Chapter 7: The Truth Hidden in My Father’s Archive

Veronica Caldwell stood at the end of the hallway like she had never left.

No panic.

No fear.

No sign of the woman who had been taken away by police hours earlier.

She looked calm.

Almost amused.

And in her hand was the one thing everyone had been searching for.

My father’s archive.

Preston stared at her.

“Mom…”

Veronica smiled.

That smile terrified me more than her anger.

Because anger was unpredictable.

Confidence meant she believed she had already won.

“You all look so surprised,” she said.

Richard stepped forward.

“How did you get out?””

Veronica glanced at him.

“You still think rules apply to people like us?””

The words hung in the hallway.

People like us.

I felt sick.

Because that was the world Veronica lived in.

A world where money erased consequences.

Where power turned truth into something negotiable.

“Give me the archive,” Richard said.

Veronica laughed.

“You always were the loyal servant.””

Richard’s face tightened.

“I was your friend.””

“No.””

Her smile faded.

“You were my husband’s friend.””

The room went silent.

I looked at Richard.

“Your husband?””

He didn’t answer.

Veronica noticed.

And she enjoyed it.

“Oh, Claire.””

She walked closer.

“You really don’t know anything, do you?””

Preston moved between us.

“Stop.””

Veronica looked at him.

Her expression changed.

Not softer.

Disappointed.

“You.””

One word.

But it carried years of anger.

“I gave you everything.””

Preston’s jaw tightened.

“You manipulated me.””

“I protected you.””

“You lied to me.””

“I saved this family.””

He shook his head.

“No. You destroyed it.””

For a moment, Veronica looked genuinely hurt.

Then she laughed.

A cold, empty sound.

“That’s what she taught you?””

She pointed at me.

“That loyalty means abandoning your own blood?””

I stepped forward.

“Don’t use family as an excuse for what you did.””

Veronica looked at me.

“You still don’t understand.””

“No.””

I held her gaze.

“I understand perfectly.””

I pointed at the archive.

“You stole from my father.””

“I borrowed.””

“You tried to attack me.””

“You provoked me.””

“You used Preston.””

Her expression hardened.

“And you took him from me.””

The sentence stunned me.

Not because it made sense.

Because it revealed something.

This was never only about money.

It was about control.

Veronica didn’t see Preston as her son.

She saw him as something she owned.

Something that belonged to her.

“You don’t love him,” I said quietly.

Her eyes narrowed.

“You have no idea what love is.””

“No.””

I looked at Preston.

“I know exactly what love is.””

Then back at her.

“And it doesn’t look like this.””

Veronica walked into the library.

Everyone followed.

Not because we trusted her.

Because the archive was the center of everything.

She placed the folder on the table.

“You want answers?””

She opened it.

“Fine.””

Inside were documents.

Pages of notes.

Photographs.

Financial records.

But one document caught my attention immediately.

A letter.

My father’s handwriting.

My heart stopped.

“Where did you get that?””

Veronica looked at me.

“From the place your father thought nobody would find.””

I reached toward it.

She pulled it away.

“Not yet.””

My hands curled into fists.

“You don’t get to control this anymore.””

She smiled.

“Actually, Claire, I do.””

I stared at her.

“Why?””

“Because your father made one mistake.””

“What?””

“He trusted people.””

The irony almost made me laugh.

Coming from her.

“You mean like you?””

Her expression didn’t change.

“You think I’m the villain because that’s the easiest explanation.””

“Are you saying you didn’t steal the money?””

“I’m saying you don’t know the whole story.””

Richard stepped closer.

“Then tell it.””

Veronica looked at him.

“You first.””

Richard went still.

“What?””

“You want Claire to know everything?””

She smiled.

“Then tell her what happened the night her father died.””

My breath caught.

I looked at Richard.

“What happened?””

He looked away.

That was enough.

“Richard.””

He closed his eyes.

“I went to see your father.””

“I know.””

“You don’t know why.””

