Chapter 14: The Man Who Came Back for His Daughters

The number on Vivian's note belonged to a private clinic in Houston.

Detective Harris traced it to an administrator named Dr. Philip Lawson.

According to the clinic's records, a patient named Gabriel Reed had been admitted under a different surname eleven years earlier.

He had received treatment for a serious neurological condition.

The official death certificate was still on file.

But the clinic had recorded several payments to his account during the previous six months.

My mother stared at the records.

"He's alive.""

Detective Harris remained cautious.

"We don't know that yet.""

"Then find out.""

The detective made a call.

Within twenty minutes, he had an address.

A private rehabilitation residence outside Houston.

I looked at my mother.

"Do you want to go?""

She nodded.

"I need to know whether he's alive.""

I glanced toward Sophie.

She was sitting with Catherine, drawing another picture.

"Should we bring her?""

My mother shook her head.

"Not yet. She has been through enough.""

I agreed.

We left Sophie with Catherine and two officers.

Then we drove toward Houston.

The rehabilitation residence was surrounded by trees and a high stone wall.

A nurse met us at the entrance.

"Are you here to see Gabriel?""

My mother nodded.

The nurse studied her face.

Then she smiled sadly.

"He has been waiting for you.""

My mother gripped my hand.

"Waiting?""

"He asks about a woman named Elena every week.""

We followed her down a quiet hallway.

At the end was a room with large windows overlooking a garden.

An older man sat in a wheelchair beside the window.

His hair was almost completely gray.

His face was thinner than the one in the photograph.

But his eyes were the same.

My mother stopped.

"Gabriel?""

The man slowly turned.

For several seconds, he simply stared at her.

Then his eyes filled with tears.

"Elena.""

My mother covered her mouth.

He tried to stand, but the nurse gently stopped him.

She moved toward him.

I stayed near the doorway.

I felt as though I were witnessing a moment that belonged to another life.

Gabriel reached for her hand.

"I thought you were dead.""

My mother laughed through her tears.

"So did I.""

He kissed her fingers.

Then he looked at me.

His expression changed.

"Lena.""

I swallowed.

"You know who I am?""

He nodded.

"I've seen your photographs.""

My mother looked at him.

"How?""

Gabriel lowered his eyes.

"Your grandfather sent them.""

I stepped closer.

"Why didn't you contact me?""

He looked exhausted.

"Because I wasn't allowed.""

"By whom?""

"Your grandfather.""

My mother sat beside him.

"Gabriel, tell us everything.""

He took a breath.

"After you married Marco, your father discovered that I was still in love with you. He was furious. He believed I would interfere with the business arrangement.""

My mother looked down.

"He told me you had left the country.""

Gabriel nodded.

"He arranged for me to be treated at a private facility after my accident. I was told you had married and started a family.""

"Your accident?""

He looked at me.

"Your grandfather's driver caused it.""

I felt cold.

"What?""

Gabriel continued.

"One night, I was driving home when a truck struck my vehicle. I survived, but I suffered a brain injury. When I woke up, I couldn't remember several years of my life.""

My mother held his hand.

"Why didn't you come looking for us?""

"I tried.""

He looked toward the window.

"But your grandfather had people monitoring my treatment. He told me that if I contacted you, he would make sure you lost Lena.""

I felt anger rising.

"He threatened you with me?""

Gabriel nodded.

"He said you were happy with Marco. He said I had no right to disturb your life.""

My mother began crying.

"And Sophie?""

Gabriel closed his eyes.

"I didn't know about Sophie until recently.""

"How?""

"A nurse contacted me after Daniel was arrested. She sent me copies of the birth records.""

He reached toward a drawer.

Inside was a photograph of Sophie as a newborn.

My mother pressed it against her chest.

Gabriel looked at me.

"I wanted to meet you both.""

I stared at him.

"Why didn't you come sooner?""

He didn't defend himself.

He simply said, "I was afraid.""

I looked at his hands.

They trembled slightly.

For years, I had imagined that discovering my biological father would feel like finding a missing piece of myself.

Instead, I felt nothing familiar.

He was a stranger.

A stranger with my eyes.

A stranger who had missed every birthday, every school performance, and every difficult night.

But he had not chosen to abandon me.

At least, that was what he claimed.

I needed proof.

