Chapter 3 - THOMAS VALE DID NOT WANT HIS SON, HE WANTED LEVERAGE

Police located Thomas within twenty-four hours.
He did not run far.
A casino hotel.
Of course.
He came with lawyer.
Denied blackmail.
Called payments “settlements.”
Then messages.
Thomas to Evelyn:
If Daniel learns Robert never adopted him, he’ll ask why.
Evelyn:
Stay away from him.
Thomas:
Then pay what you promised.
Then:
Old Carter trust attorneys will love knowing their ‘descendant’ isn’t one.
There.
Extortion-like.
Then he said:
“I’m his father.”
But had he ever tried to see Daniel?
No.
Birthday cards?
No.
Support?
Minimal.
Then suddenly when Robert became wealthy?
Contact.
He resurfaced when Daniel was eleven.
Asked Evelyn for money.
Robert confronted.
Thomas left.
Again when Daniel twenty-one.
Then after Robert death, more.
This was not father seeking son.
It was leverage.
Then one message changed.
Thomas:
I don’t care about meeting him. I care about what you owe me for signing away trouble all those years.
There.
Then legal.
He had once signed documents agreeing not to challenge Robert’s parental role in exchange for settlement.
Was that enforceable? Some aspects not if child rights involved.
But it showed.
Then Daniel asked police later:
“Can I talk to him?”
Attorney advised maybe.
Eventually, controlled.
Daniel sat across.
Thomas looked at him.
“You have my eyes.”
Daniel replied:
“I have Robert’s name.”
Good.
Then:
“Did you ever want me?”
Thomas paused.
“No.”
Brutal.
Then:
“Then why are you here?”
“Money.”
At least honest.
Then:
“Did Mom owe you?”
Thomas smiled.
“She thought so.”
“What did she owe?”
“Silence.”
Then:
“About what?”
“That she lied.”
Then:
“And you helped.”
Thomas shrugged.
“People pay for peace.”
There.
Again.
Then Daniel asked:
“Do you think being biological father gives you right to my life now?”
“No.”
Good.
Then:
“Money?”
“That’s different.”
No.
It wasn’t.
Then meeting ended.
May you like
Daniel did not search for emotional closure from man who had none.
Good.
