was.

The opening she used.

I whispered:

“You let her into my home after I told you she went through my things.”

“I thought she was being ridiculous, not criminal.”

“That’s supposed to help?”

“No.”

Good.

At least no defense.

Then Martin’s email included final line:

Daniel knew enough to make Claire vulnerable. Ask him why he needed the $500,000.

May you like

The fraudulent account in Daniel’s name.

Maybe he did know something after all.