"Do you have anything that connects you to the accident?""

Gabriel nodded.

He reached into the drawer again and removed a small envelope.

Inside were photographs of my grandfather meeting Samuel.

There were bank statements.

And there was a letter.

The letter was dated three days before the accident.

It was addressed to Samuel.

The child must never know the truth about her father. Marco will raise her. Elena will remain silent. Daniel will handle the remaining arrangements.

At the bottom was my grandfather's signature.

My mother looked horrified.

"Your father wrote this?""

Gabriel nodded.

"He believed he could control everyone.""

I examined the envelope.

There was another photograph inside.

It showed my grandfather standing beside a young woman holding a baby.

The woman was Vivian.

The baby was Sophie.

But the date was impossible.

Sophie had supposedly been born six years earlier.

This photograph was dated two months before the accident.

I looked at Gabriel.

"Who is that baby?""

He took the photograph.

Then he shook his head.

"I don't know.""

My mother examined the woman's face.

"That's Vivian.""

I turned the picture over.

A handwritten note appeared.

*The first child. The first payment.*

My stomach tightened.

"Mom, what does this mean?""

Gabriel looked at the photograph for a long time.

Then he whispered:

"Vivian had a child before she married Daniel.""

My mother frowned.

"Daniel never mentioned that.""

Gabriel shook his head.

"Because Daniel wasn't the father.""

I stared at him.

"Who was?""

He looked directly at me.

"Samuel Reed.""

My blood ran cold.

The doctor who had tried to destroy my mother had fathered Vivian's first child.

But that wasn't the worst part.

Gabriel pointed to the baby.

"That child was born before you.""

My mother slowly lowered the photograph.

"Then where is the child now?""

Gabriel reached into the envelope and removed a second page.

It was an old adoption record.

The child's name was listed as Sophie Reed.

I felt my heart stop.

"No.""

My mother grabbed the paper.

The birth date matched.

The hospital number matched.

But the name was different.

This wasn't the Sophie we had just found.

It was another child.

Another girl.

Another secret.

And according to the document, she had been legally adopted by a family in England.

My mother looked at me.

"How many children did these people hide?""

Gabriel closed his eyes.

"More than you know.""

We left the clinic with copies of the documents.

Detective Harris arranged for a formal investigation into the second adoption.

But before we reached the car, my phone rang.

It was Vivian.

I answered.

"Where are you?""

She laughed softly.

"Still asking questions, Lena?""

"Where is the other Sophie?""

A pause.

Then she said:

"So you found Gabriel.""

I looked at my mother.

"Yes.""

Vivian sighed.

"Your grandfather always underestimated how much trouble one curious girl could cause.""

"Why did you hide another child?""

"Because the first arrangement worked.""

"What arrangement?""

She laughed again.

"Ask your father.""

"Which one?""

Her voice became colder.

"Marco.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

"What does Marco have to do with this?""

Vivian whispered:

"He didn't just raise you, Lena. He paid for you.""

The call ended.

I stared at the phone.

My mother took my hand.

"What did she say?""

I told her.

Gabriel looked devastated.

Then he whispered:

"Your grandfather's first arrangement wasn't about the company.""

He looked at me.

"It was about securing an heir.""

I frowned.

"What does that mean?""

Gabriel took a long breath.

"Your grandfather wanted a child who could inherit the business without carrying my name. He arranged your adoption before you were born.""

I shook my head.

"I wasn't adopted.""

He nodded.

"Not legally. But the arrangement was made before your birth.""

My mother covered her mouth.

Gabriel continued.

"Marco knew you were my daughter. He agreed to marry Elena and raise you as his own because your grandfather promised him control of the company.""

I felt something inside me break.

All those years.

All those birthdays.

All those times Marco told me I was his greatest achievement.

Had he loved me?

Or had he simply fulfilled a contract?

My phone buzzed.

A message from an unknown number.

*Come to the old family estate tonight. Bring Elena. There is one final document you need to see.*

A second message appeared.

*If you want to know why Marco really raised you, come alone.*

I looked at my mother.

She shook her head.

"Don't go.""

But Gabriel had already recognized the number.

His face turned pale.

"That's your grandfather's old private line.""

I stared at the screen.

My grandfather had been dead for years.

May you like

Yet someone was still using his number.

And they knew exactly where we were.
