Chapter 13 - MY FATHER CAME TO DINNER IN WORK BOOTSThe first real test of Patricia’s change came eight months later.

My parents visited.

My father, Frank, wore polished work boots because he hated dress shoes.

Patricia once mocked those boots.

This time, she opened the door.

She looked at them.

Then at him.

“Frank.”

“Patricia.”

Awkward.

My mother almost smiled.

At dinner, Dad told a story about rebuilding an engine when I was ten.

Patricia listened.

Really listened.

Then asked:

“Is that why Anna likes mechanical problems?”

Dad laughed.

“She likes solving what other people break.”

Ethan looked at me.

“Accurate.”

Patricia smiled.

No rescue narrative.

No class jokes.

No “your daughter did well for herself.”

Just conversation.

Small.

Ordinary.

Healing often looks unimpressive from across the room.

Up close, it is enormous.
