Chapter 8 - PATRICIA’S LAST SECRET ACCOUNT

Three years later, restitution team discovered dormant account.
Switzerland? Avoid cliché. Domestic trust account under foundation.
Balance:
$3.4 million.
Opened by Patricia fifteen years earlier.
Beneficiary:
Daniel.
He stared.
“I didn’t know.”
Funds came from company bonuses, some legitimate, some improperly diverted.
Patricia had built secret safety net for him.
Why only Daniel?
Not Rebecca.
Because Daniel was heir in her mind.
Another control method.
Money as leash.
Daniel could claim legitimate portion but chose independent legal review.
Some returned company.
Some taxes.
Remaining lawful gift could be his.
He donated part to employee pension restoration and kept part.
Good.
Not performative total rejection.
Then Patricia wrote:
That account was supposed to protect you if company failed.
Daniel answered:
Protection someone doesn’t know about can still become control if you use it to make choices for them.
Growth.
Then Patricia release years later.
She requested meeting.
Daniel agreed.
Rebecca.
Me eventually.
Public café.
She looked older.
No diamonds.
“Claire.”
“Patricia.”
She did not ask hug.
Good.
“I’m sorry I locked you outside.”
“I know.”
“I’m sorry about loan.”
“I know.”
“I’m sorry I believed your credit belonged to family because you married Daniel.”
That was specific.
“I’m sorry I trained my son to fear disagreeing with me.”
Daniel looked down.
Then:
“I’m sorry I spent nine minutes protecting myself while Thomas was dying.”
Silence.
That was hardest.
No one absolved.
She cried.
“I can’t fix that.”
Daniel answered:
“No.”
Not cruel.
Truth.
Then she asked me:
“Do you forgive me?”
I thought.
“Some things.”
She nodded.
“Not all?”
“No.”
“Fair.”
Then:
“Can we have relationship?”
“Limited.”
Terms.
No finances.
No unannounced visits.
No criticism disguised as help.
No private access to documents.
No requests through Daniel if I say no directly.
She almost smiled.
“Very detailed.”
“I learned.”
She nodded.
Accepted.
That was proof.
Months later she visited condo.
Asked before pouring own wine.
I laughed.
She got joke.
Progress.
Then she told story from her childhood.
Not excuse.
Her mother lost house after father debt.
Patricia became obsessed with never losing home.
Carter mansion symbol.
When Thomas’s company struggled, panic activated.
She believed any means justified preserving house/company.
Then locked me outside of the home she was committing crimes to save.
Irony.
She said:
“I was so afraid of being outside that I put you outside.”
That was strong.
I answered:
“And then expected everyone to call it gratitude.”
“Yes.”
No more.
Then Martin remained incarcerated longer.
He sent Patricia letters blaming.
May you like
She stopped responding.
Cycle broken partly.
