Chapter 8: The Person Who Killed My Father’s Trust
“They’re standing in the same room as you.””
Daniel’s words were still echoing through the phone.
I looked around the library.
The room suddenly felt smaller.
Every person inside it became a question.
Veronica.
Richard.
Preston.
Three people connected to my father.
Three people who had hidden pieces of the truth.
And one of them was responsible for his death.
“Daniel,” I whispered, “say it again.””
“Claire, listen carefully.””
His voice was urgent.
“You cannot trust anyone in that room.””
My eyes moved toward the others.
Veronica was watching me.
Richard looked nervous.
Preston looked terrified.
“Why?””
“Because the archive wasn’t just evidence.””
I frowned.
“What do you mean?””
“Your father created a trap.””
The words made my heart race.
“A trap?””
“Yes.””
Daniel continued.
“The archive was designed to reveal anyone who tried to access it without permission.””
I looked at the folder in Veronica’s hand.
“What happens when someone opens it?””
A pause.
Then Daniel said:
“It sends a signal.””
My stomach dropped.
“To whom?””
“To me.””
The room went silent.
I stared at the phone.
“You knew?””
“I knew someone would eventually try.””
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because I needed to know who would come looking for it.””
I felt anger rising.
“So you used me too?””
“Claire—”
“No.””
My voice shook.
“You all keep saying you’re protecting me.””
I looked around the room.
“But everyone keeps making decisions for me.””
Nobody spoke.
Because it was true.
My father.
Daniel.
Preston.
Veronica.
Everyone had decided what I could handle.
Everyone had decided what I deserved to know.
And I was tired of being the last person in my own life to hear the truth.
“Daniel,” I said.
“Yes?””
“If you knew someone would come for the archive…”
I looked at Veronica.
“Why did you let it happen?””
Silence.
Then:
“Because I didn’t know who it would be.””
The answer chilled me.
“You were watching.””
“Yes.””
“And you let someone break into my father’s office.””
“I needed proof.””
My hands tightened.
“Proof?””
“Claire, your father’s death was never investigated properly.””
The room went still.
“What?””
Daniel’s voice lowered.
“The official report was incomplete.””
I felt my heartbeat pounding.
“My father died from a heart attack.””
“That’s what everyone believed.””
The words hit me.
Believed.
Not knew.
“Daniel…”
“I’m sorry.””
I looked at Preston.
He looked just as shocked.
Even Veronica’s expression changed.
For the first time, she looked genuinely surprised.
“You knew?”” she asked.
I turned toward her.
“You didn’t?””
She stared at me.
“No.””
The room shifted.
Because if Veronica was telling the truth, then she wasn’t the person Daniel was warning me about.
Richard stepped back.
“What exactly did your father discover?””
Daniel answered.
“Someone inside the foundation had been manipulating records for years.””
Richard looked pale.
“Years?””
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because your name appeared in some of the documents.””
Richard’s face changed.
“What?””
I watched him carefully.
Daniel continued.
“Richard Whitmore had access to financial reports, but there was no evidence proving he was involved.””
Richard looked furious.
“You suspected me?””
“I suspected everyone.””
That answer sounded exactly like my father.
Careful.
Precise.
Always preparing for betrayal.
Then Preston spoke.
“Daniel.””
His voice was quiet.
“What about me?””
A pause.
Then Daniel said:
“Your name appeared too.””
Preston closed his eyes.
I watched him.
A painful thought entered my mind.
Maybe he wasn’t the villain.
Maybe he was just another person caught inside something much bigger.
But then I remembered his hands around my wrists.
And I remembered that even frightened people make choices.
“What about Veronica?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
That silence said enough.
Veronica laughed.
“So now I’m the obvious suspect.””
Nobody responded.
She looked at me.
“Claire, you see it now, don’t you?””
“See what?””
“That everyone has a reason to point at me.””
She stepped closer.
“But nobody is asking the important question.””
I frowned.
“What question?””
“Who benefits from us fighting each other?””
The room became quiet.
Because that was exactly what had happened.
Everyone had been looking at Veronica.
At Preston.
At Richard.
But someone else had been moving pieces.
Someone who wanted us distracted.
My phone suddenly buzzed.
A message.
From Daniel.
I opened it.
One sentence.
*Do not tell anyone what I am about to send you.*
Then another message appeared.
A photograph.
I opened it.
And my blood turned cold.
It was a picture of my father.
Taken the night before he died.
He was sitting in his office.
Talking to someone.
I zoomed in.
My hands started shaking.
Because the person sitting across from him was not Veronica.
Not Richard.
Not Preston.
It was Daniel.
But the date on the photograph made no sense.
Daniel had told me he wasn’t there.
He had told me my father called him.
He had told me he arrived after everything happened.
But the picture showed something different.
He was already there.
“Claire?””
Preston’s voice broke through.
I locked my phone.
Too late.
He had seen my face.
“What happened?””
I looked at Daniel’s name on my screen.
Then at the people in the room.
“I need to ask everyone a question.””
Nobody moved.
“Who was with my father the night he died?””
Silence.
Richard looked away.
Veronica’s expression hardened.
Preston looked confused.
And then Richard slowly said:
“I wasn’t.””
Veronica said:
“I left before midnight.””
Preston shook his head.
“I wasn’t there.””
Everyone denied it.
Except one person.
Daniel.
Because Daniel wasn’t in the room.
And Daniel was the only one who had claimed to know what happened.
My phone rang.
His name appeared.
I answered.
“Claire.””
I didn’t speak.
“Did you receive the photo?””
My blood ran cold.
“You sent it?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because it’s time you know the truth.””
I looked at the others.
“You were there.””
A long silence.
Then Daniel said:
“Yes.””
The room froze.
“You lied to me.””
“I protected you.””
“No.””
My voice broke.
“You lied.””
He sighed.
“I was trying to keep you alive.””
The words were terrifying.
“Who was with my father?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
“Daniel.””
Finally, he said:
“Someone who wanted your father to disappear.””
My heart pounded.
“Who?””
A pause.
Then:
“Claire, listen to me.””
“No.””
“Please.””
“I want the name.””
Silence.
Then Daniel whispered:
“Your mother.””
I stopped breathing.
The world went completely silent.
My mother.
A woman who had died when I was young.
A woman my father never spoke badly about.
A woman I barely remembered except through old photographs.
“That’s impossible.””
“I know what you believe.””
“You’re lying.””
“I wish I was.””
I looked at the others.
Nobody spoke.
Even Veronica looked stunned.
“My mother has been dead for twenty years.””
Daniel’s voice softened.
“Claire…”
The next words shattered everything I thought I knew.
“Your mother didn’t die twenty years ago.””
My fingers went numb.
“What?””
“She disappeared.””
I couldn’t move.
“Daniel…”
“She changed her identity.””
My heart raced.
“Why?””
Another pause.
Then:
“Because she was the person your father was trying to protect you from.””
The call ended.
And for the first time since this nightmare began, I wasn’t looking at the people who betrayed me.
I was looking at a ghost.
A person I thought I lost long ago.
A person who might have been hiding in the shadows my entire life.
Then the library door slowly opened.
Everyone turned.
A woman stood there.
Older.
Different.
But somehow familiar.
Her eyes locked onto mine.
And I knew immediately.
Because some memories don’t live in your mind.
They live somewhere deeper.
She whispered:
“Claire.””
My knees almost gave out.
The woman touched her face.
Tears filled her eyes.
“I’m sorry it took me this long to come back.””
May you like
My voice barely came out.
“Mom?””
