Chapter 8 - CONSEQUENCES WERE BORING, WHICH WAS GOOD

Court cases took time.
No instant prison parade.
Evelyn pleaded to theft/assault and financial-fraud-related counts.
Restitution.
Probation plus short custodial/home-confinement component appropriate to record and age.
Removed permanently from Carter Family Services authority.
Thomas pleaded/was convicted on extortion-related conduct and receiving stolen property, plus financial offenses.
Restitution.
No parental rights drama because Daniel adult.
The wedding cash recovered partly.
Checks reissued.
Guests eventually joked.
I did not.
Then family office audit.
No wider massive theft.
Good.
About $430k misclassified over years.
Corrected.
Evelyn repaid/disgorged from her assets.
Company survived.
Then Daniel separated family office governance.
Independent CFO.
No relatives approve personal “consulting.”
Then our marriage.
We stayed.
Because Daniel changed behavior.
Not because I forgot slap.
He stopped saying:
“She’s my mom.”
As if that answered boundary.
Instead:
“She’s my mom, and this is still not acceptable.”
Difference.
Then at first anniversary, no giant party.
Dinner.
I asked:
“Do you regret wedding?”
He said:
“I regret what happened. Not marrying you.”
I believed.
Then he asked:
“Do you?”
I said:
May you like
“I regret not making boundaries before.”
Both learned.