“Then tell me.””

He was silent for a long moment.

Finally:

“Your father called me because he discovered who was behind the missing funds.””

I looked at Veronica.

She didn’t react.

“That person wasn’t Veronica?””

Richard shook his head.

“No.””

The room went quiet.

“Then who?””

Richard looked at me.

“I never found out.””

Veronica laughed.

“Because you were too late.””

Richard’s face darkened.

“You know.””

“Yes.””

“Tell her.””

Veronica looked at me.

“You want the truth?””

I nodded.

“Your father wasn’t investigating my family.””

She touched the archive.

“He was investigating his own.””

My stomach dropped.

“What?””

She pulled out a document.

“Your father’s foundation was built on a partnership.””

I looked at the paper.

A list of names.

Some familiar.

Some not.

“And?””

“And one of those partners betrayed him.””

“Who?””

Veronica slid the paper across the table.

My eyes moved down the page.

Then stopped.

A name.

A name I knew.

A name I never expected.

My breath disappeared.

“No.””

Preston looked over my shoulder.

“What is it?””

I couldn’t speak.

Because the name belonged to someone who had been part of my life since childhood.

Someone my father trusted.

Someone I trusted.

Someone who had comforted me after my father died.

Richard whispered:

“Oh my God.””

I looked at him.

“You knew?””

He shook his head quickly.

“No.””

But his reaction told me everything.

He recognized the name.

“Who is it?”” Preston asked.

I slowly lifted my eyes.

“Daniel.””

The room froze.

My attorney.

The man who had helped manage my father’s estate.

The man who had guided me through every legal step.

The man who had been telling me where to look.

The man who had warned me about everyone else.

“No,” Preston said quietly.

I looked at the documents again.

The signature.

The transfers.

The authorization.

Everything connected.

But something still bothered me.

Daniel had been the one who found the missing funds.

He had been the one who exposed Veronica.

Why would he reveal his own crime?

Unless…

Unless he wasn’t revealing it.

Unless he was controlling what I saw.

Veronica watched realization spread across my face.

“Now you understand.””

I looked at her.

“You knew.””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I needed you to find out yourself.””

I laughed bitterly.

“You expect me to believe you were helping me?””

“No.””

Her answer surprised me.

“I expect you to understand that everyone around you has been using you.””

The room went silent.

Even Preston looked shaken.

Veronica continued.

“Your father didn’t leave the foundation to you because he trusted you.””

I stared.

“He left it to you because you were the only person nobody suspected.””

My heart tightened.

“That’s not true.””

“Isn’t it?””

She stepped closer.

“Your father knew people would come after the foundation. He knew they would look at every executive, every board member, every person with power.””

She tapped the archive.

“But nobody would look at his daughter.””

I felt dizzy.

Because some part of me feared she was right.

My father had protected me.

But maybe he had also hidden me.

Used my innocence as a shield.

Then Veronica said the one thing that made everyone freeze.

“Claire, there is one document your father never wanted you to see.””

“What document?””

Her smile disappeared.

“The one that explains why he really chose you.””

My phone rang.

Everyone looked at it.

Daniel.

Again.

I answered.

“Claire.””

His voice was urgent.

“Do not listen to Veronica.””

I looked at the woman standing across from me.

“She has my father’s archive.””

Silence.

Then Daniel said:

“That means she found it.””

My blood ran cold.

“What does that mean?””

A pause.

Then:

“Claire, your father created the archive to expose one person.””

I looked at Veronica.

Then Richard.

Then Preston.

“Who?””

Daniel’s voice became almost a whisper.

“The person who caused his death.””

Nobody moved.

The entire room seemed to stop breathing.

Then Daniel said:

“And Claire…”

My grip tightened around the phone.

“What?””

“You need to leave immediately.””

“Why?””

“Because that person is not outside the estate.””

I looked around the room.

At Veronica.

At Preston.

At Richard.

May you like

Then Daniel finished:

“They’re standing in the same room as you.””
